Translation invariance and the problem of the bipolaron

Abstract

Differences between translation-invariant and broken-symmetry bipolaron theories are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the Bogolyubov?Tyablikov canonical transformation allows collective coordinates to be introduced in a regular way for two particles in a quantum field and that for the case of the bipolaron the resulting electron?electron interaction in a phonon field depends on the electron coordinate difference alone. Predictions using a revised solution of the nonlinear differential equations for a bipolaron are given. It is shown that solving bipolaron equations numerically reduces the total bipolaron energies compared to known variational results.

Translation invariant theory of polaron (bipolaron) and the problem of quantizing near the classical solution

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

A physical interpretation of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons is presented, some results of their existence are discussed. Consideration is given to the problem of quantization in the vicinity of the classical solution in the quantum field theory. The lowest variational estimate is obtained for the bipolaron energy E (η) with E (0) = -0.440636α 2 , where α is a constant of electron-phonon coupling, η is a parameter of ion binding.

Comment on ‘‘Adiabatic theory for the bipolaron’’

M. A. Smondyrev, J. T. Devreese

Comments are given on the application of the Bogoliubov-Tyablikov approach to the bipolaron problem in a recent paper by Lakhno [Phys. Rev. B 51, 3512 (1995)]. This author believes that his model (1) is the translation-invariant adiabatic theory of bipolarons and (2) gives asymptotically exact solutions in the adiabatic limit while the other approaches are considered as either phenomenological or variational in nature. Numerical results by Lakhno are in contradiction with all other papers published on the subject because his model leads to much lower energies. Thus, the author concludes that bipolarons ``are more stable than was considered before.'' We prove that both the analytical and the numerical results presented by Lakhno are wrong. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Mathematical foundations of the translation-invariant bipolaron theory of superconductivity

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

The monograph presents the theory of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons based on the theory of squeezed vacuum wave functions. It is shown that the Tulub ansatz, which establishes a connection between the generalized Bogolyubov transformation with the unitary squeezed operator gives a solution to the spectral problem for a bipolaron. The solutions obtained are used to construct a theory of superconductivity based on the Froehlich Hamiltonian with a strong electron-phonon interaction. The role of Cooper pairs in it is played by TI bipolarons of spatially delocalized electrons with a small correlation length. The theory developed explains a large number of experiments on the thermodynamic, spectroscopic and transport characteristics of high-temperature superconductors, Josephson tunneling, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, neutron scattering, etc. The book is intended for physicists and mathematicians who work in the field of the theory of condensed matter, as well as graduate students and senior students of universities.

Application of Quantum Field Theory Methods to the Development of the Translational-Invariant Polaron and Bipolaron Theory

N. I. Kashirina

The polaron and bipolaron energy functionals obtained in the framework of quantum field theory have been studied. Exact analytical expressions for the effective functionals are derived in terms of the two-parametrical trial function for a polaron and the three-parametrical one for a bipolaron. Variational solutions are found for the energies of the systems under study in the case of the intermediate values of Fr¨ohlich electron-phonon coupling constant, 4 ≤ a ≤20.

2 Pekar’s ansatz and the strong coupling problem in polaron theory

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

A detailed consideration is given to the translation-invariant theory of Tulub polaron constructed without the use of Pekar ansatz.A fundamental result of the theory is that the value of the polaron energy is lower than that obtained on the basis of Pekar ansatz which was considered as an asymptotically exact solution in the strong coupling limit. In the case of bipolarons the theory yields the best values of the coupling energy and critical parameters of their stability.Numerous physical consequences of the existence of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons are discussed.

A translation invariant bipolaron in the Holstein model and superconductivity

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

Large-radius translation invariant (TI) bipolarons are considered in a one-dimensional Holstein molecular chain. Criteria of their stability are obtained. The energy of a translation invariant bipolaron is shown to be lower than that of a bipolaron with broken symmetry. The results obtained are applied to the problem of superconductivity in 1D-systems. It is shown that TI-bipolaron mechanism of Bose-Einstein condensation can support superconductivity even for infinite chain.
