Abstract

We report on a theoretical and experimental study of state-selective differential single-electron transfer cross sections between ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+}$ ions and $\mathrm{Rb}(5s,5p)$ atoms at collision energies of 2, 5, and 7 keV. A two-center multichannel semiclassical impact parameter close-coupling method with straight-line trajectories was used to obtain single-electron capture amplitudes. By combining with the eikonal approximation, we calculated the angular differential cross sections. These results are compared to the experimental data obtained with Rb targets cooled in a magnetic optical trap. It is shown that there is generally a good agreement between the present calculations and the experiments. In spite of the higher resolution offered from the cold target, the rapid oscillations in the differential cross sections are not resolved by the experiments.

Atomic-matter-wave diffraction evidenced in low-energy Na + +Rb charge-exchange collisions

A. Leredde, A. Cassimi, X. Fléchard +3 more

Single charge transfer in low-energy ${\mathrm{Na}}^{+}+{}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}(5s,5p)$ collisions is investigated using magneto-optically trapped Rb atoms and high-resolution recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the recoil-ion momentum provides accurate relative cross sections for the active channels along with their associated distributions in projectile scattering angle. The measurements are accompanied by molecular close-coupling calculations. The predicted diffractionlike oscillations in angular distributions are clearly resolved by the experiment. An excellent agreement is found between the present molecular calculations and the experimental data.

Charge transfer and association of Na + with 87 Rb atoms from extremely low to intermediate energies

Lisong Yan, L. Liu, Yong Wu +3 more

The nonradiative charge-transfer processes in Na${}^{+}$+${}^{87}$Rb(5$s$) collisions have been investigated by using the quantum-mechanical molecular-orbital close-coupling method and the two-center atomic-orbital close-coupling method for the energy range of 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$--5 and 0.3--100 keV/u, respectively. The radiative charge-transfer, radiative-decay, and radiative-association processes have been investigated by using the fully quantum, optical-potential, and semiclassical methods for the energy range of 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}18}$--0.2 eV/u. The nonradiative charge-transfer processes dominate the collisions for energies above 0.2 eV/u and radiative-decay processes dominate in the lower-energy region. At the very low collision energies of 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}18}$--10${}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ eV/u, the radiative-association process is more important than the radiative charge-transfer process. Most importantly, it is found that the radiative cross sections exhibit Langevin behavior as ${E}^{\ensuremath{-}1/2}$ for energies less than 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ eV/u.

Spin-exchange cross section for a 3He+ ion incident on a Rb atom

Yasushi Arimoto, NORIYUKI SHIMAKURA, Tamio Yamagata +2 more

Spin-exchange cross sections between a ${}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ ion and a Rb atom were calculated in a ${}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ impact-energy range from 0.01 to 10 keV/amu by the semiclassical close-coupling method based on the molecular-orbital expansion. The previous calculation in which only two states of the ${}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ $(1s{ }^{2}S)+\mathrm{Rb}(5s{ }^{2}S)$ system were taken into account overestimated the experimental result at 6.33 keV/amu by orders of magnitudes, whereas the present calculation, which allowed the target excitation and electron transfer, showed a rough agreement with the experimental result. In view of the application, the spin-exchange cross sections larger than ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}14} {\mathrm{cm}}^{2},$ predicted at ${}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ impact energies lower than 0.3 keV/amu will hopefully provide a powerful tool for producing a highly polarized ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ ion beam.

Charge exchange collisions between alkaline-earth ions and alkali atoms

Ludo Vermeeren, Peter Lievens, Anita Buekenhoudt +1 more

The ratio of the charge exchange cross sections for Ba + (5d) and Ba + (6s) on Na, Rb and Cs, for Sr + (4d) and Sr + (5s) on Na and Rb, and for Ca + (3d) and Ca - (4s) on Na have been measured for ion impact energies between 0.5 keV and 30 keV. For the collisions with Na, absolute charge exchange cross section values are derived using data for the resonant process Na+Na + as a reference. The results are compared to theoretical near-resonance predictions. A method is proposed to study the polarization dependence of the neutralization cross sections for reactions involving ionic D states.

Angle-differential and momentum-transfer cross sections for e−+Rb, Cs, and Fr collisions at low energies: 3Fo shape resonances in Rb−, Cs−, and Fr− ions

Cristian Bahrim, Uwe Thumm

Based on the relativistic Dirac R-matrix method, we calculate angle-dependent and momentum-transfer cross sections for electron scattering by Rb, Cs, and Fr atoms at impact energies below 3 eV. Our results for momentum transfer for ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}+\mathrm{Rb}$ and Cs collisions are compared with available data from swarm experiments. We find clear evidence for a ${\mathrm{Cs}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{(}^{3}{F}^{o})$ shape resonance at 1.528 eV, in excellent agreement with angle-dependent electron-scattering measurements. We analyze and compare the ${}^{3}{F}^{o}$ shape resonance in ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}+\mathrm{Rb},$ Cs, and Fr elastic collisions.

Velocity dependence of neutralisation cross sections in collisions of ground state K+, Rb+, Sr+and metastable Sr+(4d) ions with Na atoms

Ludo Vermeeren, Peter De Bisschop, Peter Lievens +1 more

Charge exchange cross sections for collisions of fast K + , Rb + and Sr + ions with an Na vapour were measured for collision energies ranging from 5 to 30 keV. Sr + (5s) and Sr + (4d) ions providing the first state-dependent data in this mass region. The results are compared with theoretical near-resonance predictions. The application to collinear laser spectroscopy using state-selective neutralisation is discussed.
