Photon echoes in strong magnetic fields

Abstract

The polarization properties of photon echoes in strong magnetic field, when the action of this field during the time of propagation of the exciting pulses and the echo signal through the resonant gaseous medium cannot be neglected, are studied theoretically. The photon echo polarization in strong magnetic field cannot be described by the polarization vector but rather by the polarization matrix. The degree of the photon echo polarization decreases with the increase of the magnetic field strength. The dependence of the photon echo intensity on the magnetic field strength was also analyzed numerically. In strong magnetic field the fast oscillations of this intensity appear to be damping and modulated by the slower ones. The spectrum of these oscillations depend also on the spectra of the exciting pulses, so that in case of small area of the first exciting pulse its temporal shape may be reconstructed from the oscillations of the echo intensity versus the magnetic field strength.

Collision-induced stimulated photon echoes in ‘strong’ magnetic field

Решетов Владимир Александрович

Abstract Collision-induced stimulated photon echoes formed in a gaseous medium on the transition with the angular momentum change J a = 0 → J b = 1 under the action of ‘strong’ longitudinal magnetic field, when the echo pulse becomes unpolarized, are considered with an account of elastic depolarizing collisions. In the case of narrow spectral line the explicit expressions for the echo polarization density matrix and the degree of polarization are obtained. In the case of broad spectral line the results of the numeric calculations reproduce qualitatively the curve obtained in the experiments with ytterbium vapor.

Collision echo in magnetic field

Решетов Владимир Александрович, Е. Н. Попов, Igor V. Yevseyev

The effects of the longitudinal magnetic field on the collision photon echo, which is formed by two laser pulses with orthogonal polarizations on the transition with the angular momentum change J a = 0 → J b = 1 and arises due to the action of the elastic depolarizing collisions, are studied theoretically. It is shown that weak magnetic field acts to diminish the intensity of the collision echo up to zero, providing the tools for measuring the relaxation rates due to such collisions. With the further increase of the magnetic field strength the echo intensity reveals almost pure harmonic oscillations, though in strong magnetic field the echo appears not due to the action of collisions but mainly due to the action of the magnetic field, so it becomes not collision but conventional photon echo. However the comparison of the amplitudes of the collision echo in zero magnetic field with the maximum echo amplitude in strong magnetic field yields one more way to measure the relaxation rates due to elastic depolarizing collisions.

Stimulated photon echo in magnetic field: research for optical memory

Н. Н. Рубцова, В. Н. Ищенко, Хворостов Евгений Борисович +2 more

Shape correlation and magnetic field control of stimulated photon echo (SPE) are investigated as basic properties useful for optical data storage and treatment. The SPE polarization was investigated in ytterbium vapour at the intercombination transition (6s6p) 3P1 → (6s2) 1S0 for the first time in a wide range of longitudinal magnetic field strength. SPE was generated by three resonant laser pulses of identical linear polarization and wave vectors directed symmetrically at small angles to the axis of cylindric vapour cell. SPE polarization is close to linear one in zero magnetic field. As magnetic field increases, the SPE polarization acquires ellipticity with the ellipse axis rotated around magnetic field vector. Components of SPE polarization show oscillations versus magnetic field with higher contrast of the oscillations in the weak field.

Polarization rotation of photon echo at J = 0 ↔ 1 transition in magnetic field

В. Н. Ищенко, Sergei A. Kochubei, Хворостов Евгений Борисович +2 more

Detailed experimental analysis of photon echo polarization in a longitudinal magnetic field is performed for the first time at the simplest quantum transition J = 1 ↔ J = 0 for which the non-Faraday rotation of photon echo polarization plane was predicted. The echo was generated at the intercombination transition (6s6p) 3P1 → (6s2) 1S0 of 174Yb by two resonant laser pulses of linear (parallel or mutually orthogonal) polarization, and the angled echo optical scheme was applied for the detection. At the magnetic field strength ℬ ⩽ 5 G the photon echo has polarization very close to linear one; its polarization plane rotates around magnetic field vector, and photon echo polarization components and integral echo power oscillate versus ℬ from its maximum value to zero, in agreement with theory. At a stronger magnetic field ℬ ∼ 40 G photon echo power oscillations disappear, no preferable orientation of polarization vector is observed; the fluctuations of exciting radiation spectrum are supposed to be responsible for this "non-polarized" echo.

Collision-induced stimulated photon echo in magnetic field

Решетов Владимир Александрович

The action of the longitudinal magnetic field on the collision-induced stimulated photon echo formed on the transition with the angular momentum change is studied theoretically. It is shown that this action depends essentially on the sign of the difference in the orientation and alignment relaxation rates of the excited level b. If , then the echo intensity in a weak magnetic field increases with the increase in the magnetic field strength, while in the alternative case it decreases up to zero value. The formulae enabling the determination of the magnitude of the difference from the experimental study of the oscillations of the echo intensity with the increase in the magnetic field strength are obtained.

Polarization rotation of photon echoes in cesium vapor in a magnetic field

Thomas M. Baer, Isaac D. Abella

We report observations of the rotation of the plane of polarization of photon echoes by a weak axial magnetic field. The echoes are generated on the $6{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ to $7{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ transition in cesium (4593 \AA{}) by a sequence of two collinear laser pulses polarized in the same direction. When a magnetic field is applied along the propagation axis the polarization vector of the echo is rotated from that of the exciting pulses. We measure the intensity of the photon echo signal polarized orthogonal to the excitation pulse polarization as a function of magnetic field and pulse separation. The theoretical analysis decribes cesium atoms as a nondegenerate multilevel system, consisting of ground and excited Zeeman-split hyperfine-structure levels. The theory presented predicts the observed dependence on magnetic field strength, pulse separation, and excited- and ground-state $g$ factors. A novel method of observing photon echoes is described which uses the polarization rotation effect to replace electro-optical shutters often employed in photon echo experiments.
