Beats in Dicke superradiant emission

Abstract

A quantum theory appropriate to describe the cooperative decay of an ensemble of sources having different resonance frequencies is applied to the superradiant emission of two equally populated groups of detuned sources. A set of two coupled equations is derived, which fully describe the behaviour of this system. Analytical or numerical solutions of these equations are presented as a function of the detuning and the differences between the quantum and the semiclassical behaviour are discussed.

SUPERRADIANT BEATS IN A SIMPLE SYSTEM

PENG JIN-SHENG, 华中师范学院物理系

In this paper, the superradiant beats of cooperative decay for a simple system of two detuned sources is systematically investigated. The superradiant beat characterics of modulation in the emitted intensity by the detuning are obtained through numerical solutions of equations describing the time-dependence of this system.

Solving Dicke superradiance analytically: A compendium of methods

R. Holzinger, Nico S. Bassler, Julian Lyne +3 more

We present several analytical approaches to the Dicke superradiance problem, which involves determining the time evolution of the density operator for an initially inverted ensemble of $N$ identical two-level systems undergoing collective spontaneous emission. This serves as one of the simplest cases of open quantum system dynamics that allows for a fully analytical solution. We explore multiple methods to tackle this problem, yielding a solution valid for any time and any number of spins. These approaches range from solving coupled rate equations and identifying exceptional points in non-Hermitian evolution to employing combinatorial and probabilistic techniques, as well as utilizing a quantum jump unraveling of the master equation. The analytical solution is expressed as a residue sum obtained from a contour integral in the complex plane, suggesting the possibility of fully analytical solutions for a broader class of open quantum system dynamics problems.

Theory of cooperative spontaneous emission

Anatolii V Andreev

An analysis is made of the deexcitation kinetics of strongly excited extended systems of initially uncorrelated two-level radiators. The possibility of partially cooperative states of the system is predicted when the radiation intensity acquires values intermediate between the spontaneous decay intensity and the Dicke superradiance intensity. The conditions for the onset of cooperative processes are obtained. The threshold for the oscillatory emission conditions is determined and the oscillation frequency is found. Modulation of the emission intensity is predicted with different modulation frequencies before and after the superradiant pulse. The modulation frequencies are determined. Formulas are derived for the superradiant pulse delay times and intensities. The possibility of weakly anisotropic cooperative emission is predicted.

A Mini-Review: Cooperative Spontaneous Emission from Two- and Three-Level Atoms

Munkh-Uchral Bazarsan, Mend-Amar Lutsukh, Tuguldur Begzjav +1 more

In Dicke superradiance, N identical two-level atoms in a small volume share one collective excitation ladder, and the ensemble discharges in a delayed burst whose peak grows in accordance with N2 rather than N. Real emitters, however, usually have more than two levels. When such an ensemble radiates cooperatively, its multiple decay channels interact rather than simply add up. This mini-review covers recent work that solves this interaction exactly for three-level atoms. We first recall the two-level benchmark: its exact delay statistics, their Gumbel-distributed fluctuation, and the resulting 21.7% deficit of the ensemble-averaged peak below the semi-classical estimate. The master-equation framework developed by Agarwal and Cho, Kurnit and Gilmore, on which the three-level results rest, comes next. The main part surveys three published papers, one for each of the three dipole-allowed three-level configurations. In the cascade, two emission pulses are correlated through an inherited timing. In the shared-source configuration, two channels compete for one atomic reservoir; for equal rates, as shown by Holzinger et al., this competition produces an exactly uniform terminal distribution, as in a Pólya urn. In the shared-sink configuration, two dynamically independent groups of atoms merge exactly into a single collective burst of the combined ensemble. We call this superradiant synthesis.

Collective decay of interacting bosons

Bennet Windt, Lorenzo Rossi, Alexander V. Poshakinskiy +2 more

We study a bosonic analog of the paradigmatic Dicke model of superradiance, comprising interacting bosonic modes subject to fully symmetric collective decay. Depending on the interaction strength, we uncover qualitatively distinct regimes of emission. For strong interactions, the emission closely resembles Dicke superradiance, with perturbative corrections arising from the presence of additional levels. For weaker interactions, the bosonic statistics qualitatively changes the dynamics, leading to a crossover to subradiant emission. Remarkably, we show that the dynamics in this regime can be described by rate equations analogous to those of the Dicke model despite the large accessible bosonic Hilbert space. Our findings are based on a combination of analytical arguments and large-scale numerics enabled by the permutational symmetry of the problem and may be probed in circuit QED experiments.
