Abstract

The first-order spatial correlation function of a Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity is measured. It behaves as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory predicts and decays with a power-law.

Spatial correlation of two-dimensional bosonic multimode condensates

Wolfgang H. Nitsche, Na Young Kim, Georgios Roumpos +4 more

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theorem predicts that two-dimensional bosonic condensates exhibit quasi-long-range order which is characterized by a slow decay of the spatial coherence. However previous measurements on exciton-polariton condensates revealed that their spatial coherence can decay faster than allowed under the BKT theory, and different theoretical explanations have already been proposed. Through theoretical and experimental study of exciton-polariton condensates, we show that the fast decay of the coherence can be explained through the simultaneous presence of multiple modes in the condensate.

Excitations in a Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensate of Exciton Polaritons

Michiel Wouters, Iacopo Carusotto

We develop a mean-field theory of the dynamics of a nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. The spectrum of elementary excitations around the stationary state is analytically studied by means of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A diffusive behavior of the Goldstone mode is found in the spatially homogeneous case and new features are predicted for the Josephson effect in a two-well geometry.

Coherence of a non-equilibrium polariton condensate across the interaction-mediated phase transition

P. Comaron, Eliezer Estrecho, Matthias Wurdack +9 more

Abstract The emergence of spatial coherence in a confined two-dimensional Bose gas of exciton polaritons with tuneable interactions offers a unique opportunity to explore the role of interactions in a phase transition in a driven-dissipative quantum system, where both the phase transition and thermalisation are mediated by interactions. We investigate, experimentally and numerically, the spatial coherence and steady-state properties of the gas over a wide range of interaction strengths by varying the photonic/excitonic fraction of the polaritons and their density. We find that the first order spatial correlation function exhibits algebraic decay consistent with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition. The exponent of the algebraic decay is inversely proportional to the coherent fraction of polaritons, in analogy to superfluid fraction of equilibrium quantum gases above the BKT transition, but with a different proportionality constant. Our work paves the way for future investigations of the phenomenon of phase transitions and superfluidity in a driven-dissipative setting.

Second-Order Time Correlations within a Polariton Bose-Einstein Condensate in a CdTe Microcavity

Jacek Kasprzak, Maxime Richard, A. Baas +4 more

Second-order time correlations of polaritons have been measured across the condensation threshold in a CdTe microcavity. The onset of Bose-Einstein condensation is marked by the disappearance of photon bunching, demonstrating the transition from a thermal-like state to a coherent state. Coherence is, however, degraded with increasing polariton density, most probably as a result of self-interaction within the condensate and scatterings with noncondensed excitons and polaritons. Such behavior clearly differentiates polariton Bose condensation from photon lasing.

Condensation of Semiconductor Microcavity Exciton Polaritons

Hui Deng, Gregor Weihs, Charles Santori +2 more

A phase transition from a classical thermal mixed state to a quantum-mechanical pure state of exciton polaritons is observed in a GaAs multiple quantum-well microcavity from the decrease of the second-order coherence function. Supporting evidence is obtained from the observation of a nonlinear threshold behavior in the pump-intensity dependence of the emission, a polariton-like dispersion relation above threshold, and a decrease of the relaxation time into the lower polariton state. The condensation of microcavity exciton polaritons is confirmed.

Intrinsic Decoherence Mechanisms in the Microcavity Polariton Condensate

A. P. D. Love, Dmitry N. Krizhanovskii, David M. Whittaker +8 more

The fundamental mechanisms which control the phase coherence of the polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) are determined. It is shown that the combination of number fluctuations and interactions leads to decoherence with a characteristic Gaussian decay of the first-order correlation function. This line shape, and the long decay times ( approximately 150 ps) of both first- and second-order correlation functions, are explained quantitatively by a quantum-optical model which takes into account interactions, fluctuations, and gain and loss in the system. Interaction limited coherence times of this type have been predicted for atomic BECs, but are yet to be observed experimentally.
