Abstract

The internal oscillation-mixing in TlBaCaCuO thin-film microbridge junctions has been studied at liquid nitrogen temperature. The TlBaCaCuO thin-film microbridge junctions were fabricated by the wet-etching technique. As TlBaCaCuO superconducting material is very sensitive to magnetic fields. It is crucial to use a magnetic shielding system in the experiments. In the presence of a magnetic shielding system, the authors obtained a -37 dB mW sensitivity for a TlBaCaCuO Josephson internal oscillator-mixer which is close to that of a YBaCuO Josephson internal oscillator-mixer.

Microwave Heterodyne Mixing by Step-Edge Microbridge Josephson Junctions Using YBaCuO Thin Films

Yoshito Fukumoto, Hiroshi Kajikawa, Rikuo Ogawa +1 more

Current-voltage characteristics and microwave mixing properties of step-edge microbridge Josephson junctions (SEJJs) made of YBaCuO thin films were systematically investigated. The step-edge was formed on the surface of a MgO(100) substrate employing the common photolithograph and wet-etching techniques. YBaCuO thin film was deposited by the off-axis sputtering method, and the microbridge junctions were fabricated so as to cross the step-edge. The SEJJs showed typical DC and AC characteristics which were explained by the resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model. Mixing experiments were carried out in the K-band microwave region. An intermediate frequency (IF) output with the frequency range of 20 MHz~2.0 GHz was successfully obtained.

Properties of Step-Edge Microbridge Josephson Junction Mixer Fabricated by YBaCuO Thin Film

Yoshito Fukumoto, Hiroshi Kajikawa, Rikuo Ogawa +1 more

The conversion efficiency and minimum detection power of a step-edge microbridge Josephson junction mixer (SEJJ mixer) were evaluated for both fundamental mixing and harmonic mixing. The SEJJ was fabricated by a YBaCuO thin film and all of the circuits inside the mixer were made from microstrip line circuits in order to reduce the microwave propagation losses. The conversion efficiencies (η) were -31 dB, -46 dB and -53 dB for fundamental mixing, second harmonic mixing and third harmonic mixing, respectively. The dependence of η on the harmonic number (N) was expressed as η\proptN -4.6 for N≦3. The minimum detection power (MDP) of -60 dBm (1.0 nW) was obtained in fundamental mixing, with a linear dynamic range of more than 40 dB.

Millimeter Wave Harmonic Mixing in Thin-Film YBa2Cu3O7-x Josephson Junctions

Yoshizumi Yasuoka, Takashi Nozue, Tsutomu Yamashita

Harmonic mixing characteristics in thin-film YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) Josephson junctions fabricated using photolithography were examined at the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) using 94 GHz millimeter wave radiation. As a result, a mixing signal (IF output) was obtained up to the harmonic number of 55 in harmonic mixing using the local oscillation (LO) wave as the microwave. The output strongly depended on the power of the LO and signal waves, and on the Shapiro step spacing induced by the LO wave. The IF output decreased in proportion to N -2 in the lower harmonic number region. However, the rate of decrease increased with an increase in the harmonic number.

Observation of the intrinsic noise of a thin−film microbridge Josephson junction

S. S. Pei, James E. Lukens

We have measured the intrinsic noise of a thin−film microbridge Josephson junction included as part of a closed superconducting ring. This microbridge, which was fabricated using electron beam lithography and has submicron dimensions, exhibited a noise magnitude which was in excellent agreement with that predicted for an ideal Josephson junction.

Josephson soliton oscillators in a superconducting thin film resonator

J. Holm, J. Mygind, N. F. Pedersen +3 more

Josephson soliton oscillators integrated in a resonator consisting of two closely spaced coplanar superconducting microstrips have been investigated experimentally. Pairs of long 1-D Josephson junctions with a current density of about 1000 A/cm/sup 2/ were made using the Nb-AlO/sub x/-Nb trilayer technique. Different modes of half-wave resonances in the thin-film structure impose different magnetic field configurations at the boundaries of the junctions. The DC I-V characteristic shows zero-field steps with a number of resonator-induced steps. These structures are compared to RF-induced steps generated by phase-locking of the soliton motion to an external microwave source. The two different resonant configurations identified may be interpreted as a coupling to the microwave field at the end boundary and as a more homogeneous coupling distributed over the junction length.>
