Nonlinearly chirped quasi-phase-matching for production of ultra-broadband twin photons

Abstract

We study spontaneous parametric down-conversion generating ultra-broadband biphotons in spatially chirped photoniclike crystals. The novelty is that these structures are considered as definite assembles of second-order layers with both linear and nonlinear chirping. It is shown that the biphoton spectra for two structures with linear and nonlinear chirps under consideration are essentially different in form.

Chirped quasi-phase-matching with Gauss sums for production of biphotons

D A Antonosyan, A R Tamazyan, G Y Kryuchkyan

We study the theory of linearly chirped biphoton wave-packets produced in two basic quasi-phase-matching configurations: chirped photonic-like crystals and aperiodically poled crystals. The novelty is that these structures are considered as definite assembles of nonlinear layers that leads to detailed description of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes through the discrete Gauss sums. We demonstrate that biphoton spectra for chirped photonic crystals involving a small number of layers consist from definite well-resolved spectral lines. We also discuss the forming of broadband spectra of signal (idler) waves in SPDC for both configurations as number of layers increases as well as in dependence of chirping parameters .

Intense ultra-broadband down-conversion from randomly poled nonlinear crystals

Jiŕí Svozilík, Jan Peřina

Stochastic quasi-phase-matching of the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion is analyzed. It is shown that spectral, temporal and spatial properties of photon pairs generated in randomly poled crystals are similar to those generated in chirped periodically-poled crystals. Especially, randomly poled crystals are capable to emit photon pairs with ultra-broad spectra.

Chirped Biphotons Using Quasi Phase Matching

Steven Sensarn, Stephen E. Harris

We describe techniques for numerically simulating broadband, time-energy entangled biphoton generation by spontaneous parametric down conversion in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals. Typical domain errors have negligible effect on the phase spectrum of the biphoton wavefunction.

Temporal compression and shaping of chirped biphotons using Fresnel-inspired binary phase shaping

Baihong Li, Yonggang Xu, Haifei Zhu +2 more

Chirped biphotons generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in chirped quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals have ultrabroadband frequency spectra, while their correlation times are not ultranarrow, due to the nonlinear frequency dependence of the phase factor. Based on the idea of Fresnel zone lenses, we propose a Fresnel-inspired binary phase-shaping scheme for tailoring broadband biphoton spectra. By applying binary phase masks to the biphoton spectrum, a Fresnel zone lens was produced in the frequency domain, compressing the broadband temporal wave packets of the chirped biphotons to the Fourier-transform limit due to the effective removal of the quadratic phase. Furthermore, biphoton correlation trains can also be generated by properly shaping the biphoton spectrum with this scheme. This provides a method for biphoton compression and shaping, which avoids the length dependence and the impact of higher-order dispersion in a dispersive medium by using the phase compensation method. Our results could prove useful in quantum metrology, lithography, and coding of entangled photons.

Ultrabroadband Biphotons Generated via Chirped Quasi-Phase-Matched Optical Parametric Down-Conversion

Magued B. Nasr, Silvia Carrasco, Bahaa E. A. Saleh +6 more

We generate ultrabroadband biphotons via the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear gratings that have a linearly chirped wave vector. By using these ultrabroadband biphotons (300-nm bandwidth), we measure the narrowest Hong-Ou-Mandel dip to date, having a full width at half maximum of 7.1 fs. This enables the generation of a high flux of nonoverlapping biphotons with ultrabroad bandwidth, thereby promoting the use of SPDC light in many nonclassical applications.

Planar waveguide structures for production of modally entangled biphotons with spectrum broadening

A. R. Tamazyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We study the generation of biphoton modally entangled states in such waveguide structures that lead to spectrum broadening. The process of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) has been considered for the biphoton generation. The main subject of our study is the dependence of the biphoton spectra on the structure spatial characteristics. The representation of the core structures as definite assembles of nonlinear layers allows us to find analytical description for biphoton spectrum. We show that chirped biphotons with discrete as well as continuous spectra can be generated depending on the waveguide structure. The conditions for spectrum discretization are obtained analytically. It is shown that the biphoton entangled states can be controlled by varying the parameters of the waveguide structure.
