Abstract

Based on an analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in microfiber knot resonators with a two-ring parallel connection structure, a wide bandwidth and zero-dispersion slow-light waveguide is proposed. The EIT-like transmission spectrum with the variation of wavelengths for different coupling coefficients is numerical simulated. By appropriately adjusting the coupling coefficients of the two knot rings, a group time delay of about 72.4 ps with a flat wavelength bandwidth of about 82.7 pm and a full width at half-maximum of about 228 pm at one of the induced transparency windows is achieved theoretically. And the group time delay dispersion at the same induced transparency window nearly reaches to zero with a wavelength bandwidth of about 82.7 pm.

Slow light and fast light in microfiber double-knot resonator with a parallel structure

Yiping Xu, Liyong Ren, Chengju Ma +2 more

Based on the theoretical model of a microfiber double-knot resonator with a parallel structure, numerical simulations on the transmission spectrum, the phase, and the group time delay of the resonator as a function of wavelengths are given. We find that with this kind of resonator both slow light and fast light can be obtained at different resonant wavelengths. Experimentally, such a kind of microfiber resonator was fabricated successfully. The transmission spectrum of the fabricated resonator is well consistent with the theoretical simulation. A slow-light delay of about 38 ps and a fast-light advance of about 40 ps are demonstrated at different wavelengths, which might benefit the resonator to the applications in data delay lines, optical buffers, and optical memories.

Observation of EIT like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator

Yundong Zhang, Changqiu Yu, Kaiyang Wang +1 more

We demonstrate the electromagnetically induced transparency like spectrum in the nested fiber ring resonator with the transfer matrix theory; the system consists of two rings and two waveguides which are connected by four couplers. The simulation results show that the tunable group delay can be realized by changing the coupling coefficients. At transmission window, the transmittance can achieve approximately 97.2% with the 0.05ns group delay. Through tuning the coupling coefficients, the group delay can vary from 0.05ns to -21.23ns and the bandwidth of the transparency window can vary from 37MHz to 15MHz.The ability for realizing such transparency resonance and for controlling the group delay or the bandwidth of such resonance is important for applications such as optical switching, as well as tunable bandwidth filter applications.

Tunable fast and slow light based on ring resonators and Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Yundong Zhang, Huaiyin Su, Yongfeng Wu +3 more

We theoretically demonstrate the transmittion spectra and dispersion characteristics based on the electromagnetically induced transparency like effect in the nested fiber double-ring resonator with the transfer matrix theory; the system which are connected by three directional couplers consists of two inner rings, one outer ring and one straight waveguide. The simulation results show that the tunable group delay can be realized by changing the coupling coefficients. In the NDRR coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer system, we obtained fast light and slow light simultaneously. By adjusting appropriate parameters, we can archive flat band group delay curve that has a profound application in optical interferometer, optical buffer, optical filter, optical modulator, dynamic or static optical sensing field.

Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Its Slow Light Application Based on a Guided-Mode Resonance Grating Cascade Structure

Guofeng Li, Junbo Yang, Zhaojian Zhang +5 more

In recent years, the achievement of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect based on the guided-mode resonance (GMR) effect has attracted extensive attention. However, few works have achieved a double EIT-like effect using this method. In this paper, we numerically achieve a double EIT-like effect in a GMR system with a three-layer silicon nitride waveguide grating structure (WGS), using the multi-level atomic system model for theoretical explanation. In terms of slow light performance, the corresponding two delay times reach 22.59 ps and 8.43 ps, respectively. We also investigate the influence of wavelength detuning of different GMR modes on the transparent window and slow light performance. Furthermore, a wide-band flat-top transparent window was also achieved by appropriately adjusting the wavelength detuning between GMR modes. These results indicate that the EIT-like effect in the WGS has potential application prospects in low-loss slow optical devices, optical sensing, and optical communications.

Electromagnetically induced transparency-like effect in microring-Bragg gratings based coupling resonant system

Zecen Zhang, Geok Ing Ng, Ting Hu +5 more

An all-pass microring-Bragg gratings (APMR-BG) based coupling resonant system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to generate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission for the first time. The coupling between two light path ways in the micro-ring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) resonator formed by two sections of Bragg gratings gives rise to the EIT-like spectrum. This system has the advantage of a small footprint consisting of only one microring resonator and one bus waveguide with Bragg gratings. It also has a large fabrication tolerance as the overlap requirement between the resonance wavelengths of the microring and the F-P resonator is more relaxed. The two most important properties of the EIT-like transmission namely the insertion loss (IL) and the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) have been analytically investigated by utilizing the specially developed model based on the transfer matrix method. The APMR-BG based coupling resonant system was fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The EIT-like transmission with an extinction ratio (ER) of 12 dB, a FWHM of 0.077 nm and a quality factor (Q factor) of 20200 was achieved, which agree well with the simulated results based on our numerical model. A slow light with a group delay of 38 ps was also obtained.

Electromagnetically induced transparency analogue and slow light effect in an asymmetric plasma waveguide

Guoqiang Wei, Qiuyue Nie, Zhonglin Zhang +4 more

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), characterised by strong dispersion and a narrow transparency window, holds great potential for developing slow light devices in communications. However, in the GHz regime, achieving a simple EIT structure with high group delay and tunability remains challenging. This paper reports an asymmetric plasma waveguide capable of producing EIT analogues, as demonstrated by finite element method simulations and a two-oscillator model (TOM). The asymmetric plasma waveguide consists of a plasma–dielectric–plasma structure with non-uniformly sized teeth. The results indicate that the EIT analogue is attributed to detuning induced by the difference in tooth size. Specifically, the detuning creates an interference band, which governs the interaction between two bright modes (i.e. resonance modes in the two teeth). The TOM aligns excellently with numerical simulations. Notably, unlike previous works, the TOM is also analysed from a fundamental energy perspective. The operating frequency can be easily tuned by adjusting plasma frequencies. The maximum group delay can reach 8.5 ns. Our study advances the understanding of the EIT phenomenon in slot waveguides with asymmetric resonators and may offer a new platform for developing actively tunable microwave slow-light devices.
