Abstract

Coherent-population-trapping resonances within the degenerate two-level system of the F=2-->F′=1 transition of the 87Rb D1 line were investigated in an uncoated Rb vapor cell by means of level-crossing-type experiments. Tuning over the two-photon resonance is achieved sweeping a magnetic field around zero value. The influence of transverse magnetic fields on the amplitude and the width of the resonances, recorded in fluorescence and absorption, were investigated in the cases of excitation with linear, circular, and elliptical laser light polarization. A theoretical analysis was performed for the case of linearly polarized excitation, the results of which are in good agreement with the experiment.

Coherent population trapping resonance on degenerate two-level system for magnetic field measurement

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances on the degenerate two-level system of the (Fg=2→Fe=1) transition of the 87Rb D1 line were investigated in an uncoated vacuum cell by means of level-crossing type experiments-sweeping a magnetic field around zero value and using a single laser beam. The two-photon resonance manifests itself as fluorescence canceling when the system of levels is degenerate (at zero point of magnetic field). The influence of weak transverse magnetic fields on the amplitude and width of the resonance was investigated. The CPT resonances were observed with linear, circular and elliptical polarized laser light. Transverse magnetic field widens the resonances obtained by linear and circular polarization but splits the resonance created by slightly elliptically polarized laser light. The dependence of this splitting on the elliptical ratio and experimental geometry were investigated. Due to its narrow width and sensitivity to low magnetic fields (< 1 G) this resonance is very promising for small magnetic field measurement.

Level-crossing absorption with narrow spectral width in Rb vapor with buffer gas

Ye-Jin Yu, Hyun Joon Lee, In‐Ho Bae +2 more

We present the transformation in the Hanle configuration of the transmission that results from coherent population trapping (CPT) into the level-crossing absorption (LCA) that results from the single-photon optical pumping in the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ${D}_{1}$ line of a Rb vapor cell with a Ne buffer gas when the polarization of the laser field is changed from linear to circular. The LCA spectrum, with a narrow spectral width of $2.4$ mG ($1.7$ kHz), was observed in the ${F}_{g}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{e}\ensuremath{\leqslant}{F}_{g}$ transition with the circularly polarized laser. This may be because the LCA is both related to the transverse magnetic field and the atom-laser interaction time resulting from diffusive atomic motion in the cell with the buffer gas. The CPT and LCA spectra were calculated numerically using the full density matrix equations for the relevant magnetic sublevels of the hyperfine levels, considering the residual magnetic fields perpendicular to laser propagation and the collision effects resulting from the buffer gas. There was good qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results.

Magnetic field influence on coherent resonance in a degenerate two-level system

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova +2 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances in the degenerate two-level system of the Fg = 2 → Fe = 1) transition of the 87Rb D1 line were investigated in an uncoated vacuum cell by means of Hanle effect configuration. CPT signals with complex shape (narrow resonance approximately 2 mG superimposed on the wide one approximately 150 mG) were observed. The influence of weak transverse magnetic fields (0-1.2 G) on the amplitude and width of the two components was measured. The observed narrow resonances are interesting for application in high resolution spectroscopy and magnetometry.

Narrow structure in the coherent population trapping resonance in rubidium

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova +1 more

An investigation is reported of coherent resonance in the degenerate two-level system of the (Fg = 2 --> Fe = 1) transition of the 87Rb D1 line by means of a Hanle effect configuration. In a coherent population trapping experiment, a very narrow (approximately 1-kHz) resonance superimposed upon a broader resonance (approximately 100 kHz) was observed. The dependence of the width and the amplitude of the coherent resonance on the laser power density, on additional constant magnetic fields, on the laser frequency position along the fluorescence profile, and on Rb cells with different dimensions was investigated.

Coherent effects on the Zeeman sublevels of hyperfine states at the D1and D2lines of Rb

G. Alzetta, S. Cartaleva, Yordanka V. Dancheva +4 more

Subnatural-width resonances due to coherent effects in optical pumping at hyperfine (hf) transitions of Rb are investigated using a linearly or circularly polarized single-frequency diode laser beam. The sign and amplitude of the resonances in the fluorescence are measured by scanning the laser frequency over the hf transitions of the Rb D 1 and D 2 lines. The fluorescence perpendicular to the laser beam is detected as a function of magnetic field parallel to the beam propagation and scanned around zero value. In the case of linear polarization of the field, dark resonances are observed for hf transitions with F g → F e = F g -1 and F g → F e = F g , and bright resonances are observed for transitions with F g → F e = F g + 1. This is in agreement with the recently developed theories. For all (except F g = 2→ F e = 3, 85 Rb, D 1 line) hf transitions the sign of the resonances reverses when the polarization of the field changes to circular. The amplitudes of the resonances correspond to the probability of the hf transitions and to the calculated loss rate of the population to the ground hf level not excited by the laser field. The observed narrow resonances (FWHM: few tens of kHz) and their sensitivity to weak magnetic fields are interesting for high-resolution spectroscopy and for development of simple and precise magnetometers.

Potential of the Single-Frequency CPT Resonances for Magnetic Field Measurement

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances on degenerate two-level system of D/sub 1/ line of /sup 87/Rb were investigated with single-frequency laser excitation in Hanle configuration. Their sensitivity to stray magnetic fields was examined for linear, elliptical, and circular laser polarization. A methodology for magnetic field (MF) measurement using the CPT resonance is proposed. The sensitivity of the system to weak magnetic fields was evaluated and a magnetic field of 3 nT was unambiguously detected.
