Abstract

The population transfer in a ladder-type atomic system driven by linearly polarized sech-shape femtosecond laser pulses is investigated by numerically solving Schrödinger equation without including the rotating wave approximation (RWA). It is shown that population transfer is mainly determined by the Rabi frequency (strength) of the driving laser field and the chirp rate, and that the ratio of the dipole moments and the pulse width also have a prominent effect on the population transfer. By choosing appropriate values of the above parameters, complete population transfer can be realized.

The ultrafast particle population transfer in a ■-type three-level atomic system driven by linearly polarized chirped Gauss femtosecond laser pulse is investigated by using numerical solution of the Schrdinger equation without the rotating wave approximation(RWA).It is shown that the population transfer is mainly determined by the Rabi frequency(intensity) of the driving laser field and chirp rate, and the ratio of two dipole moments and the pulse width also have obvious effect on the population transfer.By choosing suitable values of the above parameters, nearly complete population transfer(99.6%) can be realized.

Coherent population transfer in a double-Λ system driven by few-cycle laser pulses

Weifeng Yang, Shangqing Gong, Yueping Niu +1 more

The behavior of population transfer in a double-Λ system driven by linear polarized few-cycle ultrashort laser pulses is investigated numerically. A time-dependent Schrodinger equation without the rotating wave approximation is solved. It is shown that almost complete population transfer can be achieved even when the adiabatic criterion is not fulfilled. Moreover, the robustness of this scheme in terms of the Rabi frequencies and chirp rates of the pulses is explored.

Ultrafast population transfer in three-level Λ systems driven by few-cycle laser pulses

Jing Cheng, Jianying Zhou

The maximal population transfer in three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system driven by linear polarized few-cycle laser pulses is investigated numerically. A time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation without the rotating wave approximation is solved. The maximal population transfer depends critically on the chirp rate and the intensity of the pulses. Almost complete population transfer can be achieved if the difference between the transition dipole moments is not very large.

Coherent population transfer and optical dipole force by chirped Gaussian femtosecond pulses in four level 87Rb

Subhadeep Chakraborty, Amarendra K. Sarma

We report coherent population transfer(CPT) in a four level atomic system, coupled by three chirped Gaussian femtosecond pulses. CPT is studied under two specific conditions beyond the RWA. It is observed that nearly complete population transfer to the states |3> and |4> can be achieved by maintaining proper resonance condition and judiciously choosing the laser parameters. In addition to this, the transverse optical dipole force on the four-level atomic system is numerically studied. The transverse force provides an acceleration to an atom which is eight order of magnitude higher than earth’s gravitational acceleration g. The force changes from a focusing force to a defocusing one as the initial population changes from the ground states to the excited states.

Steering population transfer between electronic states of the Na 2 molecule beyond the rotating wave approximation

Yong‐Chang Han

Abstract By utilizing the time-dependent wavepacket method, we studied the population transfer between the electronic states of the Na 2 molecule driven by femtosecond laser pulses. Three electronic states, X 1 Σ g + , A 1 Σ u + and 2 1 Π g , are taken to be the initial, the intermediate and the target states, respectively. Two classes of calculations are performed for comparison: one is to invoke the rotating wave approximation (RWA), and the other is more accurate calculations without consideration of RWA (non-RWA). It is found that for this three-state-model, the RWA fails to describe the accurate population transfer process in femtosecond-pulse fields and that the adiabatic passage is hard to be constructed in the non-RWA calculations. Based on the non-RWA calculations, we determined a set of laser parameters, including the peak intensity, detuning, pulse duration and time delay, for efficient population transfer.
