Abstract

The problem of optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum system via weak measurement is presented. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we evaluate exactly the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the system of interest interacting with a dissipative reservoir. We find that the non-Markovian reservoir has dual effects on the system: dissipation and backaction. The dissipation exhausts the coherence of the quantum system, whereas the backaction revives it. Moreover, we design the control Hamiltonian with the control laws attained by the stochastic optimal control and the corresponding optimal principle. At last, we considered the exact decoherence dynamics of a qubit in a dissipative reservoir composed of harmonic oscillators, and demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimal control strategy. Simulation results showed that the coherence will completely lost in the absence of control neither in non-Markovian nor Markovian system. However, the optimal feedback control steers it to a stationary stochastic process which fluctuates around the target. In this case the decoherence can be controlled effectively, which indicates that the engineered artificial reservoirs with optimal feedback control may be designed to protect the quantum coherence in quantum information and quantum computation.

Optimal control of non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum systems

We study the optimal control problem in a non-Markovian open quantum system. The quantum system of interest is coupled to its local environment, which is dissipative in nature and tends to decay the quantum system. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we study the non-Markovian effects on the system dynamics. The non-Markovian environment has dual effects on the quantum system: the dissipation and the backaction. The dissipation effect makes the system lose of quantum features, whereas the backaction revives it. We further design quantum control laws to control the system. The optimal control principle is studied to steer to quantum state to a target state. Finally, as an example, we used the optimal control method to control the quantum decoherence.

Optimal decoherence control of non-Markovian open quantum systems

Wei Cui, Zairong Xi, Yu Pan

We investigate the optimal control problem in non-Markovian open, dissipative quantum system. Optimal control using Pontryagin maximum principle of this problem has been specifically derived. The influences of Ohmic reservoir with Lorentz-Drude regularization are numerically studied in a two-level system under the following three conditions w0Lt wc, w0ap wcor w0Gt wcrespectively. The optimal control process shows its remarkable influences to the decoherence dynamics. The temperature is a key factor in the decoherence dynamics. We analysis the optimal decoherence control in high temperature, intermediate temperature, and low temperature reservoirs respectively. It implies that designing some engineered reservoirs with the controlled coupling and state of the environment can slow down the decoherence rate and delay the decoherence time. Moreover, we compared the non-Markovian optimal decoherence control with the Markovian one, we find that with non-Markovian the engineered artificial reservoirs are better than with the Markovian approximate in controlling the open, dissipative quantum systempsilas decoherence.

Measurement-Based Feedback of Open Quantum Systems: A Control-Theoretic Review and Tutorial

Weichao Liang, Jing Zhang, Gaoyue Guo +1 more

This review develops a control-theoretic perspective on measurement-based feedback for continuously monitored open quantum systems, with the main analysis focused on finite-dimensional systems governed by diffusive stochastic master equations. We introduce the relevant state-space, invariant-subspace, and quantum non-demolition structures, interpret quantum filtering as nonlinear observer dynamics, and review open-loop asymptotics, filter stability, state-feedback stabilization, robustness, and reduced-order observer-based control. Particular emphasis is placed on a recurrence--contraction framework, in which Hamiltonian feedback removes non-target invariant obstructions while measurement-induced dynamics provide local exponential contraction. Although the detailed analysis is developed for finite-dimensional diffusive models, the underlying measurement--estimation--feedback architecture is relevant across a broad range of quantum platforms. We further discuss implementation challenges and open problems involving scalable estimation, sampling and delay, adaptation, hybrid and non-Markovian dynamics, practical stability, optimal control, and learning-based design. By organizing these developments around invariance, estimation, recurrence, and contraction, the review provides a tutorial bridge between measurement-based quantum feedback and nonlinear stochastic control.

Nonlinear Optimal Feedback Control of the Two-Level Open Non-Markovian Stochastic Quantum System

Shahid Qamar, Shuang Cong, Kezhi Li +2 more

In this paper, a nonlinear optimal feedback control based on the nonlinear state estimator for a two-level open non-Markovian stochastic quantum system is proposed. The proposed nonlinear state estimator is designed by using the state-dependent differential Riccati equation and constructed to optimally estimate the state. The estimated state is updated by the output data of continuous weak measurement of the controlled quantum system and used to design the nonlinear state feedback controller to track the output of the reference model. The output state of reference model is chosen as the desired performance. The numerical simulation results verify the achievability of the proposed state feedback control strategy, and the capability to steer the state of system from any arbitrary initial state to the final reference target state with high state transfer success rate.

Optimal control for non-Markovian open quantum systems

Bin Hwang, Hsi‐Sheng Goan

An efficient optimal-control theory based on the Krotov method is introduced for a non-Markovian open quantum system with a time-nonlocal master equation in which the control parameter and the bath correlation function are correlated. This optimal-control method is developed via a quantum dissipation formulation that transforms the time-nonlocal master equation to a set of coupled linear time-local equations of motion in an extended auxiliary Liouville space. As an illustration, the optimal-control method is applied to find the control sequences for high-fidelity $Z$ gates and identity gates of a qubit embedded in a non-Markovian bath. $Z$ gates and identity gates with errors less than ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ for a wide range of bath decoherence parameters can be achieved for the non-Markovian open qubit system with control over only the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{z}$ term. The control-dissipation correlation and the memory effect of the bath are crucial in achieving the high-fidelity gates.
