Abstract

The Fokker-Planck equation for the Glauber quasi-probability is derived, which describes one-photon generation of light in lasers and micromasers using atoms with initial coherence. Stationary lasing and masing conditions are analyzed. In particular, the case of an inversionless transition is considered. The line shape and the photon statistics are found. The field state for lasing on an inversionless transition is found to be coherent.

A theory of two-photon light generation involving inversionless two-level atoms

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

We propose a theory that makes it possible to examine both laser and micromaser two-photon light generation. The theory is based on the Lamb-Scully model, in which two-level atoms have initial coherence. Such an initial state allows for light generation involving atoms without inversion or even atoms with negative population inversion in the transition. We analyze the conditions needed for the emergence of squeezed states of the light field. We also show that the photon statistics in lasing is always classical but that there appears a state of the field squeezed in the phase with maximum photodetection shot-noise suppression. For a micromaser we find a regime where sub-Poisson light with a shot-noise suppression level of 60% is realized in an inversionless transition. In another regime, a squeezed state that produces 75% suppression of noise can be generated.

Quantum theory of non-degenerate inversionless laser: Effects of initial partial coherence

Nadeem A. Ansari, A. H. Toor

In this paper, we have included the effects of initial partial coherence in the quantum theory of a non-degenerate inversionless laser. A three-level atomic system in open A-configuration is considered. The atoms are initially prepared in the partial coherent superposition of the lower two atomic levels with some incoherent population in the excited state. The master equation for the cavity field modes is derived and converted into a Fokker-Planck equation to determine the phase locking and stability conditions. The effects of initial partial coherence on the gain of two modes are studied under these conditions. The range of values of the initial partial coherence for which the action of lasing without inversion can take place are shown. Our results show that under certain conditions the two modes can amplify with equal gain below threshold.

Micromaser operation in correlated atoms

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

Stimulated emission of two-level atoms in a high-Q cavity is considered under conditions when pumping produces correlated many-atomic states. Based on the many-body problem, a kinetic equation is obtained for the Glauber–Sudarshan probability, which describes the field in the Fokker–Planck approximation. The statistics of light in this approximation are determined by the atomic correlation functions of the order of no higher than the second. The noise of light is found in the regime of micromaser operation for two types of pumping producing the initial separable states with a classical correlation and entangled states. It is shown that the presence of the initial diatomic correlation enhances the intensity noise. The entangled state of atoms is found from which nonclassical light is generated with a steady-state phase and noise, which can be almost completely suppressed in the low-frequency spectral region.

Micromaser action in atomic clusters

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

Optical micromaser action is considered in atomic clusters that can be involved in separable and entangled initial correlations. An equation describing the evolution of the Glauber quasi-probability for a light field is constructed in the Fokker-Planck approximation. The statistics of radiation emitted by a cavity is analyzed.

Single-atom laser: Coherent and nonclassical effects in the regime of a strong atom-field correlation

S. Ya. Kilin, T. B. Karlovich

Based on the approximation of strong correlations between an atom and an intracavity field, which implies the equal probabilities of finding the atom in the ground state and n photons in the field and of finding the atom in an excited state and n −1 photons in the field, it is shown that the conditional states of a field generated by a single-atom laser are described by the diagonal part of the generalized coherent Mittag-Leffler state. The quasi-distributions P and Q of the intracavity-field probability amplitude are found, and the boundedness of the Glauber function on a segment is shown. The possibility of inversionless lasing is demonstrated, and the absence of a lasing threshold is found for some region of parameters. The regimes of generation of the amplitude-squeezed states of the field are studied and the parameters of the system providing the maximum squeezing are determined. It is shown that the atom-field states are entangled at weak pump intensities.

Quantum theory of light generation by two-level atoms without inversion

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

When pumping produces atomic coherence on working levels or atomic polarization two-level atom can generate the light without inversion. In such systems one- and two-photon generation of the light is considered for the laser and micromaser operation. Using Lamb-Scully model generalized for coherent pumping statistics of the light is considered. Two-photon laser operation is found to be phase squeezed and perfect noise reduction can be achieved. In maser a set of steady state of subpoissian photon statistics is found. For these states the noise reduction up to 60 percent can be obtained if inversion is zero. Phase squeezing in micromaser is found.
