Emergent criticalities and phase transitions in a monomer-dimer mixture on a honeycomb lattice

Abstract

We study a monomer-dimer mixture on a honeycomb lattice as a simplified model for a spin ice in two dimension. In a low monomer-density region, an effective description is given by the dual sine-Gordon theory. On the other hand, in intermediate and high monomer-density regions, the Potts lattice-gas theory can be adopted. Based on these, we extract a renormalization-group flow diagram, which includes stable and unstable fixed points corresponding to M 5 and M 6 in the minimal models of the conformal field theory. We carry out numerical transfer-matrix calculations to determine the phase diagram, and we provide evidence to check our prediction.

Monomer-Dimer Mixture on a Honeycomb Lattice

Hiromi Otsuka

We study a monomer-dimer mixture defined on a honeycomb lattice as a toy model for the spin-ice system in a magnetic field. In a low-doping region of monomers, the effective description of this system is given by the dual sine-Gordon model. In intermediate- and strong-doping regions, the Potts lattice gas theory can be employed. Synthesizing these results, we construct a renormalization-group flow diagram, which includes the stable and unstable fixed points corresponding to M5 and M6 in the minimal models of the conformal field theory. We perform numerical transfer-matrix calculations to determine a global phase diagram and also to proffer evidence to check our prediction.

CTMRG study of the critical behavior of an interacting-dimer model

Christophe Chatelain

Abstract The critical behavior of a dimer model with an interaction favoring parallel dimers in each plaquette of the square lattice is studied numerically using the corner transfer matrix renormalization group algorithm. The critical exponents are known to depend on the chemical potential of vacancies, or monomers. At large average density of the latter, the phase transition becomes the first-order. We compute the scaling dimensions of both the order parameter and temperature in the second-order regime and compare them with the conjecture that the critical behavior is the same as the Ashkin–Teller model on its self-dual critical line.

Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions and phase diagrams of the interacting monomer-dimer model on a checkerboard lattice

Sazi Li, Wei Li, Ziyu Chen

Using the tensor network approach, we investigate the monomer-dimer models on a checkerboard lattice, in which there are interactions (with strength $v$) between the parallel dimers on half of the plaquettes. For the fully packed interacting dimer model, we observe a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition between the low-temperature symmetry breaking and the high-temperature critical phases; for the doped monomer-dimer case with finite chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$, we also find an order-disorder phase transition which is of second order instead. We use the boundary matrix product state approach to detect the KT and second-order phase transitions and obtain the phase diagrams $v\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$ and $\ensuremath{\mu}\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$. Moreover, for the noninteracting monomer-dimer model (setting $\ensuremath{\mu}=\ensuremath{\nu}=0$), we get an extraordinarily accurate determination of the free energy per site (negative of the monomer-dimer constant ${h}_{2}$) as $f=\ensuremath{-}0.662\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}798\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}972\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}833\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}746$ with the dimer density $n=0.638\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}123\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}109\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}228\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}547$, both of 15 correct digits.

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond-like decorated honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field from the perspective of localized magnons and exact diagonalization

Katarína Karľová, Malo Rouxel, Jozef Strečka +1 more

The spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field is investigated using complementary analytical and numerical methods. The ground-state phase diagram comprises Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic, dimer-tetramer, monomer-dimer, spin-canted, and saturated paramagnetic phases, giving rise to characteristic magnetization plateaus, continuous and discontinuous field-induced transitions. In the highly frustrated regime, a localized-magnon approach based on an effective classical lattice-gas model provides an accurate description of the low-temperature magnetism and thermodynamics in agreement with numerical results. At intermediate frustration, finite-temperature calculations reveal characteristic specific-heat signatures of the field-induced transitions including the development of Ising critical behavior at the field-induced transition between the monomer-dimer and Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic phase.

Diffusion on a honeycomb lattice: Real-space renormalization-group approach

Alexander Tarasenko, Lubomir Jastrabik, C. Uebing

A two-dimensional lattice-gas model with honeycomb symmetry is investigated by using the real-space renormalization group (RSRG) approach with a number of RSRG transformations based on clusters of different symmetries and sizes (up to 42 sites). The accuracy of calculations is found to be a nonmonotonic function of the size of a cluster, and to depend strongly on its symmetry. The highest obtained accuracy with respect to the determination of the critical value of the pair interaction parameter is 0.38%. The phase diagram of the Ising antiferromagnetic spin model and of the corresponding lattice-gas model is constructed with this accuracy. The ordered phase in the lattice system is shown to appear in the very narrow density interval, $0.447<n<0.553.$ In addition, the coverage dependence of the chemical diffusion coefficient and mean-square density fluctuations are studied at temperatures below the critical one. Both quantities are demonstrated to exhibit singularities at the critical coverages. The type of singularities (in particular, the critical slowdown of diffusion) is in agreement with the predictions of the scaling theory and also with recent results obtained for a model treating the effect of surface reconstruction on diffusion.

Ashkin-Teller phase transition and multicritical behavior in a classical monomer-dimer model

Satoshi Morita, Hyun‐Yong Lee, Kedar Damle +1 more

We use Monte Carlo simulations and tensor network methods to study a classical monomer-dimer model on the square lattice with a hole (monomer) fugacity $z$, an aligning dimer-dimer interaction $u$ that favors columnar order, and an attractive dimer-dimer interaction $v$ between two adjacent dimers that lie on the same principal axis of the lattice. The Monte Carlo simulations of finite size systems rely on our grand-canonical generalization of the dimer worm algorithm, while the tensor network computations are based on a uniform matrix product ansatz for the eigenvector of the row-to-row transfer matrix that work directly in the thermodynamic limit. The phase diagram has nematic, columnar order and fluid phases, and a nonzero temperature multicritical point at which all three meet. For any fixed $v/u<\ensuremath{\infty}$, we argue that this multicritical point continues to be located at a nonzero hole fugacity ${z}_{\mathrm{mc}}(v/u)>0$; our numerical results confirm this theoretical expectation but find that ${z}_{\mathrm{mc}}(v/u)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ very rapidly as $v/u\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. Our numerical results also confirm the theoretical expectation that the corresponding multicritical behavior is in the universality class of the four-state Potts multicritical point on critical line of the two-dimensional Ashkin-Teller model.
