Exact solution to a strongly coupled Hubbard model in one dimension for high- Tc superconductors

Jamil Tahir‐Kheli, William A. Goddard

A Hamiltonian for the motion of oxygen holes strongly coupled to the Cu spins in a one-dimensional (1D) Cu-O lattice is solved exactly for all dopings. This Hamiltonian retains the dominant O-hole hopping term, that is, spin-exchange hopping of the hole spin with the intervening Cu spin and neglects the weaker non-spin-exchange hopping term. The excitations naturally separate into two independent quasiparticles: spinons and holons. It is this Hamiltonian that should be taken as the correct zeroth-order Hamiltonian from which perturbation theory should be applied. We show that the spinon spectrum is the spectrum of the 1D antiferromagnet incommensurate with the Cu lattice and the holons are spinless noninteracting fermions in a cosine band. The Cu-Cu spin correlation in the ground state increases linearly with doping from antiferromagnetic (-0.443) at x=0 to ferromagnetic (\ensuremath{\approxeq}0.19) at x=1.

Particle-hole asymmetry in the dynamical spin and charge responses of corner-shared 1D cuprates

Shaozhi Li, Alberto Nocera, Umesh Kumar +1 more

Abstract Although many experiments imply that oxygen orbitals play an essential role in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates, their precise role in collective spin and charge excitations and superconductivity is not yet fully understood. Here, we study the doping-dependent dynamical spin and charge structure factors of single and multi-orbital ( p d ) models for doped one-dimensional corner-shared spin-chain cuprates using several numerically exact methods. In doing so, we determine the orbital composition of the collective spin and charge excitations of cuprates, with important implications for our understanding of these materials. For example, we observe a particle-hole asymmetry in the orbital-resolved charge excitations, which is directly relevant to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments and not captured by the single-band Hubbard model. Our results imply that one must explicitly include the oxygen degrees of freedom in order to fully understand some experimental observations on cuprate materials.

Dynamics of strong-coupling models for cuprate superconductors: Exact results on finite lattices

H. B. Schuettler, C.-X. Chen, A. J. Fedro

We discuss recent applications of exact numerical continued fraction expansion (CFE) techniques to calculate dynamical correlation functions of various strong-coupling models related to the high-temperature cuprate superconductors. For the two-dimensional square-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we present exact results for the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor on finite-sized lattices and compare them to approximate results from a Schwinger boson mean-field theory, recently proposed by Arovas and Auerbach. We find that the mean-field theory represents a very good approximation to the exact spin excitation spectra and to the static spin correlations. We then investigation the dynamical spin-spin structure factor and the single-particle spectral function for finite model clusters with dopant induced hole-type charge carriers, in the strong-coupling limit of both the single-band Hubbard model (t-J-model) and the three-band Hubbard model (Kondo-Heisenberg model). Our results are consistent with the physical picture recently proposed by Zhang and Rice which implies an approximate mapping of the low-energy states in the three-band model onto an effective single-band theory. 33 refs., 4 figs.
