Abstract

Colloid CdSe quantum dots have been synthesized and their photonic application as a two-wave mixing medium has been demonstrated. Large energy transfer from a strong pump beam to a weak signal beam has been observed and possible application in group velocity manipulation has been discussed.

Absorption saturation and self-action processes under resonant excitation of the basic exciton transition in CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots

The revealed absorption saturation and Fresnel diffraction of ultrashort laser pulses under resonant excitation of the basic exciton transition in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (a strongly absorbing colloidal solution) have been explained by the processes of filling of states of a two-level system with the excited-state lifetime dependent on the light intensity and self-diffraction of the laser beam due to the formation of the transparency channel and the induced diaphragm.

Phase-modulation-induced two-wave mixing in semiconductors

Robert Frey, J. Frey, Christos Flytzanis

Two-wave mixing amplification of a weak probe beam interfering with a powerful pump beam of the same linear polarization is demonstrated when the probe beam enters the semiconductor sample before the pump pulse. This mixing of two beams of the same frequency is made possible by the difference between self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation, which modify differently the instantaneous frequencies of both beams. Net gain coefficients up to 5.5 cm (-1) are obtained for experiments performed in CdTe. Theoretical calculations quantitatively confirm this interpretation and predict much higher gain for more resonant configurations or higher pump energies, making this process of potential interest for optical processing.

Spatially structured transparency and transfer of optical vortices via four-wave mixing in a quantum-dot nanostructure

Rahmatullah Rahmatullah, Muqaddar Abbas, Ziauddin Ziauddin +1 more

We propose a scheme to generate structured light using a medium consisting of semiconductor quantum dots via four-wave mixing (FWM). We consider a four-level quantum-dot structure where two strong electromagnetic fields couple upper-level biexciton transitions, whereas a weak field is applied to one of the ground-level exciton transitions. A weak signal field is generated, corresponding to a second ground-level exciton transition; thus the overall configuration transforms into a closed-loop diamond-type shape. To realize a spatially dependent modulating quantum-dot medium, we consider strong coupling fields as structured lights and investigate different regions of spatially structured electromagnetically induced transparency via absorption of the generated signal field. The azimuthal phase-dependent modulation of the absorption profile of the generated signal field is the key factor behind the creation of structured light. In addition, we also demonstrate transfer of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the control beam to the generated beam through the FWM process and study the effect of phase mismatch on efficiency of the OAM transfer.

Theory Of Enhanced Optical Nonlinearities In Quantum Dots

A discussion of the exciton regime of quantum dots is presented. We predict the possibility of enhancement of the optical nonlinearities due to exciton quantization. Applications to the dynamic Stark effect and two-wave mixing processes are described.
