Superconducting microbridges and arrays

The current‐voltage characteristics and Josephson radiation have been studied for a number of indium bridges as a function of temperatures. Our results show strong deviations from the predictions of the RSJ model, even in the temperature regime where the bridge size is smaller than the coherence length. We ascribe this to non‐equilibrium effects in the around the microbridge. In order to improve the applicability of the Josephson effect, we have investigated coherent arrays of 2, 4 and 10 microbridges. The 10 microbridge array is a novel design which allows the bridges to be parallel‐biased at dc (equal voltages) and series‐biased at 9 GHz (high output impedance).

Microwave wideband tunable oscillators using coherent arrays of Josephson junctions

Coherent microwave radiation from arrays containing up to 100 indium microbridges has been directly detected. As expected the power scales as N2and the linewidth as 1/N for an array containing N junctions. Design criteria and fabrication methods for these arrays are discussed.

ENHANCED JOSEPHSON RADIATION AND LINEWIDTH-NARROWING OF SUPERCONDUCTING MICROBRIDGES IN A RESONANT CAVITY

M. B. Stern, William G. Howard, Y. H. Kao

Josephson radiation emitted from superconducting microbridges and coupled two-bridge junctions has been investigated at microwave frequencies. The radiation linewidth Ɗf and total radiation power P are found to vary with the output coupling controlled by a tuning stub in the cavity, indicating feedback-induced effects due to the radiation fields. We have found (Ɗf)min ~ 900 kHz, Pmax ~ 0.9 x 10-12 W for the single microbridge and (Ɗf)min ~ 60 kHz, Pmax ~ 5 x 10-12 W for the coupled bridges. The enhancement of radiated power and line-narrowing in the coupled bridges are attributed to coherent behaviour of the junctions.
