Isolated optical Ramsey fringes in the 32S–42D two-photon transitions of sodium

Abstract

By inducing a 90° phase shift between pairs of coherent time-delayed laser pulses, and taking the difference between the fluorescence resulting from pairs of coherent pulses with and without the phase shift, we have eliminated the diffraction background and isolated the Ramsey’s interference fringes in the profile of Doppler-free two-photon resonances. This technique also offers enormous improvement for other situations in which interference fringe contrast is poor.

Observation of Ramsey's Interference Fringes in the Profile of Doppler-Free Two-Photon Resonances

M. M. Salour, Claude N. Cohen-Tannoudji

Using two coherent time-delayed short pulses, we have demonstrated that one can obtain, in the profile of Doppler-free two-photon resonances, interference fringes with a splitting $\frac{1}{2T}$ ($T$, delay time between the two pulses) much smaller than the spectral width $\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ of each pulse ($\ensuremath{\tau}$ duration of each pulse). This method should lead to a number of important improvements in the presently available techniques of ultrahigh-resolution laser spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Coherent Two-Photon Excitation by Multiple Light Pulses

Richard E. Teets, J. N. Eckstein, Theodor W. Hänsch

We have studied Doppler-free two-photon excitation of atoms with a train of phase-coherent standing-wave light pulses, originating from the same laser pulse. Quantum interference effects produce narrow spectral fringes which have a physical origin similar to that of Ramsey fringes. Linewidths much less than the Fourier-transform limit of an individual light pulse have been observed for the sodium $3S\ensuremath{-}5S$ transition; and a dramatic enhancement of the resonant signal is possible.

Quantum interference effects in two-photon spectroscopy

M. M. Salour

Interaction of atoms with two intense coherent time-delayed short pulsed standing waves produces quantum interference effects in the atomic fluorescence. This type of quantum interference effect applied to Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy (an extension of the Ramsey method of separated r.f. or microwave fields in atomic beam experiments) offers a number of important improvements in the presently available techniques of ultra-high-resolution spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, and crystals.

Resonance fringes in the two-photon absorption with a Doppler shift

Ming Chiang Li

The two-photon absorption initiated by two coherent beams is considered. It is shown that the resonance fringe variation, which appeared in the Doppler-free two-photon absorption of pulsed laser beams, can also be observed in absorption with a Doppler shift.

Separated-beam experiments and transit-time broadening

Ming Chiang Li

Separated-beam experiments for both the Doppler-free two-photon and saturated absorptions are under consideration. In the Doppler-free two-photon absorption, the experimental arrangement is important. Such important has not been recognized before. Three different arrangements are discussed here. In the first one, the separated-beam experiment is not coherent and the Ramsey fringe variation cannot be observed. In the second, the transit-time broadening is present and the Ramsey fringe variation depends on the atom's time of flight as well as the transit time. Finally, in the third arrangement, the transit-time broadening is eliminated and the Ramsey fringe variation depends on the atom's time of flight alone. These examples have shown that in the Doppler-free two-photon absorption, the elimination of the transit-time broadening is through a mechanism other than the beam separation. In the saturated absorption the situation is quite different. Even in the presence of transit-time broadening, the Ramsey fringe spacing depends only on the atom's time of flight.

Ramsey Spectroscopy and Geometric Operations on Sodium Bose–Einstein Condensates Using Two-Photon Stimulated Raman Transitions

Hiromitsu Imai, Atsuo Morinaga

Ramsey spectroscopy and geometric operations on the released sodium Bose–Einstein condensates consisting of 10 7 atoms were demonstrated using copropagating two-photon stimulated Raman pulses, which were resonant to the clock transition between the F =1, m F =0 and F =2, m F =0 states of sodium atoms. The Ramsey fringes with a visibility close to 1 were obtained for two Raman pulses separated by 10 ms. A relative frequency resolution of Ramsey resonance was 6×10 -10 and a phase uncertainty of fringes was 0.06 rad for single measurement. Using resonant laser-controlled Raman pulses, geometric operations for rotations of the two-level Bose–Einstein condensates around axes 2 and 3 on the Bloch sphere were also demonstrated with a relative phase uncertainty of 4%.

Using two coherent time-delayed short pulses, we have demonstrated that one can obtain, in the profile of Doppler-free two-photon resonances, interference fringes with a splitting 12T\frac{1}{2T}2T1 (TTT, delay time between the two pulses) much smaller than the spectral width $\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ of each pulse ($\ensuremath{\tau}$ duration of each pulse).
