Abstract

Integrated nonlinear optical devices for the generation of twin photon beams are expected to be a key element for the development of quantum information techniques. This paper presents a quantum theory analysis of counterpropagating twin photon generation (CPTPG) by spontaneous parametric downconversion. Full descriptions of the quantum states of the twin photon beams having unique features are obtained in the Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures. Mathematical expressions useful for device design and quantitative prediction of the performances, such as efficiency, wavelength spectrum and bandwidth, and photon correlation time, are deduced. Numerical data are given for specific quasi-phase-matched${\rm LiNbO}_{\bf 3}$waveguide CPTPG devices.

Parametric down-conversion in ppLN ridge waveguide: a quantum analysis for efficient twin photons generation at 1550 nm

Ramesh Kumar, Joyee Ghosh

Abstract We study modal characteristics of a customized ridge waveguide in lithium niobate designed to generate twin photons at telecom wavelength. A quantum analysis of SPDC predicts the possible down conversion processes and optimizes the input beam parameters for fundamental mode emission. Further, a joint spectral amplitude analysis ensures that the parameters are ambient for generating frequency-correlated photons throughout the phase-matching spectrum. Moreover, negatively correlated degenerate signal/idler photon pairs in the fundamental mode emission occurs at 1550 nm. A key result of our paper is an explicit expression and plot for comparing the generated signal power in case of waveguides as compared to bulk crystals. Our calculations clearly show a dependence of ℒ 3/2 for a waveguide of length ℒ , compared to a linear dependence in case of a bulk crystal.

Generation of quantum‐entangled twin photons by waveguide nonlinear‐optic devices

Toshiaki Suhara

Abstract This paper reviews the quasi‐phase‐matched (QPM) waveguide nonlinear‐optic device technologies for generation of quantum‐entangled twin photons indispensable for quantum‐information techniques. After a brief introduction to the concept of entanglement, quantum theory analysis of twin‐photon generation (TPG) is outlined to clarify the properties of twin photons. Then, methods for entangled‐photon generation are discussed. Practical design and theoretical performances of LiNbO3 waveguide QPM TPG devices, as well as the fabrication techniques, are described. Finally, experimental demonstrations of polarization‐entangled twin‐photon generation by waveguide Type‐I and Type‐II QPM TPG devices are presented.

Counterpropagating entangled photons in a periodically poled nonlinear waveguide

Mark C. Booth, Mete Atatüre, Giovanni Di Giuseppe +3 more

Entangled photons, which may be generated through the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a crystal with /spl chi//sup (2)/ nonlinearity, have long been in the spotlight for quantum-optics experiments. The generation of entangled photons by quasi-phase matching (QPM) in lithium niobate offers the promise of increased photon-pair production and, with the integration of a waveguide structure, control of the spatial characteristics of the down-converted photons. It turns out that the use of a waveguide structure, in conjunction with periodic poling to achieve quasi-phase matching, offers another critically important feature: the possibility of generating counterpropagating signal and idler photons. We consider the conditions required for generating counterpropagating photon beams and explore some of the unique properties of this source of light using a periodically poled LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide.

Design of an integrated optical source of twin photons

Ivan A. Avrutsky, Alexander V. Sergienko

The phase matching for the nonlinear process of frequency-degenerated spontaneous parametric downconversion in tunneling-coupled channel waveguides is analyzed. The use of type II nonlinear interaction with individual photons in each pair appearing in different output channels allows for constructing polarization entangled states for quantum information processing applications.
