PHASE CONJUGATION IN LIQUIDS IN THE PICOSECOND RANGE

Abstract

Phase conjugation is produced in picosecond range, in different liquids, by degenerate four wave mixing, and by stimulated backward Rayleigh and Raman scatterings. The intensities and efficiencies are measured, and the influences of the exciting power and the non linear medium length are studied. The feasibility of image reconstruction, even with a change in the wavelength due to Raman scattering, is proved and analysed theoretically and experimentally. Temporal applications are proposed.

SOME THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS OF PHASE CONJUGATION IN THE ULTRAVIOLET

B. J. Feldman, Irving J. Bigio, Robert A. Fisher +1 more

We report on ultraviolet phase conjugation studies using KrF, XeF, and quadrupled Nd : YAG lasers. Processes studied include stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and degenerate four-wave mixing. In some cases phase conjugate efficiencies of greater than 80% are observed. Implications and applications of these phenomena will be discussed.

Phase Conjugate Optics and Nonlinear Optical Phenomena in Optical Fibers

Au Yeung, John Chen Wei

Part I of this thesis describes the theoretical and experimental aspects of a new area in coherent optics known as phase conjugate optics. By using nonlinear optical mixing techniques, the complex conjugate of an arbitrary incident monochromatic wave can be generated. In particular, the theory of the degenerate four-wave mixing technique is presented. Experimental observation of phase conjugate wave front generation in a liquid crystal material (MBBA) is described. The ability of the conjugate wave front to correct for phase aberration is demonstrated. The quantum mechanical origin of the nonlinear third order susceptibility responsible for the four-wave mixing process is illustrated in an atomic system. Because of a finite memory time of such an atomic system, the electromagnetic waves taking part in the mixing process need not occur simultaneously. The applications of the phase conjugation process to real-time information processing and the characteristics of a phase conjugate resonator are discussed in detail. The ability of an optical fiber to confine the propagation of electromagnetic waves over a long distance and within a small cross sectional area implies that large optical intensities can be maintained over a long " interaction length even at moderate incident optical power. Part II of this thesis describes some third order nonlinear optical phenomena that have been observed under this condition. Especially, phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in a fiber has been shown to require significantly less pumping power. The theoretical and experimental studies of four-wave mixing in a liquid-filled fiber are presented. Extensive experimental efforts have been devoted over the last few years to the study of stimulated Raman scattering and the oscillation of the Stokes radiation inside fibers. A detailed theoretical treatment will be given here to describe these effects. The analysis shows that pump depletion due to the nonlinear process is very important in describing the stimulated Raman scattering in low loss fibers and is the dominant saturation effect in a fiber Raman oscillator. Finally, the implications of nonlinear optical phenomena to fiber optic communication will be mentioned.

Optical phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing: spatial and temporal aspects

M.L. Roblin, C. Joubert, Herve Coic +2 more

We describe an experiment in phase conjugation using holographic degenerate four-wave mixing with picosecond pulses. Spatial and temporal distortions are simultaneously introduced on the probe beam, respectively, by a ground glass and a Gires-Tournois interferometer. We experimentally show that after it recrosses the ground glass we obtain a time reversed pulse on the reconstructed beam. Its temporal shape is the same as that without the ground glass. We theoretically discuss this result and show that in our configuration the temporal effect depends only on the hologram dimension parallel to the direction of propagation of the beam, while the spatial phase conjugation is related to the dimensions in the perpendicular plane.

DEGENERATE FOUR-WAVE MIXING AND PHASE CONJUGATION IN ORGANIC DYE SOLUTIONS

Cunkai Wu, Cui Yang-zhao, Wang Zhi-ying +1 more

Phase conjugation of forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing by using nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in orgnic dye solutions. was investigated. Good-quality reconstructed images have been obtained by direct wave-front phase conjugation. Reconstructed images with a resolution of 6 lines/mm were obtained. For rhodamin 6G in alcolol solution of 2.5×10-5 mole, nonlinear reflection coefficient up to 10% has been obtained.

INVESTIGATION OF DEGENERATE FOUR-WAVE MIXING AND PHASE CONJUGATION IN ORGANIC DYE SOLUTIONS

Cunkai Wu, FAN JUN-YIN, WANG ZHI-YING +1 more

Phase conjugation of backward-and forward-wave produced by degenerate four-wave mixing using a nearly resonantly enhanced nonlinearity in four-level organic dye solutions was investigated. The conversion efficiency of 22% had been obtained in a 2.5 X 10-5 - molar solution of Chlorophyll A in methylalcohol with a 5 mm interaction length and a pumping energy of ~ 8 mJ from SH of a Q-switched Nd: YAG. Degene-rate four-wave mixing by two-photon resonant-enhancement in the solution of rhodamine 6G in alcohol was studied. Measurements were performed which described the dependence of nonlinear reflectivities on the molar concentrations of the media and the intensities of the pumping and object waves. Phase conjugation characteristics of forward-wave in four-wave mixing process were theoretically analysed. Experiments have cofirmed the theoretical prediction. The method of quartet degenerate four-wave mixing had been ex-tended to the doublet degenerate case. Using this method image conversion from 1.06 μm to 5320 ? had been realized with a conversion efficiency of 25% in a 5 mm long satu-rable absorber made of organic dye 9740 solution in dichloroethane. Theoretical analy-sis showed that using a medium, which is a near resonant absorber for the infrared object wave but is transparent for the visible reconstruction wave, the conversion efficiency may be well in excess of unity.
