Abstract

Simultaneous entanglement in spin and space-time of a two-photon quantum state generated in type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion is demonstrated by the observation of quantum interference with 98% visibility in simple beam-splitter (Hanburry Brown-Twiss) anticorrelation and quantum beating experiments. The cancellation of two-photon probability amplitudes as a result of this double entanglement allow us to demonstrate two different types of Bell's inequality violations in one experimental setup.

Simultaneous entanglement in spin and space-time of a two-photon quantum state generated in type-2 spontaneous parametric down-conversion is demonstrated by the observation of quantum interference with 98% visibility in a simple beam-splitter (Hanburry Brown-Twiss) anticorrelation experiment. Experimental tests of Bell’s inequalities based on space-time and spin variables

T. B. Pittman, Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko +1 more

Coincidence detections are measured between the output ports of a beam splitter whose input is an orthogonally polarized two-photon state produced in type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. When the delays between the two optical paths leading to each detector are varied by two spatially separated Pockel cells, a two-photon interference effect is seen that highlights a simultaneous entanglement in both spin and space-time variables. In contrast to all previous experimental tests of Bell's in- equalities, which have utilized states entangled with respect to only one type of observable, the double entanglement realized here allows the demonstration of two different types of Bell inequality violations in one experimental setup.

Four-photon entanglement from down-conversion

Harald Weinfurter, Marek Żukowski

Double-pair emission from type-II parametric down-conversion results in a highly entangled four-photon state. Due to interference, which is similar to bunching from thermal emission, this state is not simply a product of two pairs. The observation of this state can be achieved by splitting the two emission modes at beam splitters and subsequent detection of a photon in each output. Here we describe the features of this state and construct a Bell-type inequality, which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a four-photon test of local realistic hidden variable theories.

Violation of Bell’s Inequality with Photons from Independent Sources

T. B. Pittman, J. D. Franson

We report a violation of Bell's inequality using one photon from a parametric down-conversion source and a second photon from an attenuated laser beam. The two photons were entangled at a beam splitter using the postselection technique of Shih and Alley [Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2921 (1988)]]. A quantum interference pattern with a visibility of 91% was obtained using the photons from these independent sources, as compared with a visibility of 99.4% using two photons from a central parametric down-conversion source.

Observation of quantum beating in a simple beam-splitting experiment: Two-particle entanglement in spin and space-time

Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko

A single light beam, generated by type-II down-conversion, is split by a beam splitter. When a set of quartz plates is inserted into the single beam, the coincidence counting rate between the split beams exhibits a 100% frequency-beating modulation. This nonclassical phenomena is a manifestation of a two-photon entangled state in which the two-particle state is entangled simultaneously in spin and space-time.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm experiment and Bell inequality violation using Type 2 parametric down conversion

Thomas E. Kiess, Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko +1 more

We report a new two-photon polarization correlation experiment for realizing the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm (EPRB) state and for testing Bell-type inequalities. We use the pair of orthogonally-polarized light quanta generated in Type 2 parametric down conversion. Using 1 nm interference filters in front of our detectors, we observe from the output of a 0.5mm beta - BaB2O4 (BBO) crystal the EPRB correlations in coincidence counts, and measure an associated Bell inequality violation of 22 standard deviations. The quantum state of the photon pair is a polarization analog of the spin-1/2 singlet state.
