2 Pekar’s ansatz and the strong coupling problem in polaron theory

Abstract

A detailed consideration is given to the translation-invariant theory of Tulub polaron constructed without the use of Pekar ansatz.A fundamental result of the theory is that the value of the polaron energy is lower than that obtained on the basis of Pekar ansatz which was considered as an asymptotically exact solution in the strong coupling limit. In the case of bipolarons the theory yields the best values of the coupling energy and critical parameters of their stability.Numerous physical consequences of the existence of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons are discussed.

The virial theorem and the ground state problem in polaron theory

N. I. Kashirina, Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno, A. V. Tulub

The virial theorem for the translation-invariant theory of a polaron [3] is discussed. It is shown that, in [3], Tulub made a nonoptimal choice of variational parameters in the strong-coupling limit, which led to the violation of the virial relations. The introduction of an additional variational parameter to the test function reduces the polaron energy and makes it possible to satisfy the relations of the virial theorem for a strong-coupling polaron (the Pekar 1: 2: 3: 4 theorem).

Translation invariant theory of polaron (bipolaron) and the problem of quantizing near the classical solution

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

A physical interpretation of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons is presented, some results of their existence are discussed. Consideration is given to the problem of quantization in the vicinity of the classical solution in the quantum field theory. The lowest variational estimate is obtained for the bipolaron energy E (η) with E (0) = -0.440636α 2 , where α is a constant of electron-phonon coupling, η is a parameter of ion binding.

Comments on “Translation-invariant bipolarons and the problem of high-temperature superconductivity”

Serghei N. Klimin, J. T. Devreese

We comment on the recent results of Refs. [1], [2] on the bipolaron problem derived using an approximation of Gross–Tulub. It is proved that, contrary to the claim made in Refs. [1], [2], the bipolaron ground-state energy calculated there in the strong-coupling approximation has not been shown to constitute a variational upper bound.

Mathematical foundations of the translation-invariant bipolaron theory of superconductivity

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

The monograph presents the theory of translation-invariant polarons and bipolarons based on the theory of squeezed vacuum wave functions. It is shown that the Tulub ansatz, which establishes a connection between the generalized Bogolyubov transformation with the unitary squeezed operator gives a solution to the spectral problem for a bipolaron. The solutions obtained are used to construct a theory of superconductivity based on the Froehlich Hamiltonian with a strong electron-phonon interaction. The role of Cooper pairs in it is played by TI bipolarons of spatially delocalized electrons with a small correlation length. The theory developed explains a large number of experiments on the thermodynamic, spectroscopic and transport characteristics of high-temperature superconductors, Josephson tunneling, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, neutron scattering, etc. The book is intended for physicists and mathematicians who work in the field of the theory of condensed matter, as well as graduate students and senior students of universities.

3 Large-radius Holstein polaron and the problem of spontaneous symmetry breaking

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

A translation-invariant solution is found for a large-radius Holstein polaron whose energy in the strong coupling limit is lower than that obtained by Holstein. The wave function corresponding to this solution is delocalized.A conclusion is made about the absence of a spontaneous symmetry breaking in the quantum system discussed.
