Abstract

We present a source of noncollinear correlated photon pairs in the standard 1550 nm telecommunication band. They are generated by a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process and emitted in a cone because of type-I noncollinear phase matching. Within the band, the source gives a completely flexible choice of the frequencies of the photon pairs, and correlation properties related to spatial momentum as well as energy and time can easily be utilized. We characterize the source by measuring the spatial intensity distribution of the down-converted light and by performing coincidence counting.

Efficient source of high purity polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550nm telecommunication band

Tae-Gon Noh, Heonoh Kim, Taehyoung Zyung +1 more

The authors present an efficient source of high purity polarization-entangled photon pairs in the standard 1550nm telecommunication band using a type-II degenerate parametric downconversion process. They first measured the spatial intensity distributions of the downconverted light to verify the beamlike, collinear, and noncollinear generations at the 1550nm wavelength. All four Bell states could easily be generated by selecting the intersection of two downconverted light cones in the noncollinear phase matching. They observed two-photon fringe visibilities of up to 98±3% and violations of Bell’s inequality by up to nine standard deviations when the accidental coincidences were subtracted.

Pulsed Sagnac source of polarization-entangled photon pairs in telecommunication band

Heonoh Kim, Osung Kwon, Han Seb Moon

We report a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550-nm telecommunication band, which is based on non-collinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal pumped by picosecond pulses. This source is realized utilizing a polarization-based Sagnac interferometer employing a type-0 non-collinear quasi-phase-matching configuration. Polarization entanglement is verified through measurement of the polarization-correlation interference fringes with visibility >96% and by testing the experimental violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) form of Bell's inequality. The CHSH-Bell parameter S is found to be 2.72 ± 0.04, with 18 standard deviations from the statistical uncertainty.

Spatial and spectral characterization of photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths from type-0 spontaneous parametric downconversion

Evelyn A. Ortega, Jorge Fuenzalida, Mirela Selimović +7 more

The thorough characterization of entangled-photon sources is vital for their optimal use in quantum communication. However, this task is not trivial at telecommunication wavelengths. While cameras and spectrometers are well developed for visible and near-infrared spectra, this does not apply in the mid-infrared range. Here, we present a spatial and spectral characterization of photon pairs emitted in a type-0 phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconverted source. We experimentally show how these photon properties are modified by the crystal temperature. This parameter allows easy modification of photon-pair properties to fit multiplexing schemes based on only one entanglement photon source. Our results pave the way for the optimal design and use of spatial and spectral properties of quantum-correlated photon pairs at telecommunication wavelengths.

Generation of cross-polarized photon pairs in a 800-nm band via Type II parametric down-conversion using a periodically poled Lithium Niobate

S. Nagano, Koji Suizu, Y. Sugiura +3 more

We have developed a high-efficiency source of cross-polarized photon pairs via type-II quasi-phase matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The photon pairs are generated from the PPLN in fifth-order quasi-phase matched condition around 800 nm, which matches the wavelength band of efficient Si avalanche photodiodes. We obtained 25,000 coincidence counts sec-1mW-1of the photon pairs.

A pump enhanced source of telecom-band correlated photon pairs

Peter James Thomas, Malcolm H. Dunn, David J. M. Stothard +2 more

Correlated photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric downconversion have become a key resource for research into enhanced optical measurement and quantum optical information processing. A pump-enhanced χ(2) source of correlated photons in the telecom band is presented. An investigation of the pair photon coincidence detection rate measured from the source, together with the evaluation of system losses, indicated a single spatial fibre-optic mode pair production rate of 6.12 × 104 s−1 mW−1 pump power, an order of magnitude greater than was measured without enhancement. A Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment confirmed that the enhancement did not have any adverse effect on the spatial and frequency indistinguishability of the emitted pairs. The source comprises a symmetric and linear enhancement cavity for the pump, making it particularly suitable for generating polarisation entangled photon pairs without the need for compensating crystals 1 Thomas, PJ, Chunnilall, CJ, Stothard, DJM, Walsh, DA and Dunn, MH. 2010.
