Finite-size-scaling estimation of critical exponents in the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Abstract

The magnetic critical exponent of the two-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is estimated by means of the finite-size scaling of the order parameter. For a finite system without ordering field, this magnitude is computed from the two leading eigenvectors of the transfer matrix. The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperatures estimated with this method exhibit a small lattice-size dependence. Moreover, they are in good agreement with those obtained using phenomenological renormalization, and also with analytical approximations. The correlation-length critical exponent is calculated by means of phenomenological renormalization. The results found with these numerical techniques indicate that the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition of the model seems to be continuous, in contradiction with a previous result obtained using the persistence-length criterion, which indicated that the transition is always first order. We found that the phase transition is first order only when the ratio of the next-nearest-neighbor and nearest-neighbor interactions equals one-half.

Finite-lattice calculations for the two-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising model

Gareth O. Williams, Pál Ruján, H. L. Frisch

The two-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied numerically using finite-lattice results. The row-to-row transfer matrix is mapped into a simple one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ quantum Hamiltonian. The leading eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors are calculated numerically for chains of finite lengths. Using a finite-lattice renormalization-group transformation the high- (low-) temperature region is analyzed with the use of the Hamiltonian for the original (dual) model. Although there is no clear evidence for a massless phase, the phase boundaries obtained in this way are a strong indication of the presence of a sinusoidal phase between the paramagnetic and the $〈2〉$ antiphase, in fair agreement with previous analytical results.

Finite-size analysis of a two-dimensional Ising model within a nonextensive approach

Nuno Crokidakis, Diogo O. Soares-Pinto, Mario S. Reis +3 more

In this work we present a thorough analysis of the phase transitions that occur in a ferromagnetic two-dimensional Ising model, with only nearest-neighbors interactions, in the framework of the Tsallis nonextensive statistics. We performed Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices with linear sizes L ranging from 32 up to 512. The statistical weight of the Metropolis algorithm was changed according to the nonextensive statistics. Discontinuities in the m(T) curve are observed for $q\ensuremath{\le}0.5$. However, we have verified only one peak on the energy histograms at the critical temperatures, indicating the occurrence of continuous phase transitions. For the $0.5<q\ensuremath{\le}1.0$ regime, we have found continuous phase transitions between the ordered and the disordered phases, and determined the critical exponents via finite-size scaling. We verified that the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, $\ensuremath{\beta}$, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ depend on the entropic index $q$ in the range $0.5<q\ensuremath{\le}1.0$ in the form $\ensuremath{\alpha}(q)=(10{q}^{2}\ensuremath{-}33q+23)/20$, $\ensuremath{\beta}(q)=(2q\ensuremath{-}1)/8$, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}(q)=({q}^{2}\ensuremath{-}q+7)/4$. On the other hand, the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ does not depend on $q$. This suggests a violation of the scaling relations $2\ensuremath{\beta}+\ensuremath{\gamma}=d\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $\ensuremath{\alpha}+2\ensuremath{\beta}+\ensuremath{\gamma}=2$ and a nonuniversality of the critical exponents along the ferro-paramagnetic frontier.

Antiferromagnetic Triangular Ising Model with Ferromagnetic Next Nearest Neighbor Interactions –Transfer Matrix Method–

Hidetsugu Kitatani, Takehiko Oguchi

An antiferromagnetic triangular Ising model with ferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions is studied by means of a transfer matrix method and a finite size scaling. Using the Roomany-Wyld approximation, it cannot be concluded definitely whether the system has only one critical point or not. By studying decays of the correlation functions of each sublattice, it is found that there is a finite temperature region where the correlation functions of each sublattice show a power law decay, namely, in this region every temperature is a critical temperature. The results by means of the present transfer matrix method are in good agreement with that by Monte Carlo methods, namely, the discrepancy between both results, reported recently, can be got rid of.

Order Parameter and Finite-Size Scaling

Hiroshi Takano, Y. Saito

On the basis of the finite-size scaling of the order parameter, a method to estimate the magnetic critical exponent is proposed. In this method, the magnitude of the order parameter for a finite system is calculated from two eigenvectors of the transfer matrix without ordering field. Applications of this method to the Ising and 3-state Potts models in two dimensions yield results in good agreement with the exact or conjectured values of the magnetic exponent.

Quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional transverse Ising model with second-neighbor interactions

P. R. C. Guimarães, J. A. Plascak, F. C. Sá Barreto +1 more

We apply a finite-size scaling approach to the one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. By using the scaling behavior of the energy gap we are able not only to determine the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition line at zero absolute temperature but also to compute the corresponding critical exponent. A comparison with other approaches is made, and aside for small discrepancies likely to occur at the thermodynamic limit, we believe that the present results are quite close to the unknown exact ones.

Phase diagram and critical exponent ν for the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interaction Ising model

James L. Monroe, Seung‐Yeon Kim

We obtain an approximation of the phase diagram of an Ising model with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions on the square lattice. We use the Fisher zeros of the partition functions of a sequence of finite-sized systems along with various extrapolation methods to obtain phase transition points. In addition, we obtain an approximate value of the correlation length critical exponent nu. Our results are compared to previous results for this system using a wide variety of other approaches.
