Birefringence-Modulated Polarization Spectroscopy

Shigeru Nakayama, P. E. G. Baird

Abstract

The aim of this work was to develop a high-resolution, ultra-sensitive laser method that makes use of a Faraday modulator in a polarization spectroscopy arrangement. Though saturation spectroscopy is not a sensitive technique, polarization spectroscopy is a useful technique for obtaining both high resolution and high sensitivity. However, spectral line shapes are distorted. Our proposed birefringence-modulated polarization spectroscopy has additional advantages in sensitivity and symmetry of the line shape over saturation and polarization spectroscopy. The spectra of the sodium D1 line have been calculated in order to compare the various spectroscopic techniques.

Frequency-modulation-polarization spectroscopy

M. Romagnoli, M. D. Levenson, Gary C. Bjorklund

We have combined frequency-modulation and polarization spectroscopy to detect anisotropic spectral features with high sensitivity. The many line shapes possible with this technique and the potential for laser noise suppression were demonstrated by using saturation holes in iodine vapor.

Polarization-modulated optical pumping spectroscopy of Na D1 and D2 lines

Jom Sool Kim, Hong Jin Kong, Sang Soo Lee +1 more

Doppler-free spectra of linear and circular dichroisms for the hyperfine structures of Na ${D}_{1}$ and ${D}_{2}$ lines have been obtained by means of polarization-modulated optical pumping spectroscopy. The experimental results are compared with recent theoretical calculations based on velocity-selective optical pumping in a four-level atomic system.

Low Vapor Density Measurements by Saturated Absorption

Michael S. Raab, James J. Snyder

We report an application of two saturated absorption techniques, saturation spectroscopy and polarization spectroscopy to low density measurements in sodium vapor. The sensitivity we achieved using the resonance lines D1 and D2, was enough to detect a minimum number of a few thousand atoms. We discuss principal limits of such experiments and the benefits of both of the techniques.

Polarization spectroscopy within the natural width

Wojciech Gawlik

A method is suggested for obtaining narrow resonances within the natural width of the D1 line of sodium when the Zeeman degeneracy is lifted in the electric fields of two counterpropagating (antiparallel) differently polarized light beams.

New type of high-resolution spectroscopy with a diode laser

T. Yabuzaki, T. Mitsui, U. Tanaka

A phenomenon observed in a simple experiment with a diode laser is found to be a basis for powerful spectroscopy. In this spectroscopy, the laser frequency is neither scanned nor modulated. High-resolution spectra in a wide ratio-frequency range, such as Zeeman and hyperfine spectra in both of the ground and the excited states, are observed simultaneously by frequency analyzing the intensity fluctuation of the light transmitted through a sample cell. Demonstrating experiments are carried out with respect to the ${\mathit{D}}_{1}$ and ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ lines of Cs and Rb atoms.

Doppler-Free Laser Spectroscopy Using Polarization Modulation in Na D1 and D2 Lines

김점술, 김중복, 공홍진 +1 more

Doppler-free laser spectroscopy using polarization modulation has been carried out in Na D₁ and D₂ lines. The polarization of the pump beam is modulated between identically and orthogonally to a linear or circular polarization of the probe beam. The recorded signals of the hyperfine and crossover resonances are in agreement with a recent theoretical analysis of Nakayama which is based on velocity-selective optical pumping in a four-level system. Some exceptional discrepancy occuring in the D₂ is considered to be due to several relatively close lying resonances.
