Nonlinear resonant polarization rotation under conditions of coherent population trapping

Abstract

Nonlinear resonant optical rotation was studied over a wide range of experimental parameters at the Rb D 1 F = 2→ F ′ = 1 transition in the 87 Rb vapor under conditions of coherent population trapping. The angle of rotation was found to depend nonmonotonically on the laser intensity and applied magnetic field. The effect of optical pumping out to the level F = 1 is discussed. It is demonstrated experimentally that the Faraday rotation angle increases twofold upon the compensation for pumping.

Influence of transverse magnetic fields and depletion of working levels on the nonlinear resonance Faraday effect

Petr M. Anisimov, Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, I. V. Zelensky +1 more

The nonlinear resonance Faraday effect is studied under the condition of coherent population trapping in 87 Rb vapor at the D 1 -line F =2→ F ′=1 transition. The influence of transverse magnetic fields on the nonlinear optical Faraday rotation is studied. For the transverse fields perpendicular to the electromagnetic-wave polarization, a simple theoretical model is proposed, which is in good agreement with experimental data. The optimal intensity providing the maximum sensitivity is found based on the results obtained. The influence of working-level depletion on the parameters of Faraday rotation in open systems is studied experimentally and theoretically. The system was closed in the experiment by using an additional laser to increase the sensitivity and extend the dynamic range of measured fields. The importance of compensating for the depletion in the presence of spurious magnetic fields is shown; in particular, the sensitivity was enhanced by a factor of 50 in experiments with a buffer gas.

Nonlinear magneto-optic polarization rotation with intense laser fields

Paul S. Hsu, Anil K. Patnaik, George R. Welch

We have studied the nonlinear Faraday effect of intense linear polarized light in an optically thick atomic rubidium vapor. We have shown that the polarization rotatation rate (rotation angle per unit magnetic field, in the limit of low field) reaches a saturation value as the intensity and density are increased.

Nonlinear magneto-optic polarization rotation with intense laser fields

We have studied the nonlinear Faraday effect with intense linear polarized light in an optically thick atomic rubidium vapor. We demonstrate that the polarization rotation rate (rotation angle per unit magnetic field, in the limit of low field) has a maximum value as the intensity and density are increased. We also show that the optimal sensitivity of an optical magnetometer based on this system reaches a saturation value as the intensity and density are increased.

Large polarization rotation via atomic coherence

Irina V. Novikova, Andrey B. Matsko, George R. Welch

We report significant enhancement of the nonlinear Faraday rotation in optically thick Rb vapor. Polarization rotation angles as large as 10 rad were observed for what is believed to be the first time for sub-Gauss magnetic fields. The use of this effect for high-precision magnetometry is also discussed.

Nonlinear magneto-optic and self-polarization rotation by superposition of states

Swarupananda Pradhan, A. Kani, Harshawardhan Wanare +2 more

We report the observation of enhanced magneto-optic rotation as the coherent superposition of different hyperfine states is established in an atomic sample. The polarization rotation near the two-photon Raman resonance condition appears to have an analogous characteristic to the well established Faraday rotation observed in the vicinity of a single-photon resonance; however, it contains sharp features arising from coherent population trapping states. The profile of the two-photon rotation signal exhibits interesting features for a slightly imbalanced circular polarization component of the laser field as well as for on and away from the single-photon resonance. The investigation can be used to explore the effect of superposition states generated by coherent population trapping on optical activity. A complete density matrix based numerical simulation that consistently captures all the relevant features of the experiment is presented. The experimental and theoretical investigation can be useful for magnetometry using polarization rotation near two-photon Raman resonance.

We present an experimental and theoretical study of self-rotation of optical polarization in a rubidium vapor. The atomic vapor is placed in a magnetic shielding cavity to suppress the Faraday rotation effect. In our experiment, Doppler-free spectroscopy configuration is used, and F = 2 → F = 3 transition of 87 Rb D2 line is chosen. We observe self-rotation of optical polarization effect at different pump light ellipticities.A theoretical analysis is then provided based on the experimental conditions.Theoretical simulation and experimental results are in good agreement.
