Susceptibility of Ising Ferromagnet of Restricted Dimensionality

Abstract

The susceptibility of the restricted-dimensional (one- or two-dimensional-like) Ising model is analyzed by means of the high temperature series expansion. The exchange interaction in a chain (or plane), and inter chains (or planes) are J and λ J , respectively. The first eight terms in the susceptibility series are explicitly obtained. The critical temperature T c and the critical exponent γ are obtained as a function of λ. It is found that the susceptibility shows restricted-dimensional behavior at high temperature ( T ≫ T c ), and shows three-dimensional behavior in the very vicinity of the critical temperature (\(T{\gtrsim}T_{\text{c}}\)) for small λ.

High Temperature Series Expansion of the Susceptibility of the d-Dimensional Random Ising Model

Shigeru Okamoto, T. Oguchi, Yohtaro Ueno

The critical temperatures of the random mixtures are investigated in the quenched site and bond Ising model with the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions by the high-temperature series expansion of the susceptibility for the d-dimensional simple hypercubical lattices. The critical exponent γ for the three-dimensional Ising model

David S. Gaunt, M F Sykes

Estimates for the critical exponent gamma for the initial susceptibility of the three-dimensional spin- 1 / 2 Ising model are summarised. There is a discrepancy between estimates based on high-temperature series expansions and those obtained using renormalisation group theory. High-temperature series estimates for gamma are reviewed and re-examined using some new data. It is tentatively concluded that a small discrepancy still appears to exist and that further work is needed to resolve it.

Critical Behavior of the Spin System with Anisotropic Exchange Interaction. II. Two-Dimensional Lattice

Takuma Ishikawa, Takehiko Oguchi

The phase transition for the spin systems described by the Hamiltonian H =-2 J ∑ < i , j > (ξ S i x S j x +η S i y S j y + S i z S j z )- g µ H ∑ i S i z is studied by means of the high-temperature series expansion of the zero field susceptibility. The first five terms in the susceptibility series are explicitly obtained for the two-dimensional square lattice in the cases of (i) 0≤ξ≤1, η=0 and (ii) 0≤ξ=η≤1. The critical temperature T c and the critical exponent γ (susceptibility) are obtained as functions of the spin S and the anisotropy parameter ξ. The critical temperature has a finite value in the XY model (ξ=1, η=0) as well as the Heisenberg model (ξ=η=1). The simple formulae expressing T c and γ valid for arbitrary S and ξ are proposed.

Series expansions for the zero-temperature transverse Ising model

L.G. Marland

Series expansions are presented for the magnetisation, susceptibility, magnetic field derivatives of the susceptibility and 'specific heat' of the zero-temperature transverse Ising model. Coefficients in these series have been calculated to tenth order in lambda 2 (where lambda is the transverse field) for the linear chain, to eighth order for the square lattice and to seventh order for the triangular lattice. These series yield estimates of the low-temperature critical exponents alpha ', beta ', gamma ' and Delta ' of the two- and three-dimensional Ising models. They provide good evidence for the symmetry of exponents above and below the critical point, e.g. gamma '= gamma .

Critical behaviour of two Ising models with four-spin interactions

J. Oitmaa, R. W. Gibberd

Two two-dimensional Ising models with two- and four-spin interactions are studied. Evidence from high temperature series expansions suggests that the susceptibility exponent gamma remains constant at 1.75, independent of J 4 , the strength of the four- spin interaction. This is in agreement with the general 'universality' hypothesis. Mean field theory predicts that for J 4 large enough the transition becomes first-order, but we find no evidence for this from the series expansions.

Some magnetic properties of the ising model

D.M. Burley

Two properties of the Ising model are considered. Firstly, by extrapolating appropriate series expansions, the spontaneous magnetization of a ferromagnet for three-dimensional lattices is obtained. From the results accurate values for the critical temperature are found. Secondly, the high temperature susceptibility of an antiferromagnet is derived from the approximation of Kikuchi. The resulting susceptibility curves show that for loose-packed lattices a maximum value occurs at a temperature slightly above the critical point, while for the close-packed lattices no such effect is obtained.
