Abstract

A composite system consisting of a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) and N two-level atoms interacting with a broadband squeezed vacuum (SV) centred at frequency ωs and an input monochromatic pumping field with a frequency ωp is analysed. The corresponding explicit analytical steady-state solutions in the central mode ωp = ωs are derived and the result displays optical bistability (OB). In addition, the influence of the broadband SV on the bistable behaviour is analysed in detail.

Optical bistability in sideband output modes induced by a squeezed vacuum

Leonardo Paulo Maia, Gilberto Aparecido Prataviera, Salomon Sylvain Mizrahi

We consider $N$ two-level atoms in a ring cavity interacting with a broadband squeezed vacuum centered at frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{s}$ and an input monochromatic driving field at frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$. We show that, besides the central mode (at $\ensuremath{\omega}$), an infinity of sideband modes are produced at the output, with frequencies shifted from $\ensuremath{\omega}$ by multiples of $2(\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{s})$. We analyze the optical bistability of the two nearest sideband modes, red shifted and blue shifted.

Bistable behavior in a system of an optical parametric oscillator coupling withNtwo-level atoms

Min Xiao, Shaozheng Jin

We consider a composite system consisting of a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) and a set of N homogeneously broadened two-level atoms. When the atoms are on or near resonance with the subharmonic-frequency field generated through the frequency down-conversion process, bistability appears in the intracavity field near the DOPO threshold. The bistability region will decrease as the detuning between the atomic transition frequency and the frequency of the subharmonic field increases. When the detuning becomes large enough, the atoms decouple from the cavity field and the system behaves like a normal DOPO. There are several features distinguishing this bistable behavior from the usual atomic optical bistability occurring with atoms in an optical cavity driven by an external field.

Effect of a squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability

János A. Bergou, D. Zhao

We discuss the optical bistable behavior of a system of N two-level atoms pumped by a coherent input field and coupled to a squeezed vacuum field by treating the optical bistability of such a system as an input-output problem. We consider the equation of motion for atomic dipole moments, coupled to the cavity field and the squeezed vacuum, and the boundary condition connecting the input and output fields with the atomic lowering operator. A simple analytical expression for the influence of the squeezed vacuum input on the bistable behavior of the output field is derived by this method. The results indicate a strong influence of the squeezed vacuum input on optical bistability. The squeezed (stretched) vacuum input field tends to increase (decrease) the range of optical bistability.

Three-level atoms inside a degenerate optical parametric oscillator: Steady-state behaviors

F. Montes, Min Xiao

We study a composite system consisting of N three-level \ensuremath{\Lambda}-type atoms and a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO). The standard DOPO threshold is modified by the presence of the three-level atoms. Bistability (in the intracavity field intensity versus pumping intensity for the DOPO) appears for certain atomic detunings and coupling field strengths between the intracavity field and one of the atomic transitions. The effects of the coupling field (for the auxiliary transition in the three-level atomic system) are discussed. The susceptibility of the three-level atoms is calculated for the lower and upper branches of the bistable curve. Both analytical (for certain special cases) and numerical (for more general cases) results are presented.

Generalized dispersion relations and optical bistability in squeezed vacua

R. Bullough, Hanan Ali Batarfi, Saad S. M. Hassan +2 more

We derive c-number Bloch-Maxwell (B-M) type equations from a quantum theory for 2-level atoms occupying a macroscopic slab-like region V of width L stimulated by a coherent-state electromagnetic field of radial frequency (omega) plus a broad-band correlated squeezed vacuum field with carrier frequency (omega) p. The squeezed vacuum field is in principle of arbitrary 3-dimensional geometry including geometries created by an optical parametric oscillator. The c-number spatially dependent B-M equations are solved self-consistently and 'exactly' in terms of a nonlinear dispersive refractive index m((omega) ) while the slab V acts, also self-consistently, as a natural Fabry-Perot cavity of finite spacing L. Very preliminary results for optical bistability in the squeezed vacuum and more exact results for anomalous dispersion and absorption in the squeezed vacuum in linearized approximation are reported. Finally we compute the effect of the dielectric on the free-field modes of the squeezed vacuum.

Optical spectra from a degenerate optical parametric oscillator coupling withNtwo-level atoms

Shaozheng Jin, Min Xiao

We study transmitted optical spectra from a realistic system which consists of a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) and N two-level atoms. Optical bistability appears when parameters are suitable. Below the modified threshold of the DOPO (lower turning point of the bistable curve), the coherent intensity is always zero at the lower branch, which allows us to describe this system with a set of linear differential equations. By transforming the field and atomic variables into corresponding quadratures, we find that, for the resonance case, one atomic quadrature will only couple to one field quadrature. By separating these two quadratures, we are able to study the effects due to squeezed and unsqueezed quadratures on the atoms. The optical and atomic spectra of this system are obtained, analytically, for arbitrary coupling strength and cavity linewidth.
