Abstract

We report the first direct experimental realization of the quantum $\ensuremath{\delta}$-kicked rotor. Our system consists of a dilute sample of ultracold sodium atoms in a periodic standing wave of near-resonant light that is pulsed on periodically in time to approximate a series of delta functions. Momentum spread of the atoms increases diffusively with every pulse until the "quantum break time" after which exponentially localized distributions are observed. Quantum resonances are found for specific values of the pulse period.

Quantum Delta-Kicked Rotor: Experimental Observation of Decoherence

H. Ammann, R. Gray, I. Shvarchuck +1 more

We report on the experimental observation of environment induced decoherence in the quantum delta-kicked rotor. Ultracold cesium atoms are subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. Spontaneous scattering of photons destroys dynamical localization thereby giving rise to a quantum diffusion, which approaches the classical diffusion with an increasing degree of decoherence. This tendency is enhanced by a stronger stochasticity in the underlying classical system. A comparison with theoretical predictions is presented.

An experimental realization of the quantum -kicked rotor

Mark G. Raizen, F L Moore, J C Robinson +2 more

We study experimentally quantum effects in atomic motion for a classically chaotic regime. A standing wave is pulsed on periodically in time, and the resulting atomic momentum is measured. Momentum grows diffusively until the quantum break time, after which dynamical localization is observed. Quantum resonances are observed for certain pulse durations.

Experimental investigation of early-time diffusion in the quantum kicked rotor using a Bose-Einstein condensate

G. J. Duffy, A. S. Parkins, T. Müller +3 more

We report measurements of the early-time momentum diffusion for the atom-optical delta-kicked rotor. In this experiment a Bose-Einstein condensate provides a source of ultracold atoms with an ultranarrow initial momentum distribution, which is then subjected to periodic pulses (or "kicks") using an intense far-detuned optical standing wave. We characterize the effect of varying the effective Planck's constant for the system, while keeping all other parameters fixed. The observed behavior includes both quantum resonances (ballistic energy growth) and antiresonances (re-establishment of the initial state). Our experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Experimental observation of dynamical localization and decoherence in the atomic -kicked rotor

H. Ammann, R. Gray, Nelson L Christensen +1 more

We experimentally investigate decoherence by spontaneous emission in the quantum delta kicked rotor. Caesium atoms in a magneto-optic trap are initially cooled, and then subjected to a pulsed standing wave of near resonant light. As the detuning from the atomic transition is varied, we observe a change in the momentum diffusion after the quantum break time.

Measurements of Diffusion Resonances for the Atom Optics Quantum Kicked Rotor

We present experimental observations of diffusion resonances for the quantum kicked rotor with weak decoherence. Cold caesium atoms are subject to a pulsed standing wave of near-resonant light, with spontaneous emission providing environmental coupling. The mean energy as a function of the pulse period is determined during the late-time diffusion regime for a constant probability of spontaneous emission per unit time. Structure in the late-time energy is seen to increase with physical kicking strength. The observed structure is related to Shepelyansky's predictions of the initial quantum diffusion rates.
