Nonreciprocity of gamma emission and absorption due to quantum coherence at nuclear-level crossings

Abstract

We show that the presence of destructive interference due to quantum coherence at nuclear Zeeman level crossings can totally preclude \ensuremath{\gamma}-resonant absorption under appropriate conditions leaving resonant emission intact. The underlying principle can be demonstrated in a M\"ossbauer effect experiment and has broad consequences in the domain of gamma optics.

Aspects of EIT with gamma radiation

S. Gheysen, Romain Coussement, Hajime Muramatsu +3 more

We have observed the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a nuclear system. A series of Mössbauer measurements was performed on a single crystal of natural FeCO3. When the condition of nuclear level crossing is fulfilled, a clear reduction in absorption or transparency is seen at the point of level crossing. This reduced absorption cannot be ascribed to saturation effects because of the specific geometry of the experiment. We present an explanation in terms of level mixing by a small non-axial component of the electric field gradient. It can be shown that such a scheme is equivalent, at least in principle, with the schemes considered for EIT in quantum optics.

Quantum-interference effects for gamma radiation under crossing-anticrossing conditions for nuclear levels in an RF field

Sh. Sh. Bashkirov, V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov

A new approach to observing the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in gamma optics is proposed. The propagation of a resonant photon in a 57 Fe magnetic medium in an applied rf field is considered for this purpose. It is shown that, under crossing-anticrossing conditions, a resonant rf field substantially changes the gamma-optical properties of the medium, which become dependent on the parameters of the field. This opens the possibility for exercising a coherent control of the photon group velocity and a controllable filtration of unpolarized gamma radiation in a sample.

Effects of quantum interference on Mossbauer gamma transitions

É. K. Sadykov, L. L. Zakirov, Юричук Александр Александрович

In recent years there became actual studies of quantum interference on gamma spectroscopic transitions induced by coherent perturbations.A special attention is paid to gamma transitions in compound systems. In this work it is shown that quantum interference effects (QIE) occur in gamma quantum spontaneous emission spectrum of an electron-nuclear paramagnetic system when electron spin resonance is induced. Occurrence of QIE is connected to preparation of the quantum system initial state. The role of electron relaxation is defined: increase of relaxation rate leads to extinguishing of QIE. The cases of stationary excitation of Mossbauer levels by wide and narrow spectra are considered.

Transparency and delay in resonant scattering of gamma photons

S. Gheysen, K. Vyvey, J. Odeurs

We present a fully quantum mechanical treatment of resonant scattering of gamma radiation in a nuclear Λ-scheme. Simulations of the closed-form solution for the radiation intensity for N effective scatterers contributions are compared with Mössbauer spectra of FeCO3. It is shown that, although the nuclear level mixing scheme does not fulfill EIT conditions, the observable effects are similar. The change in polarization of the scattered radiation, due to level mixing, gives rise to the development of a strong complementary polarization state which is delayed with respect to the incident photon and to a reduction in absorption because this state does not interfere with the incident photon.

Quantum interference effects of γ radiation under crossing-anticrossing of nuclear levels in an RF field

Sh. Sh. Bashkirov, V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov +2 more

The quantum interference effects occurring in resonant scattering of a γ photon in the multilevel γ-optical medium 57 Fe, affected by an external RF field, have been theoretically investigated. It is shown that a significant reconstruction of the hyperfine structure of nuclear states leads to the interference of partial forwardscattering amplitudes of a γ photon and, therefore, to a significant change in the nuclear refractive index of the γ-optical medium, depending on the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the external RF field. The conditions are found under which the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency can be observed in the technique of in-phase detection of γ photons.

Suppression ofγ-photon absorption via quantum interference

We show that the interference effects (similar to electromagnetically induced transparency, which was widely studied earlier in electronic transitions in optics) may appear in γ-radiation at nuclear transitions under the condition of nuclear level anticrossing. We demonstrate it also experimentally in optically thin samples of FeCO3.
