Abstract

The results of theoretical and numerical analysis of resonances of coherent population trapping in 87 Rb atomic vapors, obtained using copropagated linearly polarized waves, are presented. Various schemes for exciting dark resonance are compared with a view to obtaining a new-generation small-size quantum frequency standard.

A new method of dark resonance excitation on D2 line in 87Rb vapor

Georgy A. Kazakov, B. G. Matisov, J. Delporte +1 more

A new method based on optical pumping is proposed for increasing the parameters of dark resonance excitation on D 2 line in 87 Rb vapor. The pumping is provided by linearly polarized two-frequency laser radiation propagating in the direction perpendicular to the probing field directed along the cell with atomic rubidium vapor. This method significantly improves the dark resonance parameters as compared to the case of pumping by a circularly polarized field. Qualitative considerations are confirmed by the results of numerical calculations.

On the unique possibility of significantly increasing the contrast of dark resonances on the D1 line of 87Rb

We propose and study, theoretically and experimentally, a new scheme of excitation of a coherent population trapping resonance for the D1 line of alkali atoms with nuclear spin I = 3/2 by bichromatic linearly polarized light (lin‖lin field) under the conditions of spectral resolution of the excited state. The unique properties of this scheme result in a high contrast of dark resonance for the D1 line of 87 Rb.

High-Contrast Dark Resonance on the D2 - Line of 87Rb in a Vapor Cell with Different Directions of the Pump - Probe Waves

Georgy A. Kazakov, I. E. Mazets, Rozhdestvensky, Y +3 more

We propose a novel method enabling to create a high-contrast dark resonance in the 87Rb vapor D2-line. The method is based on an optical pumping of atoms into the working states by a two-frequency, linearly-polarized laser radiation propagating perpendicularly to the probe field. This new scheme is compared to the traditional scheme involving the circularly-polarized probe beam only, and significant improvement of the dark resonance parameters is found. Qualitative considerations are confirmed by numerical calculations.

Experimental Investigation of the Dark Pseudoresonance on the D1 Line of the [sup 87]Rb Atom Excited by a Linearly Polarized Field

Sergei A. Zibrov

The measurements of the metrological characteristics (amplitude, width, and shift in the magnetic field) of the dark pseudoresonance, which was proposed by Kazakov et al. [quant-ph/0506167] as the reference resonance for an atomic frequency standard, are reported. It has been shown that the characteristics of the pseudoresonance are worse than those of the unsplit electromagnetically induced transparency resonance for the excitation scheme with the lin‖lin polarization on the D1 line of the 87Rb atom.

Coherent-population-trapping resonances with linearly polarized light for all-optical miniature atomic clocks

We present a joint theoretical and experimental characterization of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance excited on the ${D}_{1}$ line of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms by bichromatic linearly polarized laser light. We observe high-contrast transmission resonances (up to $\ensuremath{\approx}25%$), which makes this excitation scheme promising for miniature all-optical atomic clock applications. We also demonstrate cancellation of the first-order light shift by proper choice of the frequencies and relative intensities of the two laser-field components. Our theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.
