Electromagnetically induced transparency with broadband laser pulses

Abstract

We suggest a scheme to slow and stop broadband laser pulses inside an atomic medium using electromagnetically induced transparency. Extending the suggestion of Harris et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 552 (1993)], the key idea is to use matched Fourier components for the probe and coupling laser beams.

Optically controlled delays for broadband pulses

Qingqing Sun, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Jonathan P. Dowling +2 more

We propose a scheme that provides large controllable delays for broadband optical pulses. The system is based on the steep dispersion of a coherently driven medium, in which the narrow electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) band is overcome by using spatial and temporal processing.

Broadband Pulse Propagation with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency: Splitting of Adiabatic and Nonadiabatic Components

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs

The propagation of a broadband pulse through a dense resonant medium with a narrow transparency window is considered. We show that the pulse splits into a slowly propagating adiabatic part and a fast nonadiabatic part

Freezing Light via Atomic Coherence

Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Marlan O. Scully +1 more

As has been shown in recent Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) experiments a coherently prepared atomic media can be used to slow the group velocity of light to 10's of meters per second. We here prove by direct calculation that it should be possible to freeze the laser pulse, i.e. to bring it to a full stop, by choosing the experimental parameters properly.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Huy Bang, Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
