Abstract

Differential and total cross sections for various competing two-photon processes in metastable 2s hydrogenic atoms are given for several current laser frequencies. Exact calculations are performed within the framework of conventional time-dependent perturbation theory by using a Sturmian representation of the Coulomb Green’s function. Our results are useful for discussing a recent proposal for obtaining intense vacuum uv light sources from anti-Stokes Raman scattering.

Transition polarisabilities and Raman intensities of hydrogenic systems

V. Chandrasekharan

Analytical expressions for the transition polarisabilities between any two s states for hydrogenic systems have been derived. Results are used to discuss the possibility of observing experimentally the spontaneous anti-Stokes Raman scattering from the metastable 2s state of hydrogen.

Inelastic Raman scattering of light by hydrogenlike ions

Thorsten Jahrsetz, S. Fritzsche, A. Surzhykov

The inelastic Raman scattering of light by hydrogenlike ions has been studied by means of second-order perturbation theory and the relativistic Coulomb Green's-function approach. In particular, we investigate the total and angle-differential Raman cross sections as well as the magnetic sublevel population of the residual (excited) ions. Detailed calculations are performed for the inelastic scattering of photons by neutral hydrogen as well as hydrogenlike xenon and uranium ions, accompanied by the $1{s}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2{s}_{1/2}$, $1{s}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2{p}_{1/2}$, and $1{s}_{1/2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2{p}_{3/2}$ transitions. Moreover, we discuss how the Raman scattering is affected by relativistic and resonance effects as well as the higher-multipole contributions to the electron-photon interaction.

Laser-Induced Quenching of Metastable Deuterium Atoms. Singly Stimulated Two-Photon Emission and Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering

P. Bräunlich, R. J. Hall, P. Lambropoulos

An experimental arrangement for the measurement of singly stimulated two-photon emission and anti-Stokes Raman scattering from metastable deuterium atoms is described. The atoms, produced by charge exchange between cesium vapor and 5-keV deuterons, are subjected to intense light pulses from a Nd-glass laser. The generated photons are detected at the exit slit of a vacuum-uv spectrometer. The results are compared with theoretical calculations by Zernik.

Interaction of laser light with the 21S0metastable state of helium

V. L. Jacobs, Junya Mizuno

The cross sections for singly stimulated two-photon emission and anti-Stokes Raman scattering from the 21S0 metastable state of helium care calculated by a variational procedure for incident photon wavelengths in the range from 5000 AA to 50 mu m.

Excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons

N. K. Rahman, Farhad H. M. Faisal

Cross sections for excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons are calculated with the Bethe-Born approximation. The resulting second-order matrix element is calculated exactly with an analytic Coulomb Green's function. The cross sections are shown to be of direct physical interest with present-day lasers.

Interaction of Optical and Infrared Radiation with Metastable Hydrogen Atoms

Wolfgang Zernik

This paper is an extension of a previous one and discusses the theory of the quenching of the metastable $2S$ state of atomic hydrogen by means of optical radiation, for example by the light from a ruby laser. The case discussed is that for which the incident intensity is sufficiently weak for the usual quantum-electrodynamical perturbation theory to be valid. A procedure developed by Schwartz and others is used to carry out the sum over intermediate states without explicit enumeration. The results are given for a range of incident wavelengths from 5000 \AA{} to 5\ensuremath{\mu}. For unpolarized light from a ruby laser (6934 \AA{}), the total cross section for quenching is found to be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Q}=1.27\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}22}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. The cross section for coherent scattering has also been calculated for the same range of wavelengths; for ruby laser light, the total cross section for scattering is found to be ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{S}=1.03\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}23}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$.
