Spatial-multimode broadband squeezing in both polarization components of an electromagnetic field

Abstract

The three-wave parametric down-conversion in an uniaxial crystal with type-II phase matching is considered. It is established that by these conditions the spatial-multimode broadband squeezed states of light are generated with two orthogonal elliptical polarizations. The eigen-polarization-vectors of multimode squeezed light on the entry and at the exit of the crystal are found. It is shown that the homodyne reception of such light can reduce the photodetection noise of the surface current density below the shot noise in some time and space regions for both eigen-polarization-vectors of light. The frequency and spatial-frequency spectrum of the current density for both eigen-polarization-vectors is calculated. A clear explanation of multimode squeezing for both polarizations is given.

Spatial behavior of nonclassic light

Mikhail I. Kolobov

Summary form only given. It has previously been shown that a traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier can generate multimode squeezed states of light. Homodyne detection of multimode squeezed light, under certain physical conditions, results in sub-Poissonian statistics of photons not only in time but also in the transverse plane of the light beam. Of particular relevance to applications is a situation when the cross section of the light beam contains several nonoverlapping areas with sub-Poissonian statistics of photons within each of them. Under photodetection of such a beam of light, several sub-shot-noise photocurrents can be produced according to the number of independent areas with sub-Poissonian statistics. This is in drastic contrast to the case of a single-mode sub-Poissonian light beam, where any attempt to collect light only from a part of the beam deteriorates the degree of shot-noise reduction. This property of multimode squeezed light opens a range of new interesting applications in optical imaging, optical parallel processing of information, parallel computing, and many other phenomena where it is desirable to have the regular statistics of photons across the transverse plane of the electromagnetic wave. We describe the application of multimode squeezed light in sub-shot-noise microscopy, noiseless amplifications of optical images, and optical imaging. We also consider the possibility of improving the resolution in optical imaging and microscopy beyond the Rayleigh limit via multimode squeezed light.

Multimode single-pass spatio-temporal squeezing

Luca La Volpe, Syamsundar De, Tiphaine Kouadou +5 more

We present a single-pass source of broadband multimode squeezed light with potential application in quantum information and quantum metrology. The source is based on a type I parametric down-conversion (PDC) process inside a bulk nonlinear crystal in a non-collinear configuration. The generated squeezed light exhibits a spatio-temporal multimode behavior that is probed using a homodyne measurement with a local oscillator shaped both spatially and temporally. Finally we follow a covariance matrix based approach to reveal the distribution of the squeezing among several independent temporal and spatial modes. This unambiguously validates the multimode feature of our source.

Squeezed states of light and photon-noise-free control of light wavefront

I. V. Sokolov

This paper provides a simple physical consideration of a new type of squeezed state of light: space-time squeezed state. As it was shown recently, spatial-multimode broadband squeezed light can generate (by homodyne detection) photon counting statistics that are regular not only in time, but also in the plane of observation. A possible advantage of application of space-time squeezed light in a number of areas of quantum optics (i.e., low-noise generation, detection of optical images, Fourier optics, and holography) is discussed from an elementary point of view.

Effect of group-velocity dispersion on the generation of multimode pulsed squeezed light in a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator

Valentin Averchenko, Danil Malyshev, K. S. Tikhonov

Abstract Parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal is a widely employed technique for generating quadrature squeezed light with multiple modes, which finds applications in quantum metrology, quantum information and communication. Here we study the generation of temporally multimode femtosecond pulsed squeezed light in a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) operating below the oscillation threshold, while considering the presence of non-compensated intracavity group-velocity dispersion. Based on the developed time-domain model of the system, we show that the dispersion results in mode-dependent detuning of the broadband supermodes of the pulsed parametric process from the cavity resonance due to temporal Gouy phase, as well as linear coupling between these supermodes. With perturbation theory up to the second order in the coupling coefficients between modes, we obtained a solution for the amplitudes of multiple supermodes given an arbitrary sub-threshold pump level. The dispersion affects the quantum state of the supermodes by influencing their squeezing level and the rotation of the squeezing ellipse. It also affects the entanglement among the supermodes, leading to reduced suppression of shot noise level as measured in the balanced homodyne detection scheme. Furthermore, our study highlights the potential of SPOPO with group-velocity dispersion as a testbench for experimental investigations of multimode effects in linearly evanescent coupled parametric oscillators.

Generation and Direct Detection of Broadband Mesoscopic Polarization-Squeezed Vacuum

T. Sh. Iskhakov, Maria V. Chekhova, Gerd Leuchs

Using a traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier with two orthogonally oriented type-I BBO crystals pumped by picosecond pulses, we generate vertically and horizontally polarized squeezed vacuum states within a broad frequency-angular range. Depending on the phase between these states, fluctuations in one or another Stokes parameter are suppressed below the shot-noise limit. Because of the large number of photon pairs produced, no local oscillator is required, and 3 dB squeezing is observed by means of direct detection.
