Abstract

Charge exchange cross sections for collisions of fast K + , Rb + and Sr + ions with an Na vapour were measured for collision energies ranging from 5 to 30 keV. Sr + (5s) and Sr + (4d) ions providing the first state-dependent data in this mass region. The results are compared with theoretical near-resonance predictions. The application to collinear laser spectroscopy using state-selective neutralisation is discussed.

Velocity-dependent neutralization cross sections of Ba+ ground and metastable states by Na

Ludo Vermeeren, Peter Lievens, Roger E. Silverans

A combined optical-pumping--laser-induced-fluorescence method was developed to determine the fraction of metastable-state ions in a ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$ beam. This allowed us to measure the ratio of the charge-exchange cross sections for collisions of ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$(6s) and ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$(5d) ions with a sodium vapor for impact energies ranging from 3 to 29 keV. For a collision energy of 5 keV, the ratio of the cross sections for ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$(5d $^{2}$${\mathit{D}}_{3/2}$) and ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{+}$(5d $^{2}$${\mathit{D}}_{5/2}$) was measured. All results are compared to theoretical near-resonance predictions.

Charge exchange collisions between alkaline-earth ions and alkali atoms

Ludo Vermeeren, Peter Lievens, Anita Buekenhoudt +1 more

The ratio of the charge exchange cross sections for Ba + (5d) and Ba + (6s) on Na, Rb and Cs, for Sr + (4d) and Sr + (5s) on Na and Rb, and for Ca + (3d) and Ca - (4s) on Na have been measured for ion impact energies between 0.5 keV and 30 keV. For the collisions with Na, absolute charge exchange cross section values are derived using data for the resonant process Na+Na + as a reference. The results are compared to theoretical near-resonance predictions. A method is proposed to study the polarization dependence of the neutralization cross sections for reactions involving ionic D states.

Differential charge-transfer cross sections for Na+ with Rb collisions at low energies

Teck-Ghee Lee, H. Nguyen, X. Fléchard +2 more

We report on a theoretical and experimental study of state-selective differential single-electron transfer cross sections between ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+}$ ions and $\mathrm{Rb}(5s,5p)$ atoms at collision energies of 2, 5, and 7 keV. A two-center multichannel semiclassical impact parameter close-coupling method with straight-line trajectories was used to obtain single-electron capture amplitudes. By combining with the eikonal approximation, we calculated the angular differential cross sections. These results are compared to the experimental data obtained with Rb targets cooled in a magnetic optical trap. It is shown that there is generally a good agreement between the present calculations and the experiments. In spite of the higher resolution offered from the cold target, the rapid oscillations in the differential cross sections are not resolved by the experiments.

Energy-dependent relative charge transfer cross sections of Cs++ Rb(5s, 5p)

Hai Truong Nguyen, R. Brédy, X. Fléchard +1 more

Magneto optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy is used to measure energy-dependent charge exchange cross sections in the Cs+ + Rb(5s, 5p) system over a range of projectile energies from 3.2 to 6.4 keV. The measurements are kinematically complete and yield cross sections that are differential in collision energy, scattering angle, and initial and final states.

Cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na atoms

Vlasta Horvatić, Mladen Movre, Cedomil Vadla

The cross sections for the excitation energy transfer induced by collisions with He, Ar and Na ground-state atoms have been measured. The sodium atoms in the 4D state have been produced by two-photon excitation using cw laser radiation at 578.89 nm. Within a model which takes into account collisional population and depopulation of the 4F level as well as radiative relaxation (direct or cascade) of the 3D, 4P, 4D and 4F states ending in the 3P level, the rate for the collisional transfer turns out to be related to the ratio of the steady-state populations created in 3D and 4D states. They have been determined by measuring the fluorescence intensities of the and transitions. The measurements yield the following cross section values for those processes investigated: , and , at .

Complex cross sections of spin exchange in collisions of sodium and potassium atoms in the ground state

Victor A. Kartoshkin

Complex cross sections of the spin exchange are calculated for the first time for interacting Na and K atoms based on the data on the singlet (X 1Σ+) and triplet (a 3Σ+) potentials that describe the interaction of these alkali-metal atoms in the ground state. The obtained cross sections allow one to theoretically consider the polarization transfer processes and calculate the relaxation times and the magnetic resonance frequency shifts caused by Na-K spin-exchange collisions.
