Abstract

The physics behind magnetically-induced polarization switching for atoms undergoing a Jlower=1 - Jupper =0 transition in a polarization degenerate cavity is discussed. We present preliminary theoretical results for self-pulsing between a+ and a- modes.

Polarization switching versus optical bistability: Experimental observations for a Jlower=1 to Jupper=0 transition in a Fabry-Perot cavity

Christian G. Parigger, Peter Hannaford, Weston J. Sandle

Experiments on the steady-state, nonlinear behavior of the $^{7}\mathrm{F}_{1}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{7}$${\mathrm{F}}_{0}^{\mathrm{o}}$ 570.68-nm transition of atomic samarium in a laser-driven, near-concentric Fabry-Perot cavity are reported. For zero applied magnetic field, only simple optical bistability, symmetric in both ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{+}$ and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ transmitted polarizations, is observed for a linearly polarized excitation beam. However, for a magnetic field applied parallel to the propagation direction, polarization-sensitive switching appears, with lowest power threshold near the edge of the Doppler-broadened region. Subsidiary measurements of atomic parameters are also given to enable the transition to be experimentally well characterized.

Polarization switching in an anisotropic cavity coherently pumped J=1→J′=0 laser

Carles Serrat, Ramon A. Vilaseca, Germán J. de Valcárcel +1 more

We show that, in an optically pumped resonant $J=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ laser, a gain anisotropy is induced by a linearly polarized coherent pump beam that can be balanced or countered by $x$-$y$ cavity-loss anisotropies, leading to switching between the $x$ and $y$ linearly polarized states of the generated laser field as the laser intensity is increased. This switching is not brought about by selection of the mode with the maximum emission intensity. A domain of bistability between the two linearly polarized states is found, whose width depends on the value of the decay rate of the two photon coherence induced among the sublevels of the $J=1$ level manifold. Differently from the incoherently pumped $J=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ laser, the decay rate for the magnetic dipole in that manifold has no influence on the polarization of the emission.

Magnetically induced polarization switching for the F17 −7 F00 570.68-nm transition of Sm i in a Fabry-Perot cavity

Christian G. Parigger, Peter Hannaford, Weston J. Sandle +1 more

Preliminary results of experimental and theoretical behavior of a ${J}_{\mathrm{lower}=1}$ to ${J}_{\mathrm{upper}=0}$ ${(}^{7}$${\mathrm{F}}_{1}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{7}$${\mathrm{F}}_{0}^{0}$, 570.68 nm in Sm i) transition in a laser-driven optical cavity are reported. Unlike a J=(1/2) to J=(1/2) transition, polarization asymmetry in the switching does not spontaneously appear in the absence of a magnetic field, owing to the effect of Zeeman coherence in the J=1 level. However, with a longitudinal magnetic field, polarization asymmetry in the switching does develop for symmetric driving; we describe this new effect as magnetically induced polarization switching.

Controlling Steady-State and Dynamical Properties of Atomic Optical Bistability

Amitabh Joshi, Min Xiao

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical and experimental studies of atomic optical bistability and multistability, and their dynamical properties in systems with two- and three-level inhomogeneously-broadened atoms inside an optical cavity. By making use of the modified linear absorption and dispersion, as well as the greatly enhanced nonlinearity in the three-level electromagnetically induced transparency system, the optical bistablity and efficient all-optical switching can be achieved at relatively low laser powers, which can be well controlled and manipulated. Until now, the rapid rate of progress in applications of multilevel systems in cross-disciplinary field has made it difficult to newcomers to the field to obtain a broad overview of this topic. This monograph will serve the purpose.

OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A DEGENERATE TWO-LEVEL EIT MEDIUM UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD: AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH

Le Thi Minh Phuong, Dinh Xuan Khoa, Nguyen Huy Bang +4 more

We investigate the behavior of optical bistability in a degenerate two-level atomic medium using an external magnetic field to separate the lower level into two distinct levels that both connect to an upper level by the probe and coupling laser fields. Based on analytical solutions, the absorption spectrum and behavior of optical bistability in an electromagnetically induced transparency regime under an external magnetic field are investigated. By controlling the external magnetic field, we find that the appearance and disappearance of the optical bistability can be easily controlled according to the strength of the magnetic field in the transparent window domain. Furthermore, the effects of the intensity of the coupling laser field and the parameters of the system on the behavior of optical bistability are also considered. The proposed model is useful for applications in all-optical switches and magneto-optic storage devices.

Controlled steady-state switching in optical bistability

Andy Brown, Amitabh Joshi, Min Xiao

Optical switching has been achieved between two steady states of optical bistability generated in a system with three-level atoms inside an optical cavity. The optical power switching is controlled by adding short positive (switching up) or negative (switching down) pulses to the input intensity. The coupling laser beam in the three-level atomic system is used to control the threshold value and the width of the hysteresis cycle, which can adjust and optimize the optical switching process.
