Explicitly connected expansion for the average value of an observable in the coupled‐cluster theory

Abstract

Abstract An explicitly connected commutator expansion for the average value of an observable in the coupled‐cluster theory is derived. Specifically, it is shown that the expectation value of an operator for the state Ψ, related to the Fermi vacuum Φ by the exponential Ansatz ψ = eT Φ, is expressed as a finite commutator series containing the cluster operator T and an auxiliary operator S, defined by a linear equation involving again a finite commutator series in T. The above result is applied to derive the explicitly connected commutator form of the order‐by‐order many‐body perturbation theory (MBPT) expansion for the expectation values and density matrices. We also show how the commutator expansion derived by us can be used as a basis for size‐extensive infinite‐order summation techniques. An operator technique of eliminating the nonlocal, “off‐energy shell” denominators from MBPT expressions is proposed and applied to obtain compact commutator formulas for the expectation values of one‐ and two‐electron operators through the fourth and third order, respectively, and for the correlation energy through the fifth order of perturbation theory. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Unitary group approach to spin‐adapted open‐shell coupled cluster theory

Bogumił Jeziorski, Josef Paldus, Piotr Jankowski

Abstract We show that the irreducible tensor operators of the unitary group provide a natural operator basis for the exponential Ansatz which preserves the spin symmetry of the reference state, requires a minimal number of independent cluster amplitudes for each substitution order, and guarantees the invariance of the correlation energy under unitary transformations of core, open‐shell, and virtual orbitals. When acting on the closed‐shell reference state with nc doubly occupied and nv unoccupied (virtual) orbitals, the irreducible tensor operators of the group U(nc) ⊗ U(nV) generate all Gelfand‐Tsetlin (GT) states corresponding to appropriate irreducible representation of U(nc + nv). The tensor operators generating the M‐tuply excited states are easily constructed by symmetrizing products of M unitary group generators with the Wigner operators of the symmetric group SM. This provides an alternative to the Nagel‐Moshinsky construction of the GT basis. Since the corresponding cluster amplitudes, which are also U(nc) ⊗ U(ns) tensors, can be shown to be connected, the irreducible tensor operators of U(nc) ⊗ U(nv) represent a convenient basis for a spin‐adapted full coupled cluster calculation for closed‐shell systems. For a high‐spin reference determinant with n, singly occupied open‐shell orbitals, the corresponding representation of U(n), n=nc + nv + ns is not simply reducible under the group U(nc) ⊗ U(ns) ⊗ U(nv). The multiplicity problem is resolved using the group chain U(n) ⊃ U(nc + nv) ⊗ U(ns) ⊃ U(nc) ⊗U(ns)⊗ U(nv) ⊗ U(nv). The labeling of the resulting configuration‐state functions (which, in general, are not GT states when nc > 1) by the irreducible representations of the intermediate group U(nc + nv) ⊗U(ns) turns out to be equivalent to the classification based on the order of interaction with the reference state. The irreducible tensor operators defined by the above chain and corresponding to single, double, and triple substitutions from the first‐, second‐, and third‐order interacting spaces are explicitly constructed from the U(n) generators. The connectedness of the corresponding cluster amplitudes and, consequently, the size extensivity of the resulting spin‐adapted open‐shell coupled cluster theory are proved using group theoretical arguments. The perturbation expansion of the resulting coupled cluster equations leads to an explicitly connected form of the spin‐restricted open‐shell many‐body perturbation theory. Approximation schemes leading to manageable computational procedures are proposed and their relation to perturbation theory is discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Systematic nonperturbative approach for thermal averages in quantum many-body systems: The thermal-cluster-cumulant method

Goutam Sanyal, Seikh Hannan Mandal, S. Guha +1 more

We present in this paper a systematic nonperturbative cluster-cumulant method for deriving thermal averages of operators in quantum many-body systems. The method combines the advantages of the cumulant expansion scheme of thermodynamic perturbation theory, the approach of thermofield dynamics as a finite-temperature field theory, and the time-dependent coupled-cluster theory extended to ``imaginary time.'' We have generalized the concepts of cumulants in a nonperturbative manner and have posited on the statistical operator an exponential-like ansatz containing connected, size-extensive operators in the exponent. These latter cumulantlike operators have been termed ``cluster cumulants'' by us. For a compact treatment, we have derived an alternative thermal field theory in which a time-ordered product is expanded in terms of ``thermal normal products'' of operators and thermal contractions---leading to a ``thermal Wick's theorem.'' The thermal normal products are the finite-temperature analogs of the ordinary normal products and have zero thermal averages. Operators in these products commute (anticommute) under permutations for bosons (fermions). This thermal representation is shown to be unitarily related to the traditional thermofield dynamics formulation, but has the advantage of using only the physical variables. The imaginary-time evolution of the statistical operator is treated by our recently formulated time-dependent cluster-cumulant theory. The partition function is evaluated as an exponential of a connected quantity. As an illustrative example, we have computed the partition function of an anharmonic oscillator with equally weighted cubic and quartic perturbation for a wide range of coupling, extending to the strongly nonperturbative regime. We study the behavior of free energy in the low-temperature limit and verify numerically the validity of the Kohn-Luttinger theorem [Phys. Rev. 118, 41 (1960)] for this system. We also show that our formalism is a natural nonperturbative analog of the thermodynamic perturbative theory by showing that a perturbative solution of the thermal-cluster-cumulant equations generates a variation of the Bloch--Balian--de Dominicis theory.

Matrix‐covariant representation of high‐order configuration interaction and coupled cluster theories

Anatoliy V. Luzanov

Abstract We present the closed form of the reduced density matrices (RDMs) of arbitrary order for configuration interaction (CI) wave functions at any excitation level, up to the full CI. A special operator technique due to Bogoliubov is applied and extended. It focuses on constructions of matrix‐covariant expressions independent of the basis set used. The corresponding variational CI equations are given in an explicit form containing the matrices related to conventional excitation operators. A subsequent transformation of the latter to an irreducible form makes it possible to generate the matrix‐covariant representation for coupled cluster (CC) models. Here this transformation is performed for a simplified high‐order CC scheme somewhat reminiscent of the quadratic CI model. A generalized spin‐flip approximation closely related to high‐order CI and CC models is presented, stressing on a possible inclusion of nondynamical and dynamical correlation effects for multiple bond breaking. A derivation of the full CI and simple CC models for systems involving effective three‐electron interactions is also given, thereby demonstrating the capability of the proposed method to deal with complicated many‐body problem. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Self‐energy operator and self‐energy fields in many‐body systems: Liouvillian approach

Roberto C. Bochicchio, Horacio Grinberg

Abstract An explicit definition for the self‐energy field operator and the self‐energy fields obtained from an average of the associated operator within the algebraic formalism of superoperators is presented. It stems from the formal expansion of the many‐body propagator equations of motion hierachy in quantum many‐body systems within the scenario of the Liouvillian decoupling scheme developed in previous works. An essential theoretical property of such fields for the complete expansion of the propagator to any order in the interaction potential is shown. This states that the interaction potential to a given order only depends on one q‐reduced density matrix. The contraction order q of the density matrix depends on both the nature of the operators defining the propagator and the actual order of the expansion. This result is rigorous regarding infinite summation of the irreducible terms of the self‐energy fields and provides a direct way to estimate the extent to which many‐body effects are involved in successive approximations, i.e., truncation of the excitation level given by the reference state throughout the reduced density matrix and the expansion of the propagator. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Finite-order method to calculate approximate density matrices in the Fock-space multireference coupled cluster theory

Alexander V. Oleynichenko, Andrei V. Zaitsevskii, Leonid V. Skripnikov +1 more

An efficient approach to calculate approximate pure-state and transition reduced density matrices in the framework of the multireference relativistic Fock-space coupled cluster (FS CC) theory is proposed. The method is based on the effective operator formalism and consists of the direct substitution of the FS CC Ansatz for a wave operator into the effective operator expression with the subsequent truncation of expansion at the terms quadratic in cluster amplitudes. The final density matrix is defined by active-space density matrices of different ranks ‘dressed’ with contributions from cluster operators. The method gives a connected expression for pure-state density matrices, provided that the intermediate normalisation condition is fulfilled. Moreover, under some additional assumptions, the connectivity can also be ensured for calculated transition property matrix elements and natural transition spinors. The developed technique allows for fast and accurate calculations of one-particle reduced density matrices for a wide range of electronic states. A pilot application of the new technique to construct averaged atomic natural orbital (ANO) basis sets for fully relativistic electronic structure calculations is presented.

Theory of Strongly Coupled Many-Fermion Systems. I. Convergence of Linked-Cluster Expansions

Leon N. Cooper

A strongly coupled system---the limiting case of a highly degenerate many-fermion system for which the variation of the kinetic energy is neglected, and the interaction restricted to a region of momentum space neighboring the Fermi surface---has been analyzed in a manner not dependent upon assumptions about the convergence of power series expansions or on partial summations of infinite series. The vacuum expectation value of the resolvent operator, ${〈\frac{1}{(H\ensuremath{-}z)}〉}_{0}$, is expressed as the Laplace transform of the exponential of a function linearly dependent on the volume of the system. It is shown that the linked-cluster expansion of the vacuum expectation value of the resolvent operator has a zero radius of convergence as a power series in the coupling constant. The most serious physical consequence of this is that a nontrivial interaction never results in a "normal" system.
