Abstract

An investigation was made of stimulated Raman scattering in cesium, rubidium, and sodium vapor excited by an LZhI-507 dye laser. Discretely continuous infrared radiation in the 1.3–5.44 μ spectral range was generated at a conversion efficiency of up to 13%.

Stimulated electronic Raman scatterng in sodium vapor

Xiaofeng Han, Zhenguo Lu, Zuguang Ma +1 more

The observation of a stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) on 3s–4s transition in sodium vapor pumped by a PTP dye laser is reported. Infrared output (Stokes) tunable from 2.38 μm to 2.65 μm has been obtained as the dye laser is tuned from 334.0 nm to 338.8 nm. Maximum photon conversion efficiency is about 30%.

Investigation of electronic stimulated Raman scattering of excimer laser radiation by metal atoms

V S Verkhovskiĭ, Vladimir M. Klimkin, В. Е. Прокопьев +3 more

An experimental investigation was made of stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) of excimer laser radiation in barium, thulium, and europium vapors. The energy of XeF* laser radiation ( λ = 351 nm) converted to the yellow range (585 nm) in barium vapor was 6 mJ and the conversion efficiency was ∼39%. The spectral composition of the converted radiation is governed by the STRS, by four-wave parametric processes, and also by lasing due to the natural barium transition. Selection of the pump frequencies is required to concentrate the converted radiation at a single frequency and to reduce its divergence. Stimulated Raman scattering of XeCl* laser radiation ( λ = 308 nm) was achieved in thulium vapor at λ = 422 nm. In europium vapor in quasiresonance with the 6 s 2 8 S 0 1/2 –5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 forbidden transition, stimulated emission was obtained due to the natural 5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 –6 s 6 p 10 P 11/2 and 5 d 2 10 P 0 11/2 –6 s 6 p 10 P 3/2 transitions.

Tunable infrared laser generated via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor

R. T. V. Kung, Irving Itzkan

The conversion of a visible dye laser output into tunable infrared (IR) laser radiation via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor was investigated. Small-signal gain, threshold intensity, and conversion efficiency measurements were obtained versus pump laser detuning. Fixed-frequency IR outputs at other wavelengths were also observed. One of these, the7P_{3/2}-5D_{5/2}transition, had a strong lasing component polarized perpendicular to the pump laser polarization. Lasing near the 8523-Å resonance line was attributed to a four-wave parametric interaction as a plausible generation mechanism.

Interaction of ruby laser radiation with thallium vapor

V N Glazov, M. E. Movsesyan, G. S. Sarkisyan

An experimental investigation was made of the interaction of ruby laser radiation with a vapor of thallium atoms. Several atomic lines in the infrared range were observed and investigated for the first time. These lines were due to multiphoton excitation of the thallium atoms. The dependences of the energies of the infrared emission lines on the intensity of the exciting laser radiation indicated that they appeared because of multiphoton ionization of the atoms. Nonresonant stimulated Raman scattering involving electronic transitions between the 6P1/2 and 6P3/2 levels in the thallium atom was observed and studied. The polarization of the infrared emission lines and of the Raman lines was investigated as a function of the polarization of the exciting laser radiation. The energy efficiency of infrared conversion was ~10−5 %.

Effect of the pump absorption on generation of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering in alkali-metal vapors

A. I. Agafonov, G. G. Grigoryan, Nikolay V Znamenskiy +5 more

The main properties of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) at the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 S 1/2, 3/2 transitions in cesium atoms are studied theoretically and experimentally as functions of the atomic concentration, which was varied from 10 11 to 10 16 cm −3 . It is found that the efficiency of generation of Stokes radiation strongly depends on one-photon absorption of the pump radiation tuned near frequencies of the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 P 1/2, 3/2 transitions. By using the equation for the density matrix, which describes the evolution of a three-level system, the theory of resonance excitation of IR radiation upon one-photon absorption at an adjacent transition is developed. The theory describes well the main features of IR SERS in alkali-metal vapors.
