Abstract

We examine the phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model using quantum information entropies within the density-matrix renormalization group. It is well known that there is a charge-density-wave phase at large nearest-neighbor and a small on-site Coulomb repulsion and a spin-density wave at small nearest-neighbor and large on-site Coulomb repulsion. At intermediate Coulomb interaction strength, we find an additional narrow region of a bond-order phase between these two phases. The phase transition line for the transition out of the charge-density-wave phase changes from first order at strong coupling to second order in a parameter regime where all three phases are present. We present evidence that the additional phase-transition line between the spin-density-wave and bond-order phases is infinite order. While these results are in agreement with recent numerical work, our study provides an independent unbiased means of determining the phase boundaries by using quantum information analysis, yields values for the location of some of the phase boundaries that differ from those previously found, and provides insight into the limitations of numerical methods in determining phase boundaries, especially those of infinite-order transitions.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model

Satoshi Ejima, Satoshi Nishimoto

We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (nearest-neighbor) repulsive interaction U (V) and nearest-neighbor hopping t using the density-matrix renormalization group technique. Based on the results of the excitation gaps, Luttinger-liquid exponents, and bond-order-wave (BOW) order parameter, we confirm that the BOW phase appears in a substantial region between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave phases. Each phase boundary is determined by multiple means and it allows us to make a cross-check on the validity of our estimations. We also find that the BOW-CDW transition changes from continuous to first order at the tricritical point (U(t),V(t)) approximately (5.89 t,3.10 t) and the BOW phase shrinks to zero at the critical end point (U(c),V(c)) approximately (9.25 t,4.76 t).

Existence of Bond-Order-Wave Phase in One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Guanghua Liu, Chun‐Hai Wang

By using the density matrix renormalization group technique, the phase diagram of the half-filling extended Hubbard model is investigated. The conventional order parameter, the two-site entanglement entropy, and the block-block entanglement entropy are analyzed in detail. According to the numerical results, in the weak coupling region, an intermediate bond-order-wave (BOW) phase is shown to exist indeed between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and the spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. The critical phase transition points are determined by the singularity of the first order derivative of two-site entanglement entropy. In strong coupling region, a direct phase transition occurs from SDW phase to CDW phase, and shows discontinuous (first order) character accompanied with energy level crossing. The numerical results support the phase diagram proposed previously by some authors Sengupta et al., (2002); Sandvik et al., (2004); Zhang, (2004). Therefore, the quantum entanglement is a sensitive tool to describe quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated electron systems.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of a Half-Filled One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Eric Jeckelmann

The density-matrix renormalization group is used to study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsion and hopping t. A critical line V(c)(U) approximately U/2 separates a Mott insulating phase from a charge-density-wave phase. The formation of bound charge excitations for V>2t changes the phase transition from continuous to first-order at a tricritical point U(t) approximately 3.7t, V(t)=2t. A frustrating effective antiferromagnetic spin coupling induces a bond-order-wave phase on the critical line V(c)(U) for U(t)<U less, similar 7t.

Phase Diagram of the One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model at Half Filling

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We reexamine the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. We calculate second-order corrections to coupling constants in the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach ( g-ology) to show that the bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for weak couplings in between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons destabilizes the BCDW state and gives rise to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line.

Half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model: Phase diagram and thermodynamics

S. Glocke, Andreas Klümper, Jesko Sirker

We study the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling using a density-matrix renormalization group method applied to transfer matrices. We show that the various phase transitions in this system can be detected by measuring usual thermodynamic quantities such as the isothermal compressibility and the uniform magnetic susceptibility. For the isothermal compressibility, we show that universal crossing points exist, which allow us to accurately determine the line where the charge gap vanishes. By studying, in addition, several correlation functions, we confirm the existence of a phase with long-range dimer order (bond order), which has been a matter of debate for several years. According to our calculations, this phase is located in a narrow region between the spin-density and charge-density wave phases up to a tricritical point, which we estimate to be at ${U}_{t}=6.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2$, ${V}_{t}=3.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1$. Our results for the phase diagram are in good agreement with the most recent zero-temperature density-matrix renormalization group study; however, they disagree in some important aspects from the most recent Quantum-Monte-Carlo study.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Akira Furusaki

We revisit the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. In the first half of the paper, using the weak-coupling renormalization-group approach $(g$-ology) including second-order corrections to the coupling constants, we show that bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) phase exists for $U\ensuremath{\approx}2V$ in between charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. We find that the umklapp scattering of parallel-spin electrons disfavors the BCDW state and leads to a bicritical point where the CDW-BCDW and SDW-BCDW continuous-transition lines merge into the CDW-SDW first-order transition line. In the second half of the paper, we investigate the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with either additional staggered site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}.$ Although the alternating site potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ strongly favors the CDW state (that is, a band insulator), the BCDW state is not destroyed completely and occupies a finite region in the phase diagram. Our result is a natural generalization of the work by Fabrizio, Gogolin, and Nersesyan [Phys. Rev. Lett. $83,$ 2014 (1999)], who predicted the existence of a spontaneously dimerized insulating state between a band insulator and a Mott insulator in the phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model. The bond alternation $\ensuremath{\delta}$ destroys the SDW state and changes it into the BCDW state (or Peierls insulating state). As a result the phase diagram of the model with $\ensuremath{\delta}$ contains only a single critical line separating the Peierls insulator phase and the CDW phase. The addition of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ or $\ensuremath{\delta}$ changes the universality class of the CDW-BCDW transition from the Gaussian transition into the Ising transition.
