Abstract

We demonstrate a novel type of stable multicomponent vector solitons consisting of two perpendicular four-wave mixing (FWM) dipole components induced by electromagnetically induced gratings. We analyze the formation and steering of the steady dipole solitons and their dynamical (energy transfer) effects. The dipole-mode solitons of two FWM processes have horizontal and vertical orientations, respectively. Omnidirectional Bragg reflections are also investigated.

Observation of multi-component spatial vector solitons of four-wave mixing

Ruimin Wang, Zhenkun Wu, Yiqi Zhang +6 more

We report the observation of multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons composed of eight coexisting four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in two-level atomic system. The formation and stability of the multi-component dipole and vortex vector solitons are observed via changing the experiment parameters, including the frequency detuning, powers, and spatial configuration of the involved beams and the temperature of the medium. The transformation between modulated vortex solitons and rotating dipole solitons is observed at different frequency detunings. The interaction forces between different components of vector solitons are also investigated.

Spatial interplay of two four-wave mixing images

Changbiao Li, Suling Sang, Yiqi Zhang +6 more

We investigate the interplay between the two components of the four-wave mixing (FWM) beams in a ladder-type three-level atomic system. The interplay, including the shift and splitting of the two FWM beams and their intensity modulation, depends on the frequency detuning and the angles as well as the powers of the pump fields. The x-directional splitting due to the cross-phase modulation and y-directional splitting because of electromagnetically induced gratings of FWM beams are investigated. Both the theoretical and experimental results exhibit that the spatial separation and the number of the FWM signals can be well controlled by additional dressing laser beams. Such studies not only can be very useful in better understanding the formation of spatial solitons but also have potential applications in signal processing.

Surface solitons of four-wave mixing in an electromagnetically induced lattice

Yanpeng Zhang, Chenzhi Yuan, Yiqi Zhang +5 more

By creating lattice states with two-dimensional spatial periodic atomic coherence, we report an experimental demonstration of generating two-dimensional surface solitons of a four-wave mixing signal in an electromagnetically induced lattice composed of two electromagnetically induced gratings with different orientations in an atomic medium, each of which can support a one-dimensional surface soliton. The surface solitons can be well controlled by different experimental parameters, such as probe frequency, pump power, and beam incident angles, and can be affected by coherent induced defect states.

Solitons of four-wave mixing in competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity

Zhenkun Wu, Yunzhe Zhang, Zakir Ullah +2 more

We experimentally investigate the soliton formation and dynamics in the nonlinear propagation of the generated signal and probe beams in four-wave mixing (FWM) process with atomic coherence in a three-level atomic system, under the competition between focusing and defocusing nonlinearities, as well as between gain and dissipation, due to the third- and fifth-order nonlinear susceptibilities with opposite signs. With multi-parameter controllability and nonlinear competition in the system, fundamental, dipole, and azimuthally-modulated vortex FWM solitons can transform mutually from one to the other. Such investigations have potential applications in optical pattern formation and control, and all-optical communication.

Collisions of spatial solitons in optically induced lattices

O. G. Romanov

We present the theoretical model of coherent interactions of the light beams in a two-level resonant medium, taking into account a spatial-periodic modulation of the parameters of nonlinear medium in an interference field as well as nonlinear behavior of refractive index and absorption coefficient due to optical bleaching. As evidenced by the results of investigations described in this work, the process of the light beams interaction via scattering from dynamically induced optical gratings in two-level resonant medium is characterized by a number of interesting features like mutual attraction and repulsion, irradiation of additional beams probably due to soliton-soliton diffraction mode, formation of dark spatial solitons in the mode of defocusing interaction that can be used for all-optical control over the spatial structure of laser beams. Formation of bound states of spatial cavity solitons upon intracavity four-wave mixing and possibilities for control over all-optical soliton-based operations are also discussed.

Formation and interaction characteristics of two-component spatial weak-light soliton in a four-level double-Λ type system

Yanchao She, Denglong Wang, Weixi Zhang +2 more

By using the multiple-scale method, we study analytically the formation and stability of two-component spatial optical solitons in a cold, lifetime-broadened resonant four-level double-Λ type atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency. It is shown that stable two-component (1+1) dimension spatial optical solitons with extremely weak light intensity can occur, which is different from the passive ones with photorefractive and planar waveguides. Furthermore, the interaction characteristics between two solitons are studied by numerical simulations. We find that the collisional dynamics and the energy transfer of the two solitons are closely correlated with their relative phase shift. Our results may provide a good idea to obtain useful spatial optical solitons for application in optical soliton communications.
