Abstract

Based on the former quantum-mechanical study on the effective harmonic trap confining an ultracold ion, we make a quantum-mechanical treatment for the radiation field of the laser. Thus some two-mode nonclassical states, i.e., an approximate two-mode squeezed state and different two-mode entangled Fock states can be prepared in the red- and blue-detuning cases, respectively, within Lamb-Dicke regime and strong confinement limit.

Generation of Entangled Displacement Fock State of Trapped Ion Manipulated by a Laser Beam

Zhongjie Wang, Zhang Ke-Fu

The interaction of a single two-level two-mode trapped ion with a laser beam has been studied theoretically. With application of a unitary transformation, an analytical solution to this quantum system has been obtained without performing the Lamb–Dicke approximation. In this system the entangled displacement Fock state is produced.

Generation of Nonclassical Motional States of a Trapped Atom

D. M. Meekhof, Christopher R. Monroe, B. E. King +2 more

We report the creation of thermal, Fock, coherent, and squeezed states of motion of a harmonically bound 9 Be + ion. The last three states are coherently prepared from an ion which has been initially laser-cooled to the zero-point of motion. The ion is trapped in the regime where the coupling between its motional and internal states, due to applied (classical) radiation, can be described by a Jaynes-Cummings-type interaction. With this coupling, the evolution of the internal atomic state provides a signature of the number state distribution of the motion. Realization of nonlinear oscillators with a trapped ion

G. Drobný, B. Hladký

We consider a trapped ion with a quantized center-of-mass motion in 2D trap potential. With external laser fields the effective (non)linear coupling of two orthogonal vibrational modes can be established via stimulated Raman transition. Nonclassical vibrational states such as squeezed states or two-mode entangled states (Schroedinger cat-like states) can be generated. When the vibrational modes are entangled with internal energy levels the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states can be prepared.

Quantum motion of trapped ions

R. Blatt, J. I. Cirac, A. S. Parkins +1 more

A single ion trapped in a harmonic potential and laser cooled at the node of a standing wave can be described in terms of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian known in quantum optics. Similar to nonclassical states of light we propose to prepare nonclassical states of the ion motion in a harmonic trap. In particular, several schemes for the preparation of Fock states are presented, and techniques for the preparation of squeezed states and coherent states of the ion motion are indicated. For an observation of these nonclassical states we propose to measure quantum collapse and revival in the population inversion of a single trapped ion.

Exact solution of a trapped ultracold ion interacting with a standing wave laser without rotating wave approximation

Mang Feng, Xiwen Zhu, Ximing Fang +2 more

In coherent state representation and in the absence of rotating wave approximation, the interaction between a standing wave laser and a trapped ultracold ion within the Lamb-Dicke limit, expanded to the second-order term of the Lamb-Dicke parameter, can be solved analytically by series expansion technique. It can be seen that, for some particular detunings, the eigenenergies of the system can be exactly obtained and the eigenfunctions, presented as series forms, are a superposition of displaced Fock states and displaced squeezed states. Making use of our solution, some particular nonclassical states could be prepared.

Preparation of multicomponent motional coherent and squeezed coherent states of a trapped ion

Jiahua Li, Wen‐Xing Yang, Peng Ju-Cun

In this paper, we present a scheme for preparation of multicomponent motional coherent and squeezed coherent states of the quantized centre of mass of an ion trapped in a one-dimensional harmonic potential and driven by two travelling-wave laser beams tuned to the nth red and blue vibrational sidebands, respectively. In addition, our scheme also provides experimental possibility for quantum state engineering.
