Constrained variational approach to second order phase transitions: application to a two-layer Ising film

Abstract

Within the framework of the transfer matrix formalism, a variational method is elaborated with a constraint related to the fundamental role of the correlation length near a critical point. The method is applied to a two-layer ferromagnetic film, made of two horizontal Ising planes interacting through a vertical coupling. The critical curve of the model, as well as the correlation length above and near T c are calculated. The critical exponent nu obtained agrees with the expected two-dimensional exact value. For the two particular values of the vertical coupling, for which there are numerical estimates of T c through series analysis or the Monte Carlo method, an essential agreement with these estimates is found. Analytical expressions are given in the weak and strong vertical coupling regimes.

Alternative formulation of the variational method for systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom: application to Ising models

M Villani

For systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom, the Rayleigh-Ritz quotient of the standard variational method is analysed from an alternative point of view. Its numerator and denominator are treated as statistical models having the same correlation length. The approach is developed in the framework of the transfer matrix formalism and applied to Ising models. It allows the author to obtain exactly the correlation length along a row or column of the anisotropic square Ising model, for T>or=T c . Approximate applications of the method to the two-layer square and 3D simple cubic Ising models are also given. In these cases quite reliable critical curves are obtained through an essentially analytical procedure.

CONSTRUCTING THE CRITICAL CURVE FOR A SYMMETRIC TWO-LAYER ISING MODEL

Mehrdad Ghaemi, Behrouz Mirza, Gholamabbas Parsafar

A numerical method based on the transfer matrix method is developed to calculate the critical temperature of two-layer Ising ferromagnet with a weak inter-layer coupling. The reduced internal energy per site has been accurately calculated for symmetric ferromagnetic case, with the nearest neighbor coupling K1=K2=K (where K1 and K2 are the nearest neighbor interaction in the first and second layers, respectively) with inter-layer coupling J. The critical temperature as a function of the inter-layer coupling [Formula: see text], is obtained for very weak inter-layer interactions, ξ<0.1. Also a different function is given for the case of the strong inter-layer interactions (ξ>1). The importance of these relations is due to the fact that there is no well tabulated data for the critical points versus J/K. We find the value of the shift exponent ϕ=γ is 1.74 for the system with the same intra-layer interaction and 0.5 for the system with different intra-layer interactions.

Finite-size-scaling estimation of critical exponents in the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Marcelo D. Grynberg, Horacio Ceva

The magnetic critical exponent of the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is estimated by means of the finite-size scaling of the order parameter. For a finite system without ordering field, this magnitude is computed from the two leading eigenvectors of the transfer matrix. The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperatures estimated with this method exhibit a small lattice-size dependence. Moreover, they are in good agreement with those obtained using phenomenological renormalization, and also with analytical approximations. The correlation-length critical exponent is calculated by means of phenomenological renormalization. The results found with these numerical techniques indicate that the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition of the model seems to be continuous, in contradiction with a previous result obtained using the persistence-length criterion, which indicated that the transition is always first order. We found that the phase transition is first order only when the ratio of the next-nearest-neighbor and nearest-neighbor interactions equals one-half.

Calculation of the Critical Temperature for the Anisotropic Two-Layer Ising Model Using the Transfer Matrix Method

Mehrdad Ghaemi, Mohammad Ghannadi, Behrouz Mirza

A new finite-size scaling approach based on the transfer matrix method is developed to calculate the critical temperature of an anisotropic two-layer Ising ferromagnet on strips of r -wide sites of square lattices. The reduced internal energy per site has been accurately calculated for the ferromagnetic case, with the nearest-neighbor couplings K x and K y (where K x and K y are the nearest-neighbor interactions within each layer in the x and y directions, respectively) and with interlayer coupling K z, using different size-limited lattices. The calculated energies for different lattice sizes intersect at various points when plotted versus the reduced temperature. It is found that the location of the intersection point versus the lattice size can be fitted to a power series in terms of the lattice sizes. The power series is used to obtain the critical temperature of the unlimited two-layer lattice. The results obtained are in good agreement with the accurate values reported by others.

Critical properties of XY model on two-layer Villain–ferromagnetic lattice

Wang Yi, R. Quartu, Xiaoyan Liu +2 more

We investigate phase transitions of the XY model on a two-layer square lattice which consists of a Villain plane ( J ) and a ferromagnetic plane ( I ), using Monte Carlo simulations and a histogram method. Depending on the values of interaction parameters ( I , J ), the system presents three phases: namely, a Kosterlitz–Thouless (KT) phase in which the two planes are critical for I predominant over J , a chiral phase in which the two planes have a chiral order for J predominant over I and a new phase in which only the Villain plane has a chiral order and the ferromagnetic plane is paramagnetic with a small value of chirality. We clarify the nature of phase transitions by using a finite size scaling method. We find three different kinds of transitions according to the values of ( I , J ): the KT transition, the Ising transition and an XY -Ising transition with ν = 0.849(3). It turns out that the Ising or XY -Ising transition is associated with the disappearance of the chiral order in the Villain plane.
