Abstract

We extend our previous discussion of the resonant nonlinear Faraday effect in terms of the precession of an induced quadrupole moment to the realistic experimental situations where depopulation, repopulation, and hyperfine optical pumping contribute. We derive, to lowest order in the light intensity, an analytical expression for the magnetorotation angle near an electric-dipole resonance in an atomic medium of arbitrary spins. We find excellent quantitative agreement with absolute measurements performed on the Cs ${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ line.

Quantitative interpretation of the nonlinear Faraday effect as a Hanle effect of a light-induced birefringence

Antoine Weis, S. I. Kanorsky, James Wurster

We present a simple quantitative description of the lowest-order nonlinear Faraday effect of an atomic vapor by modeling the effect as a Hanle-type precession of the quadrupole moment induced by optical pumping. This gives the medium the symmetry of uniaxial birefringence, and the Faraday rotation is expressed in terms of this birefringence. We obtain expressions for transitions between states of arbitrary angular momenta; the new expressions match results obtained earlier for the case of depopulation pumping. The novel aspects are that only level populations intervene and that no explicit use of sublevel coherences is made. We present experimental verifications of the equivalence of light-induced birefringence and the nonlinear Faraday effect.

Quantitative study of optical pumping in the presence of spin-exchange relaxation

Yongqi Shi, Theo Scholtes, Z. D. Grujić +3 more

We have performed quantitative measurements of the variation of the on-resonance absorption coefficients ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{0}$ of the four hyperfine components of the Cs ${D}_{1}$ transition as a function of laser power $P$, for pumping with linearly and with circularly polarized light. Sublevel populations derived from rate equations assuming isotropic population relaxation (at a rate ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{1}$) yield algebraic ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{0}(P)$ dependences that do not reproduce the experimental findings from Cs vapor in a paraffin-coated cell. However, numerical results that consider spin-exchange relaxation (at a rate ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{se}}$) and isotropic relaxation fit the experimental data perfectly well. The fit parameters, viz., the absolute value of ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{0}$, the optical pumping saturation power ${P}_{\mathrm{sat}}$, and the ratio ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{se}}/{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{1}$, are well described by the experimental conditions and yield absolute values for ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{se}}$. The latter is consistent with the previously published Cs-Cs spin-exchange relaxation cross section.

Nonlinear resonant polarization rotation under conditions of coherent population trapping

Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, I. V. Zelensky

Nonlinear resonant optical rotation was studied over a wide range of experimental parameters at the Rb D 1 F = 2→ F ′ = 1 transition in the 87 Rb vapor under conditions of coherent population trapping. The angle of rotation was found to depend nonmonotonically on the laser intensity and applied magnetic field. The effect of optical pumping out to the level F = 1 is discussed. It is demonstrated experimentally that the Faraday rotation angle increases twofold upon the compensation for pumping.

Light-induced polarization effects in atoms with partially resolved hyperfine structure and applications to absorption, fluorescence, and nonlinear magneto-optical rotation

Marcis P. Auzinsh, Dmitry Budker, Simon Rochester

The creation and detection of atomic polarization is examined theoretically through the study of basic optical-pumping mechanisms and absorption and fluorescence measurements and the dependence of these processes on the size of ground- and excited-state hyperfine splittings is determined. The consequences of this dependence are studied in more detail for the case of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the Faraday geometry (an effect requiring the creation and detection of rank-two polarization in the ground state) with alkali-metal atoms. Analytic formulas for the optical rotation signal under various experimental conditions are presented.

Nonlinear effects in optical pumping of a cold and slow atomic beam

N. Porfido, Nikolai N. Bezuglov, Martins Bruvelis +12 more

By photoionizing hyperfine (HF) levels of the Cs state $6{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ in a slow and cold atom beam, we find how their population depends on the excitation laser power. The long time (around $180\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s})$ spent by the slow atoms inside the resonant laser beam is large enough to enable exploration of a unique atom-light interaction regime heavily affected by time-dependent optical pumping. We demonstrate that, under such conditions, the onset of nonlinear effects in the population dynamics and optical pumping occurs at excitation laser intensities much smaller than the conventional respective saturation values. The evolution of population within the HF structure is calculated by numerical integration of the multilevel optical Bloch equations. The agreement between numerical results and experiment outcomes is excellent. All main features in the experimental findings are explained by the occurrence of ``dark'' and ``bright'' resonances leading to power-dependent branching coefficients.

Theory of Faraday rotation produced by atoms near a Jg= 1/2 to Je= 1/2 transition

F Schuller, Derek N. Stacey, Richard B. Warrington +1 more

An analytical expression is derived for the Faraday rotation occurring in a dilute atomic vapour for monochromatic light of any intensity tuned near an absorption transition between two levels, each with total angular momentum J= 1/2 . Collisional effects are included within the framework of the impact approximation. The result is discussed in terms of simple physical mechanisms; it is shown that optical pumping effects play an important role.
