Abstract

Based jointly on idempotents and modular Golomb rulers, we construct a class of nonbinary cyclic low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The defining parity-check matrix is a sparse circulant, on which we put two constraints: 1) the characteristic polynomial is an idempotent, 2) the nonzero elements of the first row are located on a modular Golomb ruler. We show that the second constraint forms a necessary and sufficient condition for the Tanner graph to have no cycles of length 4. The minimum distance of the code is proved equal to the column weight of the parity-check matrix plus one. A search algorithm is presented, with which we obtain some high rate codes with large minimum distances. The issue of code equivalence is also discussed. Simulation results show that the obtained codes perform well under iterative decoding.

Construction of short-block nonbinary LDPC codes based on cyclic codes

Hengzhou Xu, Baoming Bai, Min Zhu +2 more

In this paper, we focus on short-block nonbinary LDPC (NB-LDPC) codes based on cyclic codes. Based on Tanner graphs' isomorphism, we present an efficient search algorithm for finding non-isomorphic binary cyclic LDPC codes. Notice that the parity-check matrix H of the resulting code is square and not of full rank, and its row weight and column weight are the same. By replacing the ones in the same column of H with a nonzero element of finite fields GF(q), a class of NB-LDPC codes over GF(q) is obtained. Numerical results show that the constructed codes perform well over the AWGN channel and have fast decoding convergence. Therefore, the proposed NB-LDPC codes provide a promising coding scheme for low-latency and high-reliability communications.

Cyclic and Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes on Constrained Parity-Check Matrices and Their Trapping Sets

Qin Huang, Qiuju Diao, Shu Lin +1 more

This paper is concerned with construction and structural analysis of both cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes, particularly low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. It consists of three parts. The first part shows that a cyclic code given by a parity-check matrix in circulant form can be decomposed into descendant cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes of various lengths and rates. Some fundamental structural properties of these descendant codes are developed, including the characterization of the roots of the generator polynomial of a cyclic descendant code. The second part of the paper shows that cyclic and quasi-cyclic descendant LDPC codes can be derived from cyclic finite-geometry LDPC codes using the results developed in the first part of the paper. This enlarges the repertoire of cyclic LDPC codes. The third part of the paper analyzes the trapping set structure of regular LDPC codes whose parity-check matrices satisfy a certain constraint on their rows and columns. Several classes of finite-geometry and finite-field cyclic and quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with large minimum distances are shown to have no harmful trapping sets of size smaller than their minimum distances. Consequently, their error-floor performances are dominated by their minimum distances.

A class of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes from B_2(mod m)sequences

Zhang Guo

A new class of binary low-density parity-check(LDPC)codes is proposed based on B2(mod m) sequences. The parity-check matrix of such a code has a column weight of three and a row weight of an arbitrary integer, and a quasi-cyclic structure. The parity-check matrix also has a girth at least 8,and corresponds to a code with minimal distance at least 12.When m is prime,an 8-cycles reduction method is presented to completely avoid the two types of 8-cycles within the total four types existed in the Tanner graph.Simulation results show that, for a prime integer m,the new LDPC code outperforms the random(quasi-)regular counterpart generated by the PEG algorithm. Finally,a heuristic algorithm based on a strategy called neighboring extension search is presented to search for the B2(mod m)sequences whose lengths approach or meet the upper bound.

Construction of High-Rate Regular Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Cyclic Difference Families

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.

Searching for Binary and Nonbinary Block and Convolutional LDPC Codes

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Rolf Johannesson

A unified approach to search for and optimize codes determined by their sparse parity-check matrices is presented. Replacing the nonzero elements of a binary parity-check matrix (the base or parent matrix) either by circulants or by companion matrices of elements from a finite field GF(2m), we obtain quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (LDPC) block codes and binary images of nonbinary LDPC block codes, respectively. By substituting monomials of a formal variable D, we obtain the polynomial description of an LDPC convolutional code. A set of performance measures applicable to different classes of LDPC codes is considered, and a greedy algorithm for code performance optimization is presented. The heart of the new optimization algorithm is a fast procedure for searching for LDPC codes with large girth of their Tanner graphs. For a few classes of LDPC codes, examples of codes combining good error-correcting performance with compact representation are obtained. In particular, we present optimized convolutional LDPC codes and conclude that the LDPC block codes are still superior to their convolutional counterparts if both decoding complexity and coding delay are considered. Moreover, a specific channel model can easily be embedded into the optimization loop. Thereby, the code can be optimized for a specific channel. The efficiency of such an optimization is demonstrated via an example of faster than Nyquist (FTN) signaling using LDPC codes. The FTN strategy combined with a rate R = 1/2 LDPC code of length 64800 optimized for effective data rate R = 3/4 gains more than 0.5 dB compared with the standard LDPC codes of the same rate and length. The obtained gain corresponds to transmission at the capacity of the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel. In most numerical examples, we consider codes with bidiagonal structure of the parity-check matrix. This restriction preserves low encoding complexity and allows fair comparison with codes selected for communication standards.

Rate-Compatible LDPC Codes Based on Primitive Polynomials and Golomb Rulers

Massimo Battaglioni, Marco Baldi, Franco Chiaraluce +1 more

We introduce and study a family of rate-compatible Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. The design of these codes starts from simplex codes, defined by parity-check matrices having a simple form stemming from the coefficients of a primitive polynomial. For this reason, we call the new codes Primitive Rate-Compatible LDPC (PRC-LDPC) codes. By applying puncturing to these codes, we obtain a bit-level granularity of the code rate. We show that, in order to achieve good LDPC codes, the underlying polynomials, besides being primitive, must meet some more stringent conditions with respect to those of classical punctured simplex codes. We leverage non-modular Golomb rulers to take these new requirements into account. We characterize the minimum distance properties of PRC-LDPC codes, and study and discuss their encoding and decoding complexity. Finally, we assess the error rate performance of high rate PRC-LDPC codes under iterative decoding.
