Abstract

The effect of squeezed vacuum input on the optical bistable behavior of a system of N three-level atoms which are simultaneously coupled to a coherent pump field and a squeezed vacuum input is investigated. It is shown that the squeezed vacuum will significantly increase the range of the optical bistability, and the bistability can be controlled by the squeezing photon number and the strength of two-photon correlation.

Effect of a squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability

János A. Bergou, D. Zhao

We discuss the optical bistable behavior of a system of N two-level atoms pumped by a coherent input field and coupled to a squeezed vacuum field by treating the optical bistability of such a system as an input-output problem. We consider the equation of motion for atomic dipole moments, coupled to the cavity field and the squeezed vacuum, and the boundary condition connecting the input and output fields with the atomic lowering operator. A simple analytical expression for the influence of the squeezed vacuum input on the bistable behavior of the output field is derived by this method. The results indicate a strong influence of the squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability. The squeezed (stretched) vacuum input field tends to increase (decrease) the range of optical bistability.

We discuss the optical bistable behavior of a system of N V-type three-level atoms pumped by a coherent input field and coupled to a squeezed vacuum field by treating the optical bistability of such a system as an input-output problem. It is shown that bistability can be realized due to the squeezed vacuum input.

Optical Multistability from a Squeezed Vacuum in the Presence of Quantum Interference

Chunguang Du, Shiqun Li

The effect of a squeezed vacuum on the optical bistable and multistable behaviour of a system of N three-level atoms is investigated, where the quantum interference between the atomic transition paths is considered. It is shown that the squeezed vacuum can profoundly affect the output field of this system. A strong squeezed vacuum can lead to multistable behaviour, even in the case where the cooperation parameter C is so small that the input–output relationship curve is monotone in the absence of the squeezed vacuum. The optical multistability is most significant when the quantum interference is perfect. The bistability and multistability can be controlled by the squeezing photon number and the strength of the two-photon correlation.

Squeezed-vacuum-induced optical tristability in an atom-cavity system

Jiahui Ning, Cunjin Liu, Min Xie +3 more

In this paper we investigate the model of $N$ two-level atoms coupled to a squeezed vacuum inside a coherently driven cavity. By a linear stability analysis in the semiclassical description, we find that the optical tristability emerges in our system owing to the presence of the squeezed vacuum. Moreover, the transition among monostable, bistable, and tristable states can be realized by manipulating the squeezing phase or the squeezing strength of the squeezed vacuum. We also show the signatures of quantum tristability by using the $Q$ function and quantum trajectory methods for the situation of a single atom and low cavity photon number. Our paper offers a way to realize optical tristability in a two-level atomic system.

Optical bistability of a composite system induced by a broadband squeezed vacuum

Luo Jin-Ming, Jiahua Li

A composite system consisting of a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) and N two-level atoms interacting with a broadband squeezed vacuum (SV) centred at frequency ωs and an input monochromatic pumping field with a frequency ωp is analysed. The corresponding explicit analytical steady-state solutions in the central mode ωp = ωs are derived and the result displays optical bistability (OB). In addition, the influence of the broadband SV on the bistable behaviour is analysed in detail.

Interaction between Two-Level Atoms and a Squeezed Vacuum in a Cavity: Effect on the Mean Photon Number

C. Cabrillo, S. Swain

The interaction between a squeezed vacuum and a two-level atom coupled to a cavity mode is studied via its influence on the intracavity photon number, the simplest measurable quantity. When the system is driven by a coherent field a remarkable sensitivity to the relative phase between the driving field and the squeezed vacuum appears. The effect is very sensible to the excess of two-photon correlation between a squeezed vacuum and a maximally correlated classical field. The possibility of an experimental demonstration of the effect is established by means of numerical calculations corresponding to a slight modification of an experiment previously reported in the literature.
