Interference of biphotons upon parametric down-conversion in the field of biharmonic pumping

Abstract

We report theoretical investigation of interference of biphotons emitted upon type-II collinear parametric down-conversion in the case of biharmonic pumping. Interference occurs when an optical or electronic shutter is used as an amplitude modulator in the experimental scheme. The phase of the interference is shown to depend on the time interval between the instant the shutter is opened and the instant corresponding to the maximum pump intensity. The main parameter affecting the visibility of the interference pattern is a time interval during which the shutter is open.

The interference of biphotons emitted during collinear parametric scattering from two spatially separated regions is investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that in this case the phase of the interference is determined by the pump wavelength and there is no need to equalize the optical paths for radiation from different regions.

First-order interference of nonclassical light emitted spontaneously at different times

We study the first-order interference in spontaneous parametric down-conversion generated by two pump pulses that are well distinguishable in time. The observed modulation in the angular distribution of the signal photon can only be explained in terms of a quantum-mechanical description based on biphoton states. The condition for observing interference in the signal channel is shown to depend on the parameters of the idler photon.

Theory and experiment of two-photon $lquot$direct$rquot$ interference for type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion with an ultrafast pulse laser pump

Fourth-order spatial interference of entangled photon pairs generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a femtosecond pulse laser has been performed for the first time. In theory, it takes into account the transverse correlation between the two photons and is used to calculate the dependence of the visibility of the interference pattern obtained in Young’s double-slit experiment. In this experiment, a short focal length lens and two narrow band interference filters were adopted to eliminate the effects of the broadband pump laser and improve the visibility of the interference pattern under the condition of nearly collinear light and degenerate phase matching.

Interference of fields emitted spontaneously at different times

S. P. Kulik, Y.-H. Kim, Yanhua H. Shih

We report the first observation of interference in the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) radiation emitted at different time moments. SPDC is a nonlinear optical process in which a higher energy UV pump photon splits into two daughter photons (usually called signal and idler) inside a noncentrosymmetric crystal when the phase matching condition is satisfied. For the experimental setup, we used two temporally separated pump pulses generating SPDC in a type II BBO crystal.

Theory of fourfold interference with photon pairs from spatially separated sources

Hui Rong Zhang, Ruo Peng Wang

We present a theory for fourfold quantum interference of photons generated from independent spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. Closed-form expressions for fourfold quantum interference patterns and visibility are found. The theoretical result for fourfold quantum interference patterns is in good agreement with experimental data reported. Detailed numerical calculations for the dependence of fourfold quantum interference visibility on experimentally controllable parameters are carried out. It is found out that higher visibility can be achieved for small biphoton width, short pump pulse coherence time, and narrow bandwidth of spectral filters. The optimal condition for obtaining at the same time higher fourfold interference visibility and intensity is also discussed.
