Electron–Phonon Interactions on the Optical Kerr Effect in a Quantum Disc

Abstract

The optical Kerr effect in a quantum disc is investigated with the density-matrix approach, most emphasis is devoted to the electron–phonon interactions on the optical Kerr effect. The numerical results are presented with characteristic parameters of a GaAs quantum disc. It is shown that the optical Kerr effect increases as the disc thickness D decreases. LO-phonons impose greater influence on the optical Kerr effect than SO-phonons. The smaller the disc thickness D , the sharper the peak, and the larger the peak intensity. When the disc thickness is greater than 30, the peak will disappear gradually.

Influence of Electron-phonon Interaction on the Optical Absorptions in Square Tangent Quantum Wells

Zhou Li-pin

The optical absorptions coefficients with considering the electron-phonon interaction were theoretically studied in square tangent quantum wells. The wave functions and energy levels are described in square tangent quantum wells by perturbation theory when the polaron effects were considered, and analytic expression for the linear and the third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients was obtained by the compact density-matrix method and the iterative procedure. The numerical results for typical GaAs/AlGaAs material showed that the electron-phonon interaction had great influence on the linear, nonlinear and total optical absorption, meanwhile the absorption saturation phenomenon was more obvious than the one without considering the polaron effects. Moreover, the changes of the total optical absorptions increased with the well width b decreasing or the well depth V0 increasing when the electron-phonon interaction was considered.

Effects of Electron-Phonon Interaction on Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorption in Cylindrical Quantum Wires

Youbin Yu

The electron-phonon interaction influences on linear and nonlinear optical absorption in cylindrical quantum wires (CQW) with an infinite confining potential are investigated. The optical absorption coefficients are obtained by using the compact-density-matrix approach and iterative method, and the numerical results are presented for GaAs CQW. The results show that the electron-phonon interaction makes a distinct influence on optical absorption in CQW. The electron-phonon interaction on the wave functions of electron dominates the values of absorption coefficients and the correction of the electron-phonon effect on the energies of the electron makes the absorption peaks blue shift and become wider. Moreover, the electron-phonon interaction influence on optical absorption with an infinite confining potential is different from that with a finite confining potential.

ELECTRON–PHONON INTERACTION EFFECTS ON THIRD-HARMONIC GENERATION IN CYLINDRICAL QUANTUM WIRES

Youbin Yu, Kangxian Guo

The influence of electron–phonon interaction on third-harmonic generation in cylindrical quantum wires are investigated. The third-harmonic generation coefficient is obtained using compact-density-matrix approach and iterative method, and the numerical results are presented for GaAs cylindrical quantum wires. The results show that the third-harmonic generation coefficient is greatly enhanced after taking into consideration the influence of electron–phonon interaction. It is about thirty times larger than that obtained by just considering electron states when electron–phonon resonance is met.

In this work, The effects of electron-phonon interaction on the linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are investigated theoretically. In this regard the compact-density matrix approach and iterative methods are employed and the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes of a GaAs quantum box are obtained. The results show that the magnitude of these quantities are enhanced, the peaks are shifted to the higher energies and the width of the peaks becomes larger as the influence of electron-phonon interaction is considered.

The influence of electron-phonon interactions on third-harmonic generation in a square quantum well is investigated. The first- and third-harmonic generation coefficient is obtained by using compact-density-matrix approach and iterative method, and the numerical results are presented for a GaAs square quantum well.
