Interaction of a classical laser field with a model Rydberg atom in a mixed state prepared by entanglement with few-photon quantum light

Abstract

The dynamics a model Rydberg atom prepared initially in a mixed state is investigated in a classical laser field. The possibility of interference stabilization regime is studied and the influence of parameters of initial mixed state on the ionization process is analyzed. In the case when initial atomic mixed state is formed due to entanglement with few-photon non-classical light the possibility to extract the information about initial atomic density matrix from the atomic behavior in the further applied classical laser field is discussed.

Coherent control of interaction and entanglement of a Rydberg atom with few photons

Polina R. Sharapova, Olga V. Tikhonova

The interaction of a model Rydberg atom with a single photon quantum field is investigated. The atom is considered in the model of 'several bound states+continuum', so that the field-induced ionization from initially populated Rydberg states as well as the resonance coupling with a lower-lying bound state are taken into account. The significant suppression of the ionization due to interference mechanism is established and strong entanglement with a quantum field subsystem is found. Methods to control the atomic behavior and to produce strongly entangled atom–photon states are suggested. The possibility to measure the degree of entanglement experimentally is demonstrated.

Strong field effects in the system of two interacting Rydberg atoms

Ivan A. Burenkov, Olga V. Tikhonova

The ionization dynamics of two interacting Rydberg atoms in a strong laser field has been investigated. Each atom has been described in the “two discrete levels + continuum” model. Quasienergy states in this system, which describe field-dressed atoms, have been studied. It has been shown that one of the quasienergy states corresponds to the formation of an atomic state stable against ionization, which leads to the interference stabilization regime first observed in the case of individual atoms in [M. V. Fedorov and A. M. Movsesian, J. Phys. B 21 , L155 (1988)]. Methods for creating entangled states in this system have been proposed and the dynamics of entanglement in the process of interaction with the laser field has been analyzed.

Ionization and entanglement of two interacting Rydberg atoms in a strong laser field

Ivan A. Burenkov, Olga V. Tikhonova

Dynamics of ionization and entanglement of two Rydberg atoms interacting with each other and with external strong laser field is investigated. The phenomenon of interference stabilization of the bipartite atomic system is established in a strong field limit. The production of highly-entangled state of the studied atoms is shown to be realized. The possibility to control the evolution and time-dependent entanglement of the examined multilevel q-dit system is demonstrated.

Phase control of the degree of ionization of Rydberg atoms by a strong laser field

Н. П. Полуэктов, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

It is shown that the rate and degree of ionization of an atom can be controlled by preparing a specific superposition of Rydberg states. This effect is due to the Raman interaction of Rydberg levels via resonant lower-lying levels of the atom. Depending on the initial population of an atom interacting with a strong laser field, the atom either ionizes completely or exhibits an extremely high degree of stability (in this case the probability of the atom remaining in a bound state when the laser pulse is switched off is close to 1). It is shown that states which are stable against ionization decay or, conversely, decay rapidly into the continuum can be prepared using double laser pulses with a controllable time delay.

Coherence and interference in a Rydberg atom in a strong laser field: excitation, ionization, and emission of light

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, Misha Ivanov

Excitation and photoionization of Rydberg wave packets are described. Interference of bound-free transitions from many coherently populated Rydberg levels is shown to affect the dependence of the photoionization probability on the duration of interaction. Strong-field interference effects in such a system are described also. The most important of these is the field-induced interference stabilization of Rydberg atoms in a strong ionizing field. The intensity range in which this effect can exist is determined. The results derived are used for a qualitative model describing supercontinuum emission in the process of multiphoton ionization.

Dynamics of ionisation and entanglement in the 'atom + quantum electromagnetic field' system

Polina R. Sharapova, Olga V. Tikhonova

The dynamics of a model Rydberg atom in a strong nonclassical electromagnetic field is investigated. The field-induced transitions to the continuum involving different numbers of photons (with intermediate states in the discrete spectrum) are taken into account and the specific features of ionisation in 'squeezed' field states are considered in comparison with the case of classical light. A significant decrease in the ionisation rate is found, which is caused by the interference stabilisation of the atomic system. The entanglement of the atomic and field subsystems, the temporal dynamics of the correlations found, and the possibility of measuring them are analysed.
