Ground States of the One-Dimensional Anisotropic Extended Hubbard Model

Abstract

We investigate a one-dimensional half-filled electron system with on-site and spin-dependent nearest-neighbor-site Coulomb interactions. Non-Tomonaga-Luttinger-type scatterings bring about Gaussian and hidden SU(2) Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in the charge and spin parts. We accurately determine these critical points using the level-spectroscopy method. The boundaries deviate from those given by bosonization prediction with the increase of interactions. In particular, in the easy-plain anisotropy region, we find a crossing point of transition lines in the charge and spin parts, which is a multicritical point of four phases. We also check consistencies among excitation levels.

Tricritical behavior in the extended Hubbard chains

Masaaki Nakamura

Phase diagrams of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor interaction $V)$ at half- and quarter-filling are studied by observing level crossings of excitation spectra using the exact diagonalization. This method is based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory including logarithmic corrections which stem from the renormalization of the Umklapp- and the backward-scattering effects. Using this approach, the phase boundaries are determined with high accuracy, and then the structure of the phase diagram is clarified. At half-filling, the phase diagram consists of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines and one Gaussian transition line in the charge sector, and one spin-gap transition line. This structure reflects the $\mathrm{U}(1)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry of the electron system. Near the $U=2V$ line, the Gaussian and the spin-gap transitions take place independently from the weak- to the intermediate-coupling region, but these two transition lines are coupled in the strong-coupling region. This result demonstrates existence of a tricritical point and a bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase between charge- and spin-density-wave (CDW, SDW) phases. To clarify this mechanism of the transition, we also investigate effect of a correlated hopping term, which plays a role to enlarge BCDW and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases. At quarter-filling, a similar crossover phenomenon also takes place in the large-$V$ region involving spin-gap and BKT-type metal-insulator transitions.

Global structure of ground-state phase diagrams in the one-dimensional anisotropic extended Hubbard model

Hiromi Otsuka

We discuss global structures of ground-state phase diagrams in a one-dimensional half-filled electron system with on-site and spin-dependent nearest-neighbor-site Coulomb interactions. We compare our numerical calculation data for phase boundary lines with their analytical expressions in three limiting regions of interaction parameters and find good agreement between them. In the intermediate-coupling region, however, we observe nontrivial structures of phase diagrams: For systems with weak easy-plain anisotropy, both the bond-located spin- and charge-density-wave phases are realized. The latter contacts with the ferromagnetic phase stabilized in the strong-coupling region. On the other hand, when anisotropy becomes large, the intermediate phase disappears and consequently a direct transition between the former and ferromagnetic phase is observed.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model

Satoshi Ejima, Satoshi Nishimoto

We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (nearest-neighbor) repulsive interaction U (V) and nearest-neighbor hopping t using the density-matrix renormalization group technique. Based on the results of the excitation gaps, Luttinger-liquid exponents, and bond-order-wave (BOW) order parameter, we confirm that the BOW phase appears in a substantial region between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave phases. Each phase boundary is determined by multiple means and it allows us to make a cross-check on the validity of our estimations. We also find that the BOW-CDW transition changes from continuous to first order at the tricritical point (U(t),V(t)) approximately (5.89 t,3.10 t) and the BOW phase shrinks to zero at the critical end point (U(c),V(c)) approximately (9.25 t,4.76 t).

Tomonaga-Luttinger parameters and spin excitations in the dimerized extended Hubbard model

Satoshi Ejima, Florian Gebhard, Satoshi Nishimoto

We study the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with alternating size of the hopping integrals using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We calculate the spin gap, the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter, and the charge-density-wave order parameter for various dimerizations, interaction strengths, and band fillings. At half band-filling the spin and charge excitations are gapped but these gaps disappear for infinitesimal hole doping. At quarter filling, the umklapp scattering in the half-filled lower Peierls band generates a gap for the charge excitations but the gapless spin excitations can be described in terms of an effective antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Beyond a critical strength for the nearest-neighbor interaction, the dimerized extended Hubbard model at quarter filling develops a charge-density-wave ground state. The dimerization and the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction strongly reduce the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter from its value for the bare Hubbard model. We discuss the relevance of our findings for the Bechgaard salts.

Quantum information analysis of the phase diagram of the half-filled extended Hubbard model

Cornelius Mund, Örs Legeza, R. M. Noack

We examine the phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model using quantum information entropies within the density-matrix renormalization group. It is well known that there is a charge-density-wave phase at large nearest-neighbor and a small on-site Coulomb repulsion and a spin-density wave at small nearest-neighbor and large on-site Coulomb repulsion. At intermediate Coulomb interaction strength, we find an additional narrow region of a bond-order phase between these two phases. The phase transition line for the transition out of the charge-density-wave phase changes from first order at strong coupling to second order in a parameter regime where all three phases are present. We present evidence that the additional phase-transition line between the spin-density-wave and bond-order phases is infinite order. While these results are in agreement with recent numerical work, our study provides an independent unbiased means of determining the phase boundaries by using quantum information analysis, yields values for the location of some of the phase boundaries that differ from those previously found, and provides insight into the limitations of numerical methods in determining phase boundaries, especially those of infinite-order transitions.

Possible exotic phases in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Anders W. Sandvik, David K Campbell

We investigate numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, including an on-site interaction U and a nearest-neighbor interaction V. We focus on the ground state phases of the model in the $V\ensuremath{\gg}U$ region, where previous studies have suggested the possibility of dominant superconducting pairing fluctuations before the system phase separates at a critical value ${V=V}_{\mathrm{PS}}.$ Using quantum Monte Carlo methods on lattices much larger than in previous Lancz\"os diagonalization studies, we determine the boundary of phase separation, the Luttinger-liquid correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ and other correlation functions in this region. We find that phase separation occurs for V significantly smaller than previously reported. In addition, for negative U, we find that a uniform state reenters from phase separation as the electron density is increased towards half filling. For $V<{V}_{\mathrm{PS}},$ our results show that superconducting fluctuations are not dominant. The system behaves asymptotically as a Luttinger liquid with ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}<1,$ but we also find strong low-energy (but gapped) charge-density fluctuations at a momentum not expected for a standard Luttinger liquid.
