Abstract

We investigate the optimal control problem in non-Markovian open, dissipative quantum system. Optimal control using Pontryagin maximum principle of this problem has been specifically derived. The influences of Ohmic reservoir with Lorentz-Drude regularization are numerically studied in a two-level system under the following three conditions w0Lt wc, w0ap wcor w0Gt wcrespectively. The optimal control process shows its remarkable influences to the decoherence dynamics. The temperature is a key factor in the decoherence dynamics. We analysis the optimal decoherence control in high temperature, intermediate temperature, and low temperature reservoirs respectively. It implies that designing some engineered reservoirs with the controlled coupling and state of the environment can slow down the decoherence rate and delay the decoherence time. Moreover, we compared the non-Markovian optimal decoherence control with the Markovian one, we find that with non-Markovian the engineered artificial reservoirs are better than with the Markovian approximate in controlling the open, dissipative quantum systempsilas decoherence.

We investigate the optimal control problem for a non-Markovian open, dissipative quantum system. Optimal control using the Pontryagin maximum principle is specifically derived. The influences of ohmic reservoir with Lorentz-Drude regularization are numerically studied in a two-level system under the following three conditions: ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}⪡{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}\ensuremath{\approx}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, or ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}⪢{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ is the characteristic frequency of the quantum system of interest, and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$ the cutoff frequency of the ohmic reservoir. The optimal control process shows its remarkable influences on the decoherence dynamics. The temperature is a key factor in the decoherence dynamics. We analyze the optimal decoherence control in high temperature, intermediate temperature, and low temperature reservoirs, respectively. Moreover, we compare the non-Markovian optimal decoherence control with the Markovian one and find that with non-Markovian the engineered artificial reservoirs are better than with the Markovian approximation in controlling the open, dissipative quantum system's decoherence.

Optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum systems via feedback

Zairong Xi, Wei Cui, Yu Pan

The problem of optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum system via weak measurement is presented. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we evaluate exactly the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the system of interest interacting with a dissipative reservoir. We find that the non-Markovian reservoir has dual effects on the system: dissipation and backaction. The dissipation exhausts the coherence of the quantum system, whereas the backaction revives it. Moreover, we design the control Hamiltonian with the control laws attained by the stochastic optimal control and the corresponding optimal principle. At last, we considered the exact decoherence dynamics of a qubit in a dissipative reservoir composed of harmonic oscillators, and demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimal control strategy. Simulation results showed that the coherence will completely lost in the absence of control neither in non-Markovian nor Markovian system. However, the optimal feedback control steers it to a stationary stochastic process which fluctuates around the target. In this case the decoherence can be controlled effectively, which indicates that the engineered artificial reservoirs with optimal feedback control may be designed to protect the quantum coherence in quantum information and quantum computation.

Optimal control of population inversion in open quantum systems

Wei Cui

We consider an optimal control problem for the quantum population transfer in open quantum systems. Quantum optimal control using the Pontryagin maximum principle is specifically derived. The influences of surrounding environment are analytically and numerically studied. In particular, we demonstrate that the quantum optimal control ability remarkablely dependents on temperatures. Only at low temperatures, the derived control laws have active performance and the quantum decoherence time can be extended.

Optimal control of non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum systems

Wei Cui

We study the optimal control problem in a non-Markovian open quantum system. The quantum system of interest is coupled to its local environment, which is dissipative in nature and tends to decay the quantum system. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we study the non-Markovian effects on the system dynamics. The non-Markovian environment has dual effects on the quantum system: the dissipation and the backaction. The dissipation effect makes the system lose of quantum features, whereas the backaction revives it. We further design quantum control laws to control the system. The optimal control principle is studied to steer to quantum state to a target state. Finally, as an example, we used the optimal control method to control the quantum decoherence.

Stochastic optimal control formalism for an open quantum system

Chungwei Lin, Dries Sels, Yanting Ma +1 more

A stochastic procedure is developed which allows one to express Pontryagin's maximum principle for a dissipative quantum system solely in terms of stochastic wave functions. Time-optimal controls can be efficiently computed without computing the density matrix. Specifically, the proper dynamical update rules are presented for the stochastic costate variables introduced by Pontryagin's maximum principle, and restrictions on the form of the terminal cost function are discussed. The proposed procedure is confirmed by comparing the results to those obtained from optimal control on Lindbladian dynamics. Numerically, the proposed formalism becomes time and memory efficient for large systems, and it can be generalized to describe non-Markovian dynamics.

A Quantum Optimal Control Problem with State Constrained Preserving Coherence

Nahid Binandeh Dehaghani, Фернандо Лобо Перейра, A. Pedro Aguiar

In this work, we address the problem of maximizing fidelity in a quantum state transformation process controlled in such a way as to keep decoherence within given bounds. We consider a three-level Λ-type atom subjected to Markovian decoherence characterized by non-unital decoherence channels. We introduce fidelity as the performance index for the quantum state transformation process since the goal is to maximize the similarity of the final state density operator with the one of the desired target state. We formulate the quantum optimal control problem with state constraints where the latter reflect the fact that the decoherence level remains within a pre-defined bound. Optimality conditions of Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle in Gamkrelidze’s form are given. These provide a complete set of relations enabling the computation of the optimal control strategy. This is a novel approach in the context of quantum systems.
