Abstract

We discuss the detection of field quadrature fluctuations in conditional homodyne detection experiments and possible sources of error in such an experiment. We also present modifications to these experiments to help eliminate such errors and extend their range of applicability.

Giant Violations of Classical Inequalities through Conditional Homodyne Detection of the Quadrature Amplitudes of Light

H. J. Carmichael, H. M. Castro-Beltrán, G. T. Foster +1 more

Conditional homodyne detection is proposed as an extension of the intensity correlation technique introduced by Hanbury-Brown and Twiss [Nature (London) 177, 27 (1956)]. It detects giant quadrature amplitude fluctuations for weakly squeezed light, violating a classical bound by orders of magnitude. Fluctuations of both quadrature amplitudes are anomalously large. The squeezed quadrature also exhibits an anomalous phase.

Vacuum fluctuations and the conditional homodyne detection of squeezed light

H. J. Carmichael, Hyunchul Nha

Conditional homodyne detection of quadrature squeezing is compared with standard nonconditional detection. Whereas the latter identifies nonclassicality in a quantitative way, as a reduction of the noise power below the shot noise level, conditional detection makes a qualitative distinction between vacuum state squeezing and squeezed classical noise. Implications of this comparison for the realistic interpretation of vacuum fluctuations (stochastic electrodynamics) are discussed.

The authors show that efficient detection of quantum squeezing in a field quadrature of an optical mode is possible using homodyne detection of just one-bit resolution, as is available on optical satellites already in orbit.

Giant violations of classical inequalities by the quantum fluctuations of squeezed light

H. J. Carmichael, H. M. Castro-Beltrán, G. T. Foster +1 more

Summary form only given. The squeezing of an optical field is normally observed in the frequency domain using balanced homodyne detection to measure the fluctuation variance of a selected quadrature amplitude. The scheme amounts to a measurement of sub-Poissonian photon statistics and is sensitive to efficiencies as any such unconditional measurement is. Conditional measurements are independent of efficiencies. We propose a conditional homodyne detection scheme for observing the amplitude fluctuations of squeezed light. The central idea is to sample the photocurrent by triggering on a photon count and hence realize an efficiency independent measurement that resolves the quantum fluctuations in time. Our scheme directly measures the correlation function.

We propose imaging techniques that utilized quantum fluctuation a nalysis of a squeezed vacuum field to image opaque objects at low-photon environment. Our method uses a CCD camera-based homodyne detection, allowing noise quadrature selection.
